Game #11 Anamag vs. Morvahna1 – Harvesting Ogruns.

The sad day has arrived. I have begun playtesting Anamag.

After a quite long break from playing this ugly model I have decided to finally put her on the table. The Champions event is getting closer and closer and I need some practice with her, as I can’t imagine a Champions pair without that powerful, but yet obnoxious tier list.

Regretably, I still do not own Chosen, however Hellmouths and Golab have finally arrived! I have couple of ideas how to build Anamag list, but since I am still missing a core piece of her list I have to build it in a particular, pre-Chosen way. I need to keep in mind that I should expect a lot of Orboros and Retribution and other Anamags of course. I believe that Warspears are too expensive though, and for their cost I may find something I will get better use of (Chosen in the future for sure). However, I don’t want to give up testing them at all and I will probably test them next game. This time I decided on Golab, min unit of birds and 3 units of Warmongers.

My Anamag list:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Primal Terrors

[Anamag 1] Anamag the Doom Feaster [+27]
– Blightbringer [32]
– Golab [17]
– Ammok the Truthbearer [4]
Spell Martyr [1]
Spell Martyr [1]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (min) [8]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
– Gorag Rotteneye [6]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
Blighted Rotwings (min) [7]
Hellmouth [0(6)]
Hellmouth [0(6)]

I was about to face Karol. After the Orboros CID changes dropped he decided to give Tharns a try. He came up with an idea of multitask Morvahna1 force.

Karol’s Morvahna1 list:

Circle Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] The Devourer’s Host

[Morvahna 1] Morvahna the Autumnblade [+28]
– Brennos the Elderhorn [15]
– Gnarlhorn Satyr [12]
Tharn Ravager White Mane [0(5)]
Death Wolves [9]
Tharn Blood Pack (max) [15]
Tharn Bloodtrackers (min) [9]
– Nuala the Huntress [4]
Tharn Bloodweavers [8]
Tharn Ravagers (max) [15]
– Tharn Ravager Chieftain [0(5)]
Tharn Ravagers (max) [15]
– Tharn Ravager Chieftain [0(5)]

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go first. Karol chose the other side of the board, because he knew how many positioning problems will that middle wall cause to my army. I knew that putting Blightbringer on the right flank will definately cause me issues, but I preferred him on the right flank. On the left I planned to put birds that would be able to fly far enough to contest Karol’s flag. I put Golab on the left flank too. I placed max Warmongers with Gorag on the distant right flank, the other max unit on the opposite side of the board. The minimum unit took the middle. Anamag aimed for the sweet spot behind the wall. Later on I placed Hellmouth in both rectangular zones. I must admit that I am still learning how to properly position Maws and I am still looking for the best method.

Karol spread his forces evenly. Big tharn units were placed on the flanks. Bloodpack took the middle. Both beasts were placed around the shooting unit. Morvahna stood in the middle. Death Wolves were placed on the distant left flank. Bloodwitches waited for the right moment in the Ambush. Bloodtrackers took the left side of the pond.

Deployment

Round 1

In the first turn everything run forward. Not to far though, as I was aware of Bloodtrackers threat ranges. I made sure not to block myself the next turn. Bond of Gristle & Bone (what?) cast on Gorag’s unit.

Karol run forward too, trying to keep his forces, or at least the key elements, out of my threat ranges. He wanted me to come forward and to expose my army. Restoration cast on the left Tharns.

Round 1

Round 2

This turn I had to start killing models, at least try to. First, I tried to Hex Blast the spell from the left Tharn unit, but Karol was really kind and reminded me that Morvahna can still keep her upkeeps for d3 damage. I switched the target on Bloodtrackers and due to stealth I hoped for a good deviation roll. It never came… One tentacle charged Bloodtrackers in order to find a good landing spot for Blightbringers 5″ AOE. The colossal’s nuke made 4 trackers evaporate. Fortunately, I didn’t trigger Vengance on the left Tharn unit. On the right flank I prepared to receive the charge, and tried to block any charg lanes toward Blightbringer. I kept my forces tight, as I was afraid of ambushing unit. As I found out later on, this wasn’t the best move, since Karol was only waiting for that.

Karol decided that this will be his feat turn. Bloodwitches came out on the left flank. With Bloodpack’s shooting and the ambushing unit, Karol managed to anihilate one whole unit of Warmongers. Tentacles and Maw survived somehow. On the other side Karol kept his forces safe, probably a bit too safe. Fortunately, I brought enough 4″ AOEs, so we knew where the forests were. Brennos cast Ravagin Winds at my colossal, 4″ AOE where you cannot shoot, bassicaly forcing me to move 5″ away. Take a look on that pattern made with yellow AOEs. Almost looks like Circle’s emblem, doesn’t it? I assume there were no coincidences. I scored one point, on my flag, 1:0.

Round 2

Round 3

This turn I had one point guaranteed. That’s a good start. I knew, that killing Objective shouldn’t be an issue, since Golab was really close. Killing the other two Tharns wouldn’t be that difficult too, but I had find a way to keep that lead and not loose the whole army in retaliation. I tried to contest the left side, but I was sure that whatever I put there, will die. There was no point in defending it by all means, as long as I could contest it next turn. With a little help of my feat I killed what I had to kill, and Golab sprinted away. Unfortunately one of Warmongers in the middle failed misserably, as he had a great opportunity to kill 5 Tharns from Bloodpack unit. Somehow he managed to get stuck on the second model. I scored 3 points, 4:0 in my favour.

Karol had to find a way to meaningfully contest my right zone, but at this point I wasn’t sure he could do that, since the right flank seemed to be already taken. Karol cleared the left zone easily, and tried to stop me from contesting it. He reminded me that Whitemane has countercharge now and Satyr can still counterslam. Couple of Warmongers died on the right flank. Karol scored 2 points, in the same time I scored 1 on my flag, 5:2 in my favour.

Round 3

Round 4

This round I had to score 2 points more and prevent Karol from scoring. That ment I had to clear the right zone and contest the other zone and the left flag. I cleared the right zone with Vengence attacks followed by normal activation. Anamag cut one more head in order to make space for contesting Ammok. Golab flew in and engaged both White Mane and Gnarlhorn Satyr contesting the flag. I scored 2 more points and we shook hands.

Round 4

Afterthoughts

This game came to the conclusion really fast. Pushing hard and gaining a strong advantage on the right flank assured I would be able to score enough points. The terrain placement surprisingly helped me a lot. The middle house prevented Karol from relocating his forces to the right flank and kept my Blightbringer safe. Giving up the left flank and focusing on the right one effectively took Death Wolves and the left Tharn unit out of the equation and I believe that’s what sealed the fate of the game. All in all it was a nice game and we both learned a lot. I am quite satisfied with Golab. Plus, the way he presents himself on the table is not something I could easily go around.
Next time I will face Protectorate and I will give Warspears a try.

Cheers!
Piotr
