Game #10 Thagrosh2 vs. Thexus1 – Tsunami of models, again.

Hello everybody!

The third round of our local Tournament arrived. This time I was paired against Mateusz Dziewanowski who was the initiator of that blog. He was the main organizer of the whole event and he was supposed to play only in case there would be uneven number of players, and since we were 21 Mateusz decided to step in. He brought only one list, one terribly overwhelming list. Thexus and sth like million of drudges. After the success in the previous game I was to face even more models, and in this case they had tough, higher ARM and tough… and tough it was going to be indeed.

We were to play Recon II, and I decided I will go with Thagrosh2, as I already have some experience with him and I didn’t believe that Mateusz will make a mistake that would allow me to kill his caster.

We rolled the starting roll… and unfortunately I rolled 1. I strongly believe that it was the most important roll of the whole game. That noumerous army with that long threat ranges with a control caster… this couldn’t end well. I had to find a solution within my resources. I saw a couple of options,  only to mention Tyhpon, overtaking Angelii and 6 sprays. There still was hope… but dealing with roughly counting over 60 models definitely won’t be easy.

Deployment

Mateusz deployed his zombie herd. Thexus in between of two Wreckers. I deployed symmetrically as I couldn’t forefit scenario game that easily. The beer glasses had a special rule: d3 sips per turn, but in consequence they applied a continuous effect: thirst.

Deployment

Round 1

Mateusz, after counting my threat ranges, run forward with all he had, casting deceleration.

In my turn I had to calculate his threat ranges. Unfortunately, his threat ranges could be so nonlinear, including feat, Telekinesis, Rampager (sic!) etc. that it was problematic. I did what I could to save Typhon. I couldn’t do much about losing one Angelius, as with TK’ed arc node Mateush threatened 22″. In retrospective I think I should have pushed everything forward (just making sure not to lose Typhon), as I was to lose one beast nevertheless.

Round 1

Round 2

Mateusz indeed went for one of the Angelii, for the right one, as Typhon was closer to the left flank and couldn’t engage on the right flank, my mistake. All drudges spread across the table.

In my turn I didn’t have a lot of models that I could kill and still Thexus’s feat wasn’t used. I decided to kill the Wrecker with Neraph and Protector, keep Typhon safe, and run with Angelius toward the middle part, behind the forest. The game was definitely going Mateusz’s way, I scored 1 point though.

Round 2

Round 3

Mateusz continued his offensive. Ambushed unit swarmed my right flank. He got rid of Neraph too, cast Deceleration and stayed safe behind the wrecker. Drudges continued to push forward. Mateusz scored 2 points and cotested my flag, 2:1 in his favour.

In my turn I decided to take control of the right zone and contest the left zone. Forsaken couldn’t kill more than 2 models with his explosion due to deceleration. I feated and tried to clear as many models as I could, at the same time trying to keep my beasts considerably safe. Taking Thexus’s feat into account, it was very dificult. Angelius went on a killing streak and killed handful of models in the left zone and successfully contested the flag. I couldn’t manage to push models away and kill the MachineWraith, what ment I couldn’t score there. I scored only point. It was 2:2. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo, but believe me, it didn’t look good.

Round 4

Mateusz managed to contest my flag with Machinewraith and swarmed the right zone. He easily killed the Angelius and controlled the flag. He efortlessly cleared the left zone, scoring 2 points and got it to 4:2.

In my turn I failed misserably to kill Machinewraith sitting on my flag. Thagrosh charged in fearlessly and removed from play couple of drudges. Typhon and frienzing Seraph couldn’t clear the zone and there was last drudge sitting there. I only managed to contest the zone with a single Ice Witch. 5:2 in favour of Mateusz.

Round 4

Round 5

In this round Mateusz had to kill the contesting Ice Witch in order to win. 7:2 for Mercenaries.

Afterthoughts

Wow, the amount of models with tough is so overwhelming. In the retrospection I see though, that I could have score more points and even the fight. Failing to clear the flag and the right zone was really sad, as was losing Angelius in round 2. All in all this match up is certainly problematic, to put it in a nice way. The game itself, as always with Mateusz, was a great fun!

Thanks to my opponents from previous rounds I managed to finish the whole event on the 4th place with the highest SoS in the tournament. Being 4th out of 22 players means a lot to me. It’s a pitty that we haven’t managed to play the 4th round, but to be fair we had enough that day 😛

As for my list, the only one I played throughout the tournament, Thagrosh2 is really aggresive. In case somebody play a safe 1st round, the list can take lead really quick. Round 2 “move, shoot, feat, move back” can really have a big impact on somebody’s plan, as it took place in the 1st Round against Old Witch3, or here during the preparation game, against Thyra1. Even being swarmed doesn’t change that much as I have managed to clear the table in 2nd Round, against Skarre3. Although in 3rd Round, the amount of models with tough has succesfully stopped me from getting any scenario points. I believe that next time I would play this match up better… at least I hope 😛 I think that the only change I could implement, would be changing Protector for something else. This would require more testing.

I will be now preparing for the upcoming Champions event in Poznań, 17-18 November. Hellmouths and other substancial models have arrived, so this time, I’m afraid, you might be seeing some Anamag action.

Cheers!

Piotr
