Game #9 Thagrosh2 vs. Skarre3 – Corpses coming in waves

Hello everybody!

It’s time for 2nd round of our Tournament in Pruszków (next to Warsaw). In second round I was paired against Shonsu, who you might know as a Cygnar player describing his games here.

The scenario we were about to play was Spread the Net. One of the scenarios where you need to be able to contest turn after turn, or you will loose on scenario advantage. I was about to face either Denny1 with 6 Leviathans or Skarre3 with tons of bodies. I was aware that Shonsu won’t take Denny1 as he respected the threat that Lilo3 can project. I was quite sure that Shonsu will drop Skarre3, since she had a lot of shield guards and a lot of models that was certainly the safest pick. I knew that Lilo3 cannot handle the amount of models Shonsu will bring to play so I decided to drop Thagrosh2. We drew our pairings and Shonsu took Skarre3 indeed.

Shonsu’s Skarre3 list:

Cryx Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Infernal Machines

[Skarre 3] Skarre, Admiral of the Black Fleet [+27]

Mechanithralls (max) [9]

My Thagrosh2 list:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Oracles of Annihilation

[Thagrosh 2] Thagrosh, the Messiah [+25]
– Angelius [17]
– Angelius [17]

Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion [0(6)]
Spell Martyr [1]
Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1]
Blighted Nyss Shepherd [1]
The Forsaken [0(4)]
Ice Witches [7]

We rolled the starting roll and unfortunately, from my perspective of course, Shonsu won it and decided to go first obviously. I was to receive thralls in my face sooner than I thought.

Deployment

Shonsu deployed his dead masses on both sides of the big motorboat (cool conversion, btw). Leviathans on both sides of the flagship. 2 units without Brute Thralls in advance deployment.

I deployed rapidly, symmetrically again, being aware that I might be short on time in the late stages of the game.

Deployment

Round 1

Shonsu did what swarms should do – he pushed forward, as far as he could. Skarre3 cast Dash and Draconic Blessing on the farthermost thrall unit. All my ranged weapons were fire based, so I couldn’t hurt them this way. The only thing I could use were my magical spray attacks, or simply put a best against their ugly, dead faces. Rest of the models just run forward, left Leviathan tiptoed into the distant rectangular zone. Pistol Wrights, pesky ghosts I could do little about, were on flanking duty.

I had a tough nut to crack and I had to crack it fast. Those models were really far up the table and I had to figure out what to do or I will get flooded in my deployment zone. Fortunately I had quite a lot of magical sprays I could get use of. Hellion together with Ice Witches got rid of couple of the closest thralls. Thagrosh himself sprayed a couple and killed a Brut Thrall with arc noded scourge, that was quite unexpected. Neraph finished another two and sprinted away. Typhon sprayed the right unit. I filled him up to max fury and leached it with Forsaken with an intention to blow up in the following turn. All that took me a lot of time, but I felt quite satisfied with the results. That was a good opening.

Round 1

Round 2

Shonsu didn’t hesitate to cause me even more headache and kept pushing forward. Additionally he put an ambushed unit into play and swarmed my left flank killing the left Hellion. Skarre feated. Both Pistol Wrights contested left flag and right zone, just in case.

Round 2 Turn 1

This turn I had to contest Shonsu’s flag and zone, otherwise I would be in a serious danger of loosing on scenario. That would give Shonsu 4 point lead and I cannot allow that. I decided that this will be my feat turn. I definitely wanted to take advantage of my capabilities of removing infantry, meaning 2 Angelii and Typhon plus magical sprays. First, I sprayed what I could with Ice Witches and a remaining Hellion. Thagrosh feated, cast Manifest Destiny, Slip Streamed Forsaken moving outside of the rumble to get a good spray against a couple of thralls. Left Angelius killed plenty of thralls and left no Brute Thrall on that flank (they were already dead at the begining, weren’t they). As the middle unit was immune to fire I did what I had to do, Seraph charged and killed couple thralls. Neraph killed some more and sprinted to contest the rectangular zone. Forsaken moved up and killed a lot of models with his 5″ Pow8 explosion. Typhon together with right Angelius basically cleared the right flank, leaving only a couple of models there. With my feat move I contested the right flag, and killed more thralls with my warbeasts. Nobody scored a point. The battle was going my way, but since I was getting short on clock, Shonsu didn’t lose hope.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3

Shonsu in his turn could get rid of Neraph only. Right Leviathan failed misserably, and dealt only a few damage to Typhon. Shonsu scored only one point, in his rectangular zone.

Round 3 Turn 1

Since I was ahead on attrition I wanted to secure the victory this way. But I saw an opportunity to end this game earlier, as I was afraid of loosing that on deathclock. Since I failed to kill contesting Pistol Wright with my Ice Witch magical spray (I missed that even with a reroll) I decided to go for the CK. First Nephlim Protector and Thagrosh charged in and removed a Leviathan wasting only 3 fury on Manifest Destiny and buying one additional attack. Left Angelius after a short debate whether he can see Skarre or not, charged her and killed her with the last attack, hot dice involved.

Round 3 Turn 2

In order to check if in case of surviving the CK attempt Skarre could finish Thagrosh we simulated that later on and he would have survived with some boxes to spare.

That was an intense game in terms of removing a lot of infantry models. I was satisfied with my list’s capabilities but it took me a bit too much time and I definately need to improve that. After killing Skarre I still had ~10 minutes on my clock, nevertheless in games like this every second matters and I need to keep that in mind. Shonsu did what he could, swarming me really good, although Leviathans could did more job done with their cannons. Rolling poorly on the amount of the shots might have been the case. In the next round I was to face even more models… Is that even possible? How come it is even allowed? 😛

Cheers!
Piotr
