Game #15 Thagrosh2 vs. Brisbane2 – The Game of Throne

Hello everyone!

I had a possibility to test my improved (I hope it is an improvement) Thagrosh2 list. I included Throne in it in order to have better game against heavily shooting lists. This game was to be a perfect opportunity to test this theory.

I played against my friend, Mateusz Dziewanowski and his newly purchased Cygnar army. Once, he swore not to play this army as he considered it to be not menly enough… well, how things change, when new models appear 😉 To be honest, Trenchers are amazing and I love the theme itself, but I’m afraid that Cygnar has little to offer outside of this theme force right now. I hope I will get proved wrong, but there are too few Cygnar players left in our polish meta right now. I’m looking forward to see Cygnar CID that will fix what hurts this army most.

But let’s get back to the game!

Mateusz took Brisbane2 list:

Cygnar Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Gravediggers

[Brisbane 2] Colonel Markus “Siege” Brisbane [+28]
– Ironclad [12]
– Triumph [18]
Anastasia di Bray [3]
Captain Maxwell Finn [0(6)]
Patrol Dog [2]
Trench Buster [0(5)]
Trench Buster [0(5)]
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt [8]
– Captain Jonas Murdoch [4]
Trencher Commandos (min) [10]
– Trencher Commando Officer [4]
– Trencher Commando Scattergunner (3) [6]
Trencher Express Team [5]
Trencher Express Team [5]
Trencher Infantry (max) [16]
Trencher Blockhouse [10]

This list is very fast and advance deployment helps a lot. I was really curious how Bunker would work and how would it improve trenchers survivability, as it gives d3 additional models to a trencher unit, that have suffered casaulties.

I played Thagrosh2 list with Throne:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Oracles of Annihilation

[Thagrosh 2] Thagrosh, the Messiah [+25]
– Angelius [17]
– Angelius [17]
– Naga Nightlurker [8]
– Seraph [14]
– Typhon [20]
Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1]
Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion [0(6)]
Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion [0(6)]
The Forsaken [0(4)]
Ice Witches [7]
Throne of Everblight [16]

I was curious how Throne will perform, but at the same time I was afraid he won’t make it to perform well, apart from dying spectacularly.

We played the Invasion scenario.

Deployment

I deployed as always with Angelii on the flanks and the rest spread between them. I intended to hide Thagrosh2 and Typhon behind the forest and give it Pathfinder occasionally. I still have’t decided what will I do with Throne, as Mateusz’s threat ranges were superior to mine.

Mateusz deployed Bunker on the right flank. His non-advance-deployed models in the middle, trenchers on the right, commandos on the left.

Deployment (Throne is proxied by Stormstrider obviously)

Round 1

Mateusz run with all of his models as far as possible, casting upkeeps where needed, Ironclad got Hallowed Avenger.

I had a tough nut to crack as I was facing an overwhelming forces already on my half of the board. I didn’t want to get too intimidated by his shooting power. I casted Dragon’s Blood on Throne (ARM22 and 36 boxes is a thing) and run it as far as possible. It was supposed to draw fire from all of his models while the rest of the army would stay untouched. I didn’t want to put my support pieces at risk, so the rest of the army stayed relatively back. I used Wind Ravager on both of my Hellions in order to prevent assaults and some nasty granade shooting. I run Typhon far up behind the forest with an intention to move forward with Pathfinder from my objective. I was about to test Throne’s durability.

Round 1

Round 2

Mateusz was hesitating for a while and decided to go for the Throne. First, Triumph missed his maintenance shot and later Ayiana failed misserably and missed her kiss, lucky me. There was a lot of shooting and charging involved, but when dust settled my Throne had still 17 boxes left. How you might ask? Well, missing the kiss, 1 Triumph shot, one Trencher’s charge with fury might have made the difference. Nothing really important happened on the left flank. Now it was my turn to retaliate.

I was happy to have Throne alive and I wanted to test his full potential against those pesky gravediggers 😉 I cleared 5 trenchers in front of the battle engine with 2 sprays and charge the remaining trenchers in the right circular zone. At this point we missplayed it a bit, I thought BE can suffer Grievous wounds, but I evened it up thinking that Throne eats trenchers and prevents them from being tough. We rolled for the toughs and put 1 trencher back into the play. Ayiana was still dead though. That ment I had 1 spray less and the Snoop-dog survived. After the game we realized that those Trenchers had Fury, what ment -1DEF, but I hit all of them nevertheless. Thagrosh used feat, cast Manifest Destiny, Slip Stream Typhon and hid behind the forest. Typhon moved up, sprayed 3 times. Forsaken took all of his 5 fury. Left Angelius charged in, killing a lot of commandos thanks to Overtake. Hellion moved in and used Wind Ravager, so Mateusz wouldn’t be able to shoot at my fragile Angelius. Said Hellion was missed by the turret’s shot. Right Angelius charged the objective and moved to attack Ironclad, but I failed in crippling any of the systems. Naga run behind the Throne as I was expecting to lose him next round. To be fair I messed up with the rightmost Angelius, as I should have kill the objective, the turret, hit Ironclad once, use Angelius’s Animus and move back behind the house with my feat movement. That would save him for another round. Instead, I moved even deeper and hit Ironclad dealing couple of damage points. 1-0 for Legion.

Round 2

Round 3

Mateusz although astonished by what I managed to do, didn’t waste time and got to work. Ironclad thanks to Hallowed Avenger hit Angelius hard. Triumph added with his shot, crippling Ironclad’s hand though 😉 he is the man I’m telling you! Finally Mateusz managed to kill the Angelius and moved Ironclad to the circular zone to threaten my models there. Left Angelius died too, because the Commandos Officer passed his tough check and they prayed said beast.

In my turn I moved Typhon in and sprayed 3 times. Unfortunately, I didn’t use his animus, what costed me a lot. Naga charged in bravely and failed doing anything to the Buster. Last Hellion killed a Trencher who was the closest to the Bunker preventing from adding any models to that unit. No points for neither of us. 1-0 in my favour.

Round 3

Round 4

Mateusz easily cleared the right zone scoring a point there with the last Trencher alive. He dealt significant amount of damage to Typhon and killed one Ice Witch. A draw, 1-1.

I believe my turn was the time when we had to finish the game, as our host had to go out. We called it a draw, with a Cygnar advantage.

Round 4

Afterthoughts

That was a really intense game, but at this point I think only dice could have saved me. We simulated it later and it would end up with coupl of crucial rolls. We discussed what could we have done better, but only at home I realized what should have I done and I already described it in Round 2 (the Angelius feat movement). The other thing I could have done better was probably to focus more on the right side of the board, since Typhon was already safe behind the forest. Instead of charging in with the Angelius I could have saved him for later. Naga couldn’t shine in this Match Up, as casting Wraith Bane on Throne would have done it actually harder to hit enemy models (in case we wouldn’t forget about Fury hehe).

I’m really satisfied with the list change. Having Throne in the list feels good. Although Thagrosh2 doesn’t give a lot to Throne, Throne gives a lot to the list. The ARM bonus is great on this model and increases significantly his survivability. Before the tournament I had an opportunity to play another game with Thagrosh2 vs. Jaga-Jaga and another one, Anamag vs. Skarre1. I will describe them next week, as this weekend we are going to Poznań to roll dice, drink beer and have fun 😉

Keep your fingers crossed!
Cheers!
Piotr
