Game #17 Anamag vs. Skarre1

Hello everyone!

In my last preparation game before the Champions event I played against Maximus and his pretty, as for this army standards, Cryx. This game turned out to be a surprise to be honest. It was a great opportunity to play with my friend who I haven’t been playing with for long time. Maximus, by the way, is reorganizing our community and thanks to him and Mateusz we have Wednesday gaming evenings 😉

Maximus chose to play Skarre1 in this set up:

Cryx Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Dark Host

[Skarre 1] Pirate Queen Skarre [+28]
– Stalker [8]
– Stalker [8]
– Stalker [8]
– Stalker [8]
– Skarlock Thrall [0(4)]
Darragh Wrathe [9]
Bane Warriors (max) [16]
– Bane Warrior Officer & Standard [0(5)]
Bane Warriors (max) [16]
– Bane Warrior Officer & Standard [0(5)]
Wraith Engine [15]
Wraith Engine [15]

As you can see, his battle group had to be respected, especially under Skarre’s feat. Additionally, survivable battle engines combined with returning, hard hitting infantry would probably cause me a headache. I believe that’s what Anamag doesn’t like – recursion combined with hard hitting infantry models.

I chose to play one more game of Anamag:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Primal Terrors

[Anamag 1] Anamag the Doom Feaster [+27]
– Blightbringer [32]
– Harrier [3]
– Ammok the Truthbearer [4]
Spell Martyr [1]
Spell Martyr [1]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (min) [8]
– Gorag Rotteneye [0(6)]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
Blighted Ogrun Warspears (max) [15]
– Warspear Chieftain [5]
Blighted Rotwings (min) [7]
Hellmouth [0(6)]
Hellmouth [0(6)]

We played Stand Off. I won the roll and chose to go second.

Deployment

Maximus deployed his battle engines on both flanks, one unit of Thrall Warriors in between them and second one on the left. Battle group was deployed more or less symmetrically. Maximus apparently wanted to push for the left circular zone. Thanks to theme’s benefits Maximus had an opportunity to create a cloud wall on the right flank.

I deployed my Blightbringer first and then worked around it. Anamag was deployed in the middle, alongside with the birds. Gorag’s unit was placed shoulder to shoulder with Warspears. Other two units of Warmongers deployed on the right flank. Hellmouths guarded both zones. I preyed left Wraith Engine.

Deployment

Round 1

Cryx run forward as far as possible. Maximus kept his Stalkers fairly safe behind the tower, in cover.

I decided not to proc Vengence on the left side and just engage and block charge lanes with Tentacles. On the right side I wanted to deal damage with blast from Blightbringer, but I missed and the AoE landed on the tower. Basically slow armies running toward each other.

Round 1

Round 2

That was going to be Skarre’s feat turn. Plus +5 ARM is a significant defensive bonus. Maximus charged in with his battle engines killing right Hellmouth and creating 2 Machine Wraiths on both flanks. Thralls killed Tentacles and run forward. Stalkers killed whatever they had in their range. The most important move was placing Darragh with his aura behind the Wraith Engine in a relatively safe spot.

I had to respond with my feat, but still, killing both Wraith Engines would be difficult! I decided to focus on the left one, where I had Warspears. We forgot that the aura of +2 ARM from Cryx battle engines is only against range and magical attacks. It was almost 22:00 by then, please forgive us 😛 I couldn’t kill Thralls blocking my movement with Vengence and the situation was getting dangerous. Unfortunately, I only managed to dismount Darragh, I wasn’t able to kill him. I had to take the bet, and try to kill the engine, otherwise I would probably lose. Fortunately, Warspears supported with all my strength buffs I managed to finish him off (that was the moment when we realized the Wraith’s aura doesn’t work on melee). I managed to kill both Machine Wraiths and cleared my zone, contesting all the others at the same time. I gained some space on the left flank, Maximus had a whole unit of Thralls on the right flank waiting for another round. I scored one point, 1:0 in Legion’s favour.

Round 2

Round 3

In his turn, Maximus started gaining advantage. He was able to deal quite easily with my Ogruns, thanks to Vengence, Weapon Master and Dark Shroud. Stalkers got closer and I ended up in a situation where if I won’t be able to deal with them I would probably die in the following turn. Maximus cleared his rectangular zone and contested mine, 1:1.

Since it was already late (almost 22.30) and Maximus was running low on clock, we decided to play last turn. Basically, if I wouldn’t be able to deal with last remaining Wraith Engine and Stalkers I would probably die next round. In case I would succeed, Maximus would not have enough time to win on attrition/scenario anyway. With Blighbringer’s help I killed the Wraith Engine. With my Vengence attacks, followed by normal activation I killed all Stalkers that were able to get to Anamag and Maximus conceded.

Round 3

Afterthoughts

I didn’t expect Skarre1 list to survive that long. Maximus managed to attack me in waves and he never committed more forces than necessary. Till the last moment I was under pressure of losing on CK. I had the advantage of Berserk, but Maximus evened it up with good tough rolls. After this close game, Maximus changed the list a bit and added a heavy cavalry unit. That will allow this list to have better threat ranges and will enable to engage and trade better. What I could do better was to spread more in order not to get jammed with couple of Thralls.

It was an enjoyable game and we had fun despite the late hour. Unfortunately, there would be no Cryx player out of almost 30 signed in for the Champions event.

To be honest, I regret not playing more with Anamag before the event, as I felt I am still lacking the experience in playing Primal Terrors. I felt strong with my Thag2 list, but I couldn’t tell how many games will I be able to play with him. As a spoiler I can tell you… not too many.

Cheers!
Piotr
