Constance1 vs. Asphyxious3 – Polish Team Championship – Round 4

Hello everyone!

As some of the fellow players have come up with the issue of self-isolation – this tournament took place several weeks ago ; ) it will take some time until we all get back to playing WMH on a board, not the virtual one.

In the fourth round of the event, and the first round of TOP8 part, we faced a team from Rzeszow composed of CoC, Grymkin and Cryx. As a result of the pairing process I got a favourable match up (in my opinion) – Cryx. I was very curious how would Constance perform against Stalker or Slayer spam.

Krzysztof (obviously not the same, as the previous round 😉 ) decided to take Asphyxious3.

Krzysztof’s Asphyxious3 list:

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go second. I had a plan to drag Slayers close to me, put some PKs in front and allow my friend to charge them, and then with a swift striker remove most of them.

Krzysztof deployed his army pretty symmetrically, all the Slayers in a line of 7th inch.

I deployed Blockader slightly closer to the right side, where forest and objective wouldn’t limit his maneuverability. Thamarite Archon was deployed on the left, Morrowan Archons in the middle and on the right. PKs on both sides of my colossal.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Gaspy cast Mobility and everything ran very far forward. His heavy warjacks were already in the middle of the board.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

I decided to put my plan into life. I moved some of the Precursors forward and kept most of them outside of Slayers’ charge range. The point was to move enough PKs up the board to force Cryx to engage. I positioned Morrowan Archons, as far forward, as I could, so maybe at least few of the PKs in front of them would survive. Gabriel also gave tough to the leftmost unit. Alexia1 created a Thrall that charged one of the Slayers.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Krzysztof had to engage this turn and managed to kill a considerable number of my knights. Also, a unit of Mechanic Thralls ambushed me from the right. Fortunately, I remembered about them and positioned my flanks well. There were 3 Slayers sitting in my rectangular zone. Krzysztof also positioned his Carrion Thralls between his Slayers to limit my charge lanes.

Round 2 Turn 2

I had so many models within my charge range, but I had to pick targets carefuly and activate my models in the right order. I couldn’t kill all the models within my grasp, or could I? At least I tried 😉 It was crucial to use Blockader to the best effect, but keep him safe from harm in the same time. Fortunately, Constance’s feat and all the melee bonuses I had were enough to get rid of 5 out of 7 Slayers. There are few important things to keep in mind in this kind of situation, where the whole enemy army is within your reach and you can virtually do whatever you want. I will mention those things at the end of the report. I killed all the models in my zone, contested all the flags. We both scored 1 point, 1:1. I was pretty satisfied with the result, but I knew that the game wasn’t over.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Krzysztof was already really far up the table and he was about to push me away from the flags even farther. Fortunately, his two last heavy hitters were occupied with the infantry in front of them and couldn’t get to Blockader (and honestly Precursors were the bigger threat at that moment). Krzysztof managed to get rid of both Morrowan Archons. He managed to clear two flags, but the middle one remained contested and I still had a handful of knights waiting in the second line to strike back. Krzysztof scored 3 points, but not knowing why we marked only 2… I don’t believe that rightmost flag was contested. I will stick to points as written, as it didn’t have an impact on the game (otherwise I will get lost 😛 ), 1:3.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I had to put pressure on scenario, otherwise I would lose here. I had to prioritize getting points and contesting meaningfully. I had to kill both Slayers as well. Fortunately, Ragman & Blockader with Fortune is able meet the challenge. I scored a point in my rectangular zone and block the opposite one with a Thrall who charged the objective. I couldn’t score any point on the flags, though. I managed to get rid of most of the enemy army with an exception of few models running around. What’s also important, I moved Constance to the right, where I expected to start scoring points in a turn or two. This time I scored only one point, 2:3. It still wasn’t finished, though.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Krzysztof managed to clear the rightmost flag and kill all the precursor knights in the middle, ouch. Gabriel died as a hero, protecting my zone from being contested. Alexia and Ragman died to a Pistol Wraith. Cryx scored 2 more points, and I scored one, 5:3.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

Constance ran to the rightmost flag and stayed safe behind the forest. Blockader stayed in the zone and killed all the models that potentially could contest my zone, including a Pistol Wraith. A single Precursor Knight contested the rightmost flag. Thamarite Archon scored the middle flag. A single Precursor Knight contested the rectangular zone and I scored 3 points, 6:5.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

With only Asphyxious and a single Necrotech alive (well, undead, but you know what I ment) there wasn’t too much Krzysztof could do. Constance was out of Gaspy’s reach, so he scored only one point, and I scored 3, 9:6.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

I contested the rectangular zone and scored 3 more points and we shook hands, 12:6. Thank you Krzysztof for the game!

Round 5 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

It might look that I had the advantage since the second round, but there were many things I could mess up that would lead to my defeat.

It’s essential not to forget about the scenario in all that mess. It’s easy to focus on attrition instead of the scenario.
Keeping your caster safe is critical. I won and lost games too many times by forgetting to protect my commander, or by killing the opposite one, because somebody focused on attrition a bit too much and put his caster at risk.
Last but not least, keep track of time passing by. Do not lose time on planning a perfect turn. It is much better to have a good turn and have time to play several more, rather than executing a perfect turn that is going to be your last one.

Time for relax after the first day of the event

All in all, my team won and we managed to get to the semi-finals!

Cheers,
Piotr
