Haley2 vs. Old Witch3 – England Lions – WTC Round 4

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the delay in posting new battle reps, but I’m organizing my own wedding and it’s tough to squeeze in time to write reports 😛

In the quarterfinal we were paired against England Lions. Again, I didn’t have too many good matchups and I knew it was going to be a tough round in general. English WTC players are well known for their skill and knowledge about the game.

As the result of the pairing process I got to play with Patrick and his Grymkin army. The table we were going to play on was perfect for Grymkin (no surprise there, as we almost every round were picking pairings over tables) – with two impassable terrain (I played on this terrain set 3 times 😛 ). I practiced against this army a lot and I knew my Haley2 list was able to handle Grymkin( but it isn’t easy for sure). To be honest, that was the first Cygnar list I felt at least slightly comfortable into Clockatrices and what not ;p so the choice in list selection was quite easy. Patrick used to play Cygnar, and I didn’t expect I could surprise him with anything. He knew that Haley2 can handle bricks, so he decided to take Old Witch3 in Bump, instead of The Dreamer in Dark Menagerie.

You can find the pairings here.

Deployment

I cannot recall right now who won the roll, but I ended up being second.

Patrick deployed his forces symmetrically with Old Witch in the middle, Clockatrices around it and all infantry models on both sides.

I deployed Haley2 in the middle with Centurion and Thorn on her left and Thead, Strider and Stormclad were deployed on her right. The rest of the models were deployed somewhere in between.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Patrick ran his Clockatrices in the middle. He kept his Neigh Slayers away from Storm Strider who at this point was the biggest threat. Both Trapperkin instead of digging in simply ran behind the buildings in order to use Trap Door special action next round.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

At the beginning of my turn I kept in mind that Patrick has Murder Crows in his list, and I measured everything carefully to avoid getting ambushed. Most of the stuff was outside of my threat ranges and there was not much I could do. Then, I realized that with TK my Storm Strider can reach his Clockatrice. I moved my engine and started shooting, and that was the moment I realized that I will lose it to Murder Crows next turn. Not only I mispositioned it, I also crippled one of Clockatrice’s aspects and she jumped forward within charge range, ups. I activated the rest of my models before activating BE, so there was nothing that could threaten the Clockatrice. Arlan gave Evasive Action to my Stormclad in case he would like to shoot it.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Murder Crows charged my Strider from the right side. And left it on one box, I think. Then the hurt Clockatrice charged in, sprayed Stormclad (missed it lol) and with additional attack hit my Storm Strider. I used Hermit in order to negate the damage roll and pushed Clockatrice away, outside of 2”. After all I managed to use Hermit’s ability the way I always wanted to. Sadly, the other Clockatrice had Storm Strider within Assault range (just by 3mm) and hit it and dealt exactly one last damage point. If Strider would survive, well, that would be funny. Both Trapperkin moved forward and changed into Trap Door markers. I knew I was running out of time; 2 more turns and they will be able to charge Haley from the back. Both units of Neigh Slayers were flanking my army.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Losing my Strider this way was just so dumb. After so many games I’m still forgetting about ambush. First, I wanted to get rid of Murder Crows and Caine0 killed 2 with Trick shots (jumping off Hermit). Alexia created a Thrall to engage the countercharging Monkey. Then, Haley cast her feat and cast TK and TA on Thunderhead. Thead with Centurion managed to cripple couple of aspects but nothing more. I remembered to keep 5” distance between Clockatrice and Thead, in case they would like to jump forward to engage Thead after his first shot ; ) Sadly, I had to trample with my fully loaded Stormclad to the circular zone in order not to lose on scenario in the following round. Said jack killed two more Murder Crows. Thorn, after casting TK and TA through him, charged Neigh Slayers on the far left, but managed to kill only 1 or 2. Generally speaking, things weren’t going well. Haley’s feat bought me another round, but I wasn’t sure if that was going to be enough.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Patrick started with Clockatrices spraying Centurion. Then, Old Witch feated and returned a couple of cavalry models back to the game. Neigh Slayers got rid of Stormclad and Centurion. On the far right, Trapperkin and other Neigh Slayers wrecked Thorn. Patrick scored 2 more points and the game was essentially over.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

This turn I forgot about maintaining 5” between Thunderhead and Clockatrice and after crippling one of the aspects it jumped forward and engaged my jack. Fortunately, Thrall managed to finish it, so I could get at least some army points. Patric scored another point in the left zone, 0:3

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Patrick threw Thunderhead away and scored what was there to be scored and won the game.

Round 4 Turn 1

Afterthoughts

Well, losing Storm Strider essentially cost me the game, otherwise it might have looked totally different. Even if I wouldn’t do that reckless mistake, Patrick would create a wall of Clockatrices in front of me and most probably keep his Neigh Slayers far back as a counter charging pieces. The other unit would flank me from the left. Trapperkin were aiming for round 3 or 4 charge into my caster’s back.

Haley’s feat can deal with beasts, but it is almost useless if it comes to controlling infantry (you can feat on the leaders though). That’s why playing against Old Witch3 and infantry is difficult. I have tools to deal with Clockatrices, however in terms of killing Neigh Slayers I need to rely on my battle engine. I should have protected it at all cost. Strider almost survived (due to really bad dice at some point). Repulsor field and Hermit’s ability surprised Patrick a bit, but fortunately (well, that depends on point of view haha) another Clockatrice could get the job done.

I needed my battle engine to deal with infantry. After losing it I still could win that, but due to my mistakes on the way (like not keeping thead 5” away from Clocks, being forced to contest with Stormclad, not being able to kill any Clock in round 2 etc) Patrick controlled the game the whole time.

After all, it was a good game and playing against Patrick is a pleasure. He is a well-known skilled player who plays very clean and precise games. I’m looking forward to our next game ; )

Fortunately, my team won 3 games and we were in the semifinals! Whoa! Taking the worst table and a player nobody wanted to play against (you know why, not that Patrick is mean or something, he is just a great player :P) paid off again!

I wanted to include screen shots from the stream (instead of photos) and paste the link to the streamed game but sadly I cannot find it anymore. We just need to wait for the videos to be uploaded on YT.

Cheers,
Piotr
