Game #12 Anamag vs. Durst1 – a hard nut to crack.

Hello everyone!

This time I have decided to test a different, from previous one, version of Primal Terrors, still without Chosen though. Instead of taking Golab I focused on Warmongers and Warspears. Unfortunately, I couldn’t test Warspears’s full potential properly, as I was about to face Protectorate jack spam.

My Anamag list:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Primal Terrors

[Anamag 1] Anamag the Doom Feaster [+27]
– Blightbringer [32]
– Harrier [3]
– Ammok the Truthbearer [4]
Gremlin Swarm [3]
Spell Martyr [1]
Spell Martyr [1]
Warmonger War Chief [5]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
– Gorag Rotteneye [0(6)]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
Blighted Ogrun Warspears (max) [15]
– Warspear Chieftain [5]
Blighted Rotwings (min) [7]
Hellmouth [0(6)]
Hellmouth [0(6)]

I played against Jakub and his Protectorate jack spam.

Jakub’s Durst list:

Protectorate Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] The Creator’s Might

[Durst 1] Anson Durst, Rock of the Faith [+28]
– Castigator [12]
– Crusader [10]
– Purifier [8]
– Purifier [8]
– Purifier [8]
– Purifier [8]
– Reckoner [16]
– Repenter [8]
– Hierophant [0(3)]
Exemplar Warder Elias Gade [0(5)]
Scrutator Potentate Severius [0(6)]
– Crusader [10]
Vassal Mechanik [1]
Vassal of Menoth [3]
Vassal of Menoth [3]
Choir of Menoth (min) [4]
Choir of Menoth (min) [4]

Unfortunately, Jakub doesn’t have required models for this list and there were quite a lot of proxies involved, in this case almost the entire list. But how would you test something without proxing? It’s better to know if the list you’re planning to buy is actually working on the table, not only in one’s mind.

I will try to explain what was proxied with what:
Purifiers were proxied with Bastions,
Castigator was proxied with Flamebringer,
Durst was replaced by Revenger,
One Crusader was proxied with Blood of Martyrs,
Ellias Gade proxied with Errant,
Severius0 with Tristan,
Vassals were proxied with various models that I lost count of 😛

And yes, I proxied 2 Warmongers with 2 blue proxy bases.

We played The Pit II.

Deployment

Jakub won the roll and decided to go first. I chose the side without a wall that would reduce Blightbringer’s already limited mobility.

Jakub deployed his forces towards the left side with 2 Purifiers on the very left.

I deployed Blightbringer with an intention to cover his left flank with the building. Warspears stayed in the middle, both Warmonger units on both flanks, the one with Gorag on the left. Anamag with Ammok somewhere in the middle. Birds surrounded Anamag. Harrier was deployed opposite to my colossal. I hid one of the Hellmouths behind the building, but as it turned out, it was deployed a bit too far.

Deployment

Round 1

Jakub run with most of his models, giving the warjacks immunity to non-magical range attacks. Enliven on front Purifier. Durst cast Bulwark, what ment that his Purifiers had DEF 17 against melee attacks. I was starting to feel anxious, despite I knew that hitting in Primal Terrors is not an issue.

I run up with Ogruns, some of them in threat range of Protectorate’s warjacks in order to bait and get vengence, Jakub didn’t fall for it. I wanted to drag with Tentacle the closest Purifier (the one with Enliven). We were discussing how doest it actually work, what’s the interaction between those two abilities. You may find the answer here. Apparently, after dealing damage, the warjack with Enliven can move, but would be dragged anyway, it still can be blocked by a model or obstacle though. In this game it was irrelevant, as I missed my attack anyway. I tried to get a good deviation roll with Blightbringer’s shot, but as you can see on the picture below, with no success.

Round 1

Round 2

Jakub took out the middle Hellmouth, as I said, because it was placed too far forward. Jakub moved forward, made sure all of his jacks are in B2B contact in order to receive +2 bonus. DEF 17 on light warjacks is huge, but with effective MAT 12 or more it is not that difficult to hit. Durst used his feat, that gave +4 ARM to his warjacks.

In my turn I had a hard nut to crack. I knew I could get rid of most of those warjacks, the issue was how and in what order. With Vengence move I positioned Ogruns. Anamag moved up, feated, cast Carnage and Fury’s Strength on two units. Blighbringer tried to get the deviation again, failing for the second time. He gave aura of +2 ARM and +2 STR at least. Warspears with prey left one of the Crusaders on couple of boxes (we realized he didn’t have +4 ARM next turn). Rotwings finished him easily. Tentacles dragged Castigator and along with other Tentacles, free Maw attacks and Maw’s basic attack, left it on couple of boxes. Right Warmongers finished Castigator and dealt damage to one of the Purifiers, crippling his arm and cortex I believe. Left Warmongers destroyed the objective and one Purifier. Goblin swarm moved to B2B contact with the other Purifier. Anamag, although without fury, was totally safe behind my army. 2:0 in my favour.

Round 2

Round 3

Jakub did his best to get rid of as many of Ogruns as possible, but with ARM 22 Warspears were almost unkillable at this point. Jakub decided to take over the lef flank. Ellias, MVP of this game for sure, charged a Warmonger, killed it and with Quick Work he killed Gremlin Swarm. Sevy0 run behind the building. Left purifier killed 2 Warmongers and Gorag. Charging Crusader killed only one Warmonger, as his charge lane was blocked by overtaking Purifier and only one was in his range. All the zones were contested.

In my turn I destroyed all light warjacks but one in the left zone. Protectorate’s forces were pushed away from right zone and apart from left zone the situation on the table was looking good. What’s quite funny, last Warmonger from Gorag’s unit failed to kill Elias after hitting him with a charge attack. Boooo… I scored another point, 3:0.

Round 3

After this round Jakub decided to call the game, as it was already quite late and he was sure there was no sense to continue from that point.

Afterthoughts

Jakub admitted that normally he wouldn’t field that list knowing that he will face Anamag. At the begining I was sceptical, but Ogruns proved me wrong. As it turned out, hitting is no issue in that theme and they hit hard indeed. I obviously need to improve Hellmouth’s placing. I hope that with more games to come I will know all stats and abilities better, as checking everything is really time consuming.

I’m still looking for the best way to build PT list and play Anamag. I might even try PT without Blightbringer, we will see. As long as I don’t have Chosen I will test different options without them, obviously. I’m quite satisfied with Rotwings, as minimal unit is a cheap element, that can contest easily due to flight ability and can finish models that Ogruns were unable to deal with.

On the side note, Jakub’s list is very interesting and I’m looking forward to see how will it develop. Thanks for the game!

Cheers!
Piotr

  1. Hi your list is very interesting
    I like it a lot
Love the way you do your battle reports as well

    1. Thanks Pete! That means a lot to me 😉
What’s Anamag list you tested most recently?

    2. Or what will be the list you will be testing on Sunday? Are you going for L2, Rhyas or classic Anamag in PT?
And I must admit I enjoyed Warspears 😉
