Constance1 vs. Bartolo1 – Polish Team Championship – Round 2

Hello everyone!

In the second round we faced another team from southern Poland. What was quite funny, as they also had among them a player who was getting back to the game after a long break, who was also one of the top Polish players back in the day.

After taking a closer look on the match ups I knew I wasn’t going to have an easy game there. As a result of pairing process, I was going to play against Mercenaries led by Marcin.

Marcin took Bartolo and Magnus2 to the event, but I was pretty sure he will play Bartolo. I wasn’t too sure what to take, but I was afraid that Siege1 won’t chew through high armor of 2 colossals. I decided to take Constance.

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go first. There was an impassable terrain in the middle and a wall on the left flank and I wanted to use those features to my advantage. I deployed Blockader closer to the right flank, Precursors and Morrowan Archons on the sides, Alexia1, Constance and solos in the middle.

Marcin deployed one of his colossals in the middle, the other was deployed closer to the left flank. The rest of the models were deployed all around.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

All of my models ran forward and stayed outside of enemy colossals’ spray ranges. On the left flank I had to avoid templates placed there thanks to his theme force.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Marcin carefuly measured my threat ranges and ran as far as he could to avoid getting charged. Bartolo cast Batten down the Hatches and Hot-Shot on one of the Blockaders.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

This turn I had a tough nut to crack. I knew that next round will most probably be Bartolo’s feat turn. I wanted to disturb Marcin’s plans and cause problems he would need to find a solution for. In the same time I had to keep my important pieces considerably safe. I decided to put a Morrowan Archon up front to jam one of his Blockaders. One Thrall ran forward too. I also put some Precursors in front of Marcin’s army. Sadly, I didn’t put enough models in the leftmost zone.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Marcin noticed the opportunity to score easy points on the left flank. One Blockader and ambushed Press Gangers were more than enough to deal with the models I had there. Fortunately, Morrowan Archon survived long enough to consume a lot of time and resources, but finally was removed. Bartolo moved up and used his feat. Another Pres Ganger unit charged in on the right side. Some of the models stayed way behind to contest the zone. Marcin scored one point, 0:1.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Since Bartolo used his feat, I couldn’t simply charge in. I had to keep my models out of 12 inches from Bartolo, and apart from that, I had to keep my important pieces out of Blockaders’ spray ranges. I decided to go for a point on the right flank and capture my flag. I had to contest the leftmost zone too. Fortunately, I managed to kill all the Press Gangers in the right zone. Thamarite Archon flew over the rock in the middle, but failed to kill any important model. My Blockader sprayed few times. Sadly, attrition-wise, the game was going downhill for me. I scored two points, 2:1.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Yet again Marcin managed to clear the leftmost zone easily. A Blockader killed my objective. I didn’t really contest the enemy flag, so Marcin scored another point there, too. My colossal was jammed by two light warjacks. I was running low on models.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

There was no way I could unjam my Blockader before activating it. Alexia1 joined the party and I managed to kill both light jacks and clear the zone. One Knight contested the leftmost circular zone. Sadly, both flags were contested by Blockaders. I scored one point, 3:4.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

Marcin decided to play it safe and started mopping up my army step by step, while not giving away too much. Marcin scored another 3 points and contested my zone, 3:7.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

I knew the end was coming, but I wanted to score some scenario points. I cleared my circular zone and the flag, but my solos were too far to score it. I contested the other flag, but I couldn’t contest the circular zone, 4:8.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

Marcin easily scored 3 more points and we shook hands.

Round 5 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

I wasn’t satisfied with how I used my Blockader. I could have moved in (while staying out of threat range of the other colossal) to provoke Marcin to charge in with one of his colossals. He wouldn’t be able to one round mine and I would be able to retaliate with what was behind my Blockader.

Also, I believe that the way I moved my Morrowan Archon was the right choice, but there was nothing to support him with in the following turn. All that was for nothing. I should have also focused more on one of the flanks, rather than going symmetrically like I did here.

All in all, I believe that Bartolo with double colossals is a terrible match up for melee infantry based army. Perhaps Siege would have been a better choice.

Sadly, in the great match of two returning great players – our man lost, what meant that we lost. Fortunately, though, there was nothing to be worried about, as we had one last round in the pre-cut and 2 wins out of 3 rounds would guarantee us getting qualified for the top8 cut. However we had to win the next round.

Cheers,
Piotr
