Constance1 vs. Zaal2 – Oslo Masters – Round 4

Hello everyone!

In the fourth round of the Oslo Masters tournament, with 2 games won and 1 defeat, I was to play against one of the coolest UK players there is – Jake. We met back in 2017 on my first WTC in Belgium when he was still a Cygnar player mastering Haley3. Later, he moved to Skorne and stayed there ever since.

Heyo Jake!

He brought Zaal2 and Xerxis2 to the event (I’m not sure if he even fielded the other list 😛 ). So let’s get to the lists!

We played Bunkers.

Deployment

I won the roll and immediately decided to go second, as Zaal2 doesn’t want to go first, usually… ;p

Jake was deploying first and put both his statues on the left. Cyclop Shaman was deployed on the left too, probably in order to kill contesting models from behind the huge rock. Both Immortal units, together with Zaal2, Krea, Hakaar and some Ancestral Guardians were deployed in the middle and on the right side of the table.

I decided Blockader will go in the middle, slightly to the right. I put the biggest unit of PK on the left, the other on the right. Morrowan Archons were deployed on the flanks and Thamarite Archon on the left, aiming to go for the souls ; ) Constance, Alexia1 and Gabriel were deployed in the middle.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Nothing surprising there, all the statues, regardless of its’ size, ran forward.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Constance cast fortune on Blockader and moved forward. All the other models ran forward, spreading a little bit more on the left flank, as I was afraid of the SG’s AOE. Alexia created a Thrall that ran to the right side.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Jake didn’t even think of triggering Vengeance on my units. His Immortals spread across the table creating several layers of rock-hard models. One nasty statue contested the flag behind the rock and made me think weather I want to trigger Vengeance on the unit, in case I would like to score a point there.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

The forest placement was quite unfortunate, as I simply couldn’t threaten with Blockader’s sprays at all, at least I couldn’t threaten the tasty bits, like Hakaar. I wanted to kill as many Immortals, as possible, while not committing too many models too. I managed to get 5 Immortals on the left. Also, Thamarite Archon removed Abudibudan from the game ; ) On the right flank I wanted to kill the Immortal to score a point, but the Thrall missed. Without Vengeance there I could walk up with PK’s and used Shield Wall order. What I should have done though, was charging the stoney dude with a PK, while withdrawing the others in the same time. Most of them would be outside of Immortals threat range and I would score a point. There was no solo that could score a point for Jake there, so I think it would be a better way to handle that flank. I managed to contest Skorne’s rectangular zone at least and I scored 1 point, 1:0.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

That was going to be Zaal’s feat turn for sure. Immortals charged in killing handful of the knights. Sadly, one of them managed to toe into my zone. On the other side, my Shield Walled unit managed to survive quite a lot surprisingly, so that was ok. Also, Blockader survived Hakaar’s charge. I collected plenty of souls on Constance and souls on Alexia (for that purpose I was using cool Qualigeeks magnetized counters I got on BoostedCon last year. With that many souls/corpses it’s quite practical I must admit). Both Supreme Gentlemen advanced and set on fire a couple of my models.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Alexia collected 6 corpses, Constance collected 8 souls! I saw a good opportunity to go for the right flag. I started with Constance using her feat. Blockader walked up and killed several Immortals to clear the path for my Precursors. Thamarite Archon managed to kill Hakaar (I messed up with the order of activation and loaded Hakaar with some souls, what rised his armor value, but at least I got a boosted dmg roll). Precursors on the right charged in and managed to kill handful of Immortals. Both of my Morrowan Angels charged in and killed some Immortals, but sadly I failed to clear the rightmost flag. In the middle, PKs charged in together with Gabriel. Risen tried to get to the Rectangular zone, but I couldn’t body-block all of the Defensive Strikers so there was no Risen contesting the zone in the end, what was really bad. Instead, I should have created a Risen close to the forest, walk up and create a Thrall there, who would easily be able to toe into the zone. We both scored a point, 2:3.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Sadly, Jake managed to find an angle, cleared the path and charged Blockader with his Ancestral Guardian and maybe one or two Immortals and that was enough to finish him. Also, one of the statues got dangerously close to my lines. My right flank was doing relatively well, but apart from that this didn’t look good at all, Jake scored two more points, 2:5.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

I was running low on clock. I finally managed to clear the rightmost flag and score it with a Thrall. Alexia created another Thrall who, together with my Archon, managed to put the objective down. Obviously, at this stage of the game with such huge losses I couldn’t even think of killing the Supreme Guardians. Constance moved away from enemy models. We miscalculated the points, as I should score 3 instead of only 2 points marked, so the result at this point is 5:5.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

I contested the middle flag with 1 model only, so Jake didn’t have any issues with removing the knight. A couple of Immortals managed to kill my objective. Fortunately, my Archon survived and contested the rectangular zone. Also, Jake contested my flag with one of the last models there, 5:7 in Skorne’s favor.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

Well, with 12 seconds on my clock I couldn’t do much honestly, not at this point hehe I killed the one contesting model and flew Archon around the rock to contest the flag from there. A Risen contested the middle flag, I scored 1 point, 6:7.

Round 5 Turn 2

Round 6 Turn 1

Jake killed the objective and all the models apart from my caster, what made him score 1 point there. He also cleared the middle flag and scored another point, to 6:9.

Round 6 Turn 1

Round 6 Turn 2

With dice in my hand I killed one contesting Immortal with a Vengeance move, moved Risen to contest my rectangular zone and flipped the clock, scoring one point on the flag, Jake scored one on the middle flag, 7:10.

Round 6 Turn 2

Round 7 Turn 1

Jake finished the game by killing my Archon and the one contesting Risen and scored 3 more points, 7:13.

Round 7 Turn 1

Afterthoughts

After losing Blockader in the 4th round the game went really downhill for me. Apart from poor clock management, I should have focused better on the right flank, sending a colossal there maybe? Playing Blockader on the flank this time could have been the right call. I noticed that I tend to block and jam myself a lot, I definitely need more experience with playing an infantry-based list with a colossal.

The forest helped Jake a lot, as he was able to hide the juicy stuff behind it, preventing me from retaliating harder and collapsing on the right flank this way. Setting Immortals on fire, for example, would be great during Zaal’s feat turn.

All in all, I finally got to play versus Exalted theme force, and I believe it surely could have been played better. Next time, I would like to test Stryker2 vs Exalted (spoiler: it felt much better) to see how it would perform.

Thanks, Jake, for a great game! And congratulations on winning CaptainCon this weekend!

Cheers,
Piotr
