Caine1 vs. Morghoul2 – Local summer tournament – Round 3

Hello everyone!

In the third final round of our local tournament I was going to face Skorn lead by Lukasz. He brought a heavy caliber lists – Morghoul2 and Morghoul1. Because of all present Blind, I knew that melee infantry-based list wasn’t the best option here. However, I was aware that Caine1 list would most likely have problems with removing Animatrax. Nevertheless, I decided to pick him, play wide and hope for the best 😛 However, I though that the scenario was going to be the biggest issue, as Stormwall cannot be everywhere and gun mages aren’t the models than can hold the zone.

Łukasz’s Morghoul2 list:

Skorne
[Theme] Winds of Death

[Morghoul 2] Lord Assassin Morghoul [+29]
– Archidon [10]
– Basilisk Krea [7]
– Cyclops Raider [9]
– Cyclops Shaman [8]
Extoller Soulward [0(3)]
Extoller Soulward [0(3)]
Immortal Vessel [3]
Void Archon [8]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5]
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew [2]
Siege Animantarax [17]

My Caine1 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Sons of the Tempest

[Caine 1] Lieutenant Allister Caine [+30]
– Stormwall [36]
– Squire [0(5)]
Black 13th Strike Force [10]
– Morrowan Battle Priest (3) [6]
Tempest Blazers (max) [18]

We played Invasion.

Deployment

Sadly, I lost the roll and Łukasz decided to go first. He put his battle engine on the left, minions on the right and his battle group in the middle.

I decided to put Stormwall a little bit closer to the right edge, as deploying him on the left side would effectively put him out of the game. I put my cavalry on the left flank, more to contest the zone than to deal serious damage to Animatrax. Black13 took position on the right side.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Skorn army ran forward, the important models took cover behind the theme force wall. Minions took the right flank, Animatrax took the left.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

After carefuly measuring the distance between Stormwall and Krea I decided to put Snipe on my colossal and go for some lucky rolls. Stormwall marched forward, hit his both shots lol and left Krea on handfull of boxes, it was very close somehow. Blazers ran to the left side with Blur adding +3 DEF. Black13th walked forward and stayed outside of threat ranges. Caine had to keep his distance from Morghoul in order not to get blinded instantly. However, I should have moved him closer to the objective to give him Eyeless sight turn after turn. This oversight turned out to be quite painful in the following turns.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Krea had to withdrew away from any of my threat ranges as losing the crucial beast in the early stages might be a game changer. Gobbers on the right put a huge smoke cloud. Archidon took shelter in the cloud, Void Archon kept away from any threat ranges and stayed 3″ deep in the forest. Animatrax somehow managed to hit my Blazers twice and killed one shiled guard and one horseman, ouch! Apparently DEF 17 is not enough for this monster. Shaman spread Krea’s aura on BE, Morghoul did the same in the center.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

This turn I could go for 2 points play in the middle. Krea was way too far to threaten her in any way. Animatrax’s ARM was simply to high to harm him without commiting my colossal in melee. I decided to go for the objective and I killed it with Stormwall and B13. I contested the left zone with a single Blazer and the other zone with… a Stormpod. I scored 2 points, 2:0. Sadly, I forgot to take a photo this turn.

Round 3 Turn 1

Both circular zones were barely contested, so it was pretty straightforward what was going to happen. Łukasz cleared both zones efortlessly and prepared his army for the next turn. Morghoul boldly moved forward, as three Blazers weren’t enough to seriously threaten him. Void Archon got rid of the Stormpod, gobbers smoked again. Łukasz scored 2 points in both circular zones and dealt considerable damage to my objective, 2:2.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I knew the time was running out. I had to start working on the damage dealers. Animatrax was still out of range, and I was sure that the engagement will be on Łukasz’s terms. The only way I could get the BE was to retaliate hard in melee but in order to do that I had to survive the engagement in the first place. Archon was still out of range, Archidon was within though. I went for the stormyboy. Heavy cannons barrage coupled with quite powerful B13s shots finished his life. I decided to leave the middle zone uncontested (well, contested by a heavily damaged objective), because leaving Stormwall there would mean a dead colossal the next turn 😛 and honestly, anything put there would die. A single Blazer contested the leftmost zone. I was thinking about running the whole squad there, as that would guarantee me another point (Animatrax didn’t contest the zone, Morghoul scored a point there, he is behind the building), but I’d rather save them for later. Killing Animatrax would end this game, not scenario (at least from my point of view). Nobody scored a point, 2:2.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

As it was easy to predict, both the objective and the single Blazer go down. Shaman killed the other one, leaving the last Blazer alive. Łukasz scored 3 more points, 5:2.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

In order to stay in the game I had to put Stormwall in, at least hehe, two zones. My plan was to get Void Archon, as that was the only way I could survive an inevitable BE’s charge. Sadly, that sneaky archon survived on 1hp, and even Caine1 himself couldn’t deal the finishing blow. That sealed my fate, what a pitty. Killing him would enhance Stormwall’s chances of surviving the next round. On the other side, I was running out of time and winning in this situation would be tough for sure.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

Łukasz put Void Archon and Animatrax into action and killed my colossal. That basically finished the game and we shook hands.

Afterthoughts

Ayyy what a game, thanks Łukasz for an intense final. I was very lucky with Krea at the very begining, however killing her with two shots only would be highly unlikely. Not killing the Void Archon was the real bummer here as well as not giving Caine Eyeless sight in the second round. Because of that I had to keep him very far away and play very conservatively to prevent him from getting blinded and killed as a consequence. I knew that the key to victory was killing the nasty battle engine, but because of the terrain and it’s placement I had to start with the other pieces first. I killed Archidon and was very close to killing Void Archon, who knows how it might have looked like in that case.

Nevertheless, it was an interesting game for sure! I was so happy to finally play some games of Warmachine, first time after 5 months!

Cheers,
Piotr
