Game #36 Kallus2 vs. Dreamer

Hello everyone!

I felt Kallus2 had huge potential and I wanted to test him further. I decided to field him against Grymkin, as playing Cygnar against this army was a real struggle (what’s not a struggle while playing Cygnar). I took the very same list as previously, still proxying Kallus2 with Thagrosh2. My friend Jack that wrote couple of reports on Moment of Clarity took his Grymkin army with couple of intriguing conversions.

Jack‘s Dreamer list:

Grymkin Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Dark Menagerie

[Dreamer 1] The Dreamer [+28]
– Cage Rager [14]
– Clockatrice [13]
– Clockatrice [13]
– Crabbit [0(-)]
– Crabbit [0(-)]
– Gorehound [6]
– Gorehound [6]
– Rattler [8]
– Skin & Moans [15]
– Skin & Moans [15]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Death Knell [13]

One S&M was proxied with a painted Khador heavy warjack, second Clockatrice was proxied with another jack painted black. The huge pumpkin was a Cage Rager.

My Kallus2 list:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Primal Terrors

[Kallus 2] Kallus, Devastation of Everblight [+28]
– Archangel [35]
– Golab [17]
– Ammok the Truthbearer [4]
Swamp Gobber Chef [1]
Blighted Ogrun Warmongers (max) [13]
– Gorag Rotteneye [6]
Blighted Rotwings (min) [7]
Chosen of Everblight (max) [20]
Hellmouth [0(6)]
Hellmouth [0(6)]

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go first. I deployed Archangel on the left, Kallus2 in the middle and Golab on the right. Warmongers took right side, where they could hide behind the wall and charge in with their minifeat. Chosen on the left.

Jack deployed his carriage in the middle, beasts evenly spread out and Dreamer closer to the right flank.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

I ran everything forward, as Grymkin forces couldn’t seriously threaten my models in the first round. This time I didn’t forget about putting Blazing Path on Kallus2. Warmongers ran toward the wall and Chosen in front of Archangel.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Jack couldn’t do much but slightly advance forward and try to stay outside of my long charge ranges. Dreamer cast Artifice of Deviation in the middle of right rectangular zone.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Sadly, I underestimated opponent’s threat ranges and allowed myself to reposition Archangel not far enough. I wanted to put a couple of models on fire for the following turn. Usually, Kallus doesn’t have enough fury to spare to cast Brand of Fire, so I found it a good idea to set on fire enemy beasts beforehand. I screened my colossal with Chosen, Rotwings and Tentacles. On the other flank Warmongers moved slightly forward, behind the wall. Golab remained vigilant in the middle of the board.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Well, Jack couldn’t let such an opportunity to remove Archangel to pass by. With help of his battle engine’s Entropic Force Cage Rager cleared path to Archangel. Skin&Moans loaded with corpses charged my dragon and simply removed it from the table. Oh… I just noticed that we forgot about flags?? I really don’t know how? Maybe because it was already quite late.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Well, after loosing Archangel my situation changed dramatically. I have decided to charge in with Golab, but I overestimated the amount of damage he can deal and I ended up killing only one Skin&Moans. There were still 3 heavy warbests on the left flank. On the right Warmongers tried to deal with Clockatrice, but they failed miserably. Chosen with Battle Lust tried to deal some damage but they didn’t get any job done. I should have tried to pull one of the bests, kill it closer to my side of the board and then sprint away with Golab. That might have bought me some time. Instead, I sacrificed him for one S&M. I could have also go for scenario, only if we didn’t forget about flags lol

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Jack’s retaliation was swift and painful. With a lot of time to spare he anihilated my left flank and killed considerable part of my forces on the right flank. One of Chosen turned into a sweet phantasm. S&M easily killed Golab and I basically had nothing left to fight with.

Round 4 Turn 1

The only thing I could do was just charge Clockatrice on the left flank and cast Brand of Fire on Dreamer, sadly I didn’t roll enough for damage and she survived the damage from being on fire next turn. We shook hands.

Round 4 Turn 1

Afterthoughts

The mistake of puting Archangel within S&M charge range was disastrous. Losing a colossal with supreme charge ranges this way is simply unacceptable. From then on it was very difficult to recover. I might have shifted toward the right flank and try to snipe for assassination run. At one point I could have trampled Golab toward Dreamer but we decided that that turn she remained incorporeal instead.

As for match up, I cannot trade in a comfortable way. Having my colossal and one heavy beast against 5 heavies is not a convenient situation. I need to wait for opportunities and take advantage whenever they happen, for example softening S&M with cavalry charge, then finishing it with Golab, sprinting away and then using Overrun to get back even farther. There are lot’s of tricks with Overrun that player playing this list have to be aware of. I am just becoming one of them ;P

Well, I’m pretty sure I will remember to respect S&M and never risk losing Archangel this way again. I thought he was well screened, but it turned out otherwise 😛 All in all, it was a fun game.

Cheers,
Piotr
