Game #8 Thagrosh2 vs. Old Witch3

Hello everybody!

This weekend I took part in a tournament in Pruszków (near Warsaw). The amount of players that came astonished us. There were 22 players, as 2 players had to drop right before the tournament. Unfortunately, we couldn’t fit 4 rounds in one day as we planned before, so after 3 rounds we had to call it a day. I am still truly amazed and excited that I could saw that many familiar faces this weekend and have a chat (accompanied by a cold, vitamin, golden beverage). What I enjoy even more is that there were couple of players that stopped playing in the early MK3, and are getting back after a long hiatus.

Let’s get to battle reports!

This time I took my previously battle hardened Thagrosh2 list. I was quite satisfied with how it performed and I was pretty sure I would play most of the games with this semi-warbeast warlock. I decided to take Lilo3 as I wanted to deter match ups I considered bad. We got to the hotel, where the tournament took place, early in the morning and without unnecessary delays we drew pairings.

In the first round I was to play against Mefju, a warmachine player that remembers when Hordes were yet to come out! He stopped playing in early MK3, now he is getting back with Grymkins! He had Old Witch and Dreamer. I knew I wanted to go with Thag2, Mefju decided to take Old Witch as he had never the opportunity to properly test her.

We played Incursion as the first scenario.

Mefju’s Old Witch3 list with plenty of nasty imps:

Grymkin Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Bump in the Night

[Old Witch 3] Zevanna Agha, the Fate Keeper [+27]

– Gorehound [6]
Glimmer Imp [0(4)]
Lord Longfellow [0(6)]
Hollowmen (max) [13]
– Hollow Holden [0(4)]
– Lantern Man [3]
Mad Caps [4]
Mad Caps [4]
Murder Crows [9]
Murder Crows [9]
Neigh Slayers (max) [12]
Neigh Slayers (max) [12]

My Thagrosh2 list:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Oracles of Annihilation

[Thagrosh 2] Thagrosh, the Messiah [+25]
– Angelius [17]
– Angelius [17]
– Nephilim Protector [10]
– Neraph [12]
– Seraph [14]
– Typhon [20]
Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion [0(6)]
Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion [0(6)]
Spell Martyr [1]
Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1]
Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1]
The Forsaken [0(4)]
Ice Witches [7]

We rolled the starting roll, I decided to start, Mefju took a side. And here we go.

I deployed my models quite symmetrically with Angelii and Hellions on the flanks, Thag2 next to Typhon in the middle and the rest of the models evenly spread out.

Mefju placed his Old Witch centrally, Hollow men on the right flank, mad caps on the left flank (one behind the hut), light cavalry on both flanks, beasts more or less centrally.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of our deployment.

Round 1

Aggravator on Thag2 and Dragon’s Blood on Typhon. Seraph Slip Streamed Typhon, Thagrosh Slip Streamed Neraph and charged Old Witch. Both Angelii flew far forward, outside of threat ranges. Neraph hid behind the cloud, same as Typhon. Hellions stayed far from danger.

Mefju cast admonition (edit: reconstruct) on Cage Rager and stepped a bit forward. Hollowmen afraid of threat ranges cautiously moved forward. Mad caps produced a couple of barrel bombs. Gorehound moved into the left circular zone. Light cavalry advanced forward.

Round 1

Round 2

As Mefju didn’t push hard, I decided to push instead. Seraph Slip Streamed left Angelius, and flared Gorehound dealing significant amount of damage. Hellion sprayed and finished Gorehound, hot dice involved. Thagrosh2 moved a bit forward, cast Manifest Destiny and Slip Streamed Typhon and used feat. Angelius charged a barrel bomb and with overtake killed Mad cap and couple of adjacent models. Exploding Mad cap model deviated in perfect direction and killed an Ice Witch and a Shepherd. It was exciting to see how it works in game, but a pitty that those were my models who died. Typhon moved forward and sprayed Frightmare to death. Forsaken leached all 5 fury. Right Hellion sprayed a single Neigh Slayer and repositioned away from the rock, as I was afraid of being ambushed there with Murder Crows. Neraph positioned himself behind the cloud and prepared to get the objective next turn. With my feat movement I recalled the beasts and moved them full backwards in order to be safe from retaliation.

Mefju aware of situation decided to put Murder Crows into the game. Flanking from both sides they run toward the middle of the battlefield engaging couple of the models on the way. Hollowmen moved forward but couldn’t shoot at anything. Neigh Slayers run forward to present serious threat. A single Cask Imp killed left Hellion. Old Witch couldn’t get screened with models, so Mefju decided to shift his caster to the left, keeping her within the killbox. Cage Raged run toward the caster. Nobody scored.

Round 2

Round 3

This turn I had to utilise my board advantage into scenario advantage, as I was afraid that the ability to return or to put new models into play can have a meaningful impact on the game in later stages. Two points were definitely at my grasp. Seraph used his animus to replace Typhon and shot some models. Angelius charged left Neigh Slayers, but since I couldn’t get the last one, I turned the other way and killed Glimmper Imp. Neraph killed the Objective. Thagrosh replaced Forsaken with Seraph’s animus and sprayed couple of Mad Crows. Right Hellion flew over the rock, used Wind Ravager and repositioned closer to the Hollowmen. Angelius shot Neigh Slayer after moving toward the middle of the rectangular zone. Slip Streamed Typhon pushed far forward, sprayed a couple of Neigh Slayers and used Excessive Healing. Forsaken moved forward and with the Pow 8 Blight Shroud removed 4 Mad Crows. Protector moved up to protect Typhon. I scored 2 points.

Mefju wanted to blow up my Angelius with Cask Imps. Sadly, rolling 6 on one of Cask Imps assured that the last Neigh Slayer will bite dust, quite unfortunate. Old Witch, accompanied by a Cage Rager, killed Angelius easily. Mefju cleared the left circular zone as Shepherd was the only contesting piece. Hollowmen charged Hellion, failing miserably to kill her. Twilight Sisters along with Old Witch returned 4 Neigh Slayers who moved back. On the right, last Mad Crows kept being annoying. Mefju scored 1 point, I scored 1 point as nothing was able to contest the middle zone, 3:1 in my favour.

Round 3

Round 4

I had to score 3 points in order to win, meaning I had to clear both circular zones. Hellion managed to kill a couple of Hollowmen. Typhon with last spray killed last contesting model. Ice witches had to run to the right zone. Thagrosh charged Mad Crows and effortlessly killed 2 last Mad Crows with his initial attacks. Seraph killed last Cask Imp clearing the left zone. I scored 3 points and we shook hands.

Round 4

I believe that having 1st turn here was crucial as I could get really far up the table what effectively forced Mefju to play really defensively. That allowed me to push forward with my warbeasts, attack and move back and be safe from any retaliation. After the game Mefju admitted that he messed up with Hollowmen, as due to their poor positioning couldn’t get any impact on the game.

All in all, it was a nice game and I was really happy to play with my rmachine friend from high school times! I was really satisfied with my list, but my excitement lowered a bit as soon as I found out what I will be facing in the following round. Stay tuned for the next battle report from second round of the tournament.
