Haley2 vs. Venethrax1 – Kraków Round 1

Hello everyone!

I went to Kraków not only to take part in preparations for WTC but also to play in a local Sunday tournament. There were WTC players as well as more casual ones, 12 altogether.

In the first round I played against Piotr, who I already faced during Polish Team Championship, we were playing Nemo3 against Gaspy3 Slayer spam, you can check the game here.

Happy Piotr 😉

I had Haley2, slightly modified – I swapped a Centurion with a Stormclad (for its immunity to electricity, longer threat range and higher power), and Haley3 with Trenchers, that I even didn’t intend to put on a table. Piotr decided to take Venethrax and there we begun.

Piotr’s Venethrax list:

Cryx

[Venethrax 1] Lich Lord Venethrax [+26]
– Kharybdis [17]
– Kraken [35]
– Satyxis Blood Priestess [0(4)]
Axiara Wraithblade [0(6)]
Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor [5]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Satyxis Blood Witches (min) [8]
Satyxis Raiders (min) [10]
– Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]
Satyxis Raiders (min) [10]
– Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]
Scharde Dirge Seers [0(6)]

My Haley2 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Heavy Metal

[Haley 2] Major Victoria Haley [+25]
– Centurion [17]
– Stormclad [17]
– Thorn [13]
– Squire [0(5)]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [0(4)]
Journeyman Lieutenant Allister Caine [0(5)]
– Thunderhead [20]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
– Firefly [8]
Field Mechaniks (min) [3]
Storm Strider [18]

We played King of the Hill.

Deployment

Piotr won the roll and decided to go first. I could only pick a side. Piotr deployed Kraken heavily toward the left side, Venethrax in the middle, Kharybdis on the right and units in between.

I deployed Haley with a Firefly and Thead in the middle. A Storm Strider and a Stormclad were placed on the left, opposite to the colossal; Thorn and a Centurion were placed on the right. Centurion was supposed to hold the right zone by contesting the zone in the sweet spot, right behind the impassable terrain.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

With such long shooting threat ranges Piotr decided to spread his infantry across the table, hiding his caster behind a forest. Venethrax cast Lamentation.

Round 1 Turn 2

I rushed forward, but remembered to stay outside of Kraken’s charge range. I put Fire for Effect on Thunderhead and Arcane Shield on Centurion. Haley TK’ed the battle engine and gave Temporal Acceleration just for speed. My junior warcasters stayed really far back.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Piotr couldn’t charge in, so he decided to open fire with all the guns he had. Kraken shot at Thead and hurt Thorn also. His big gun aimed for a good deviation, it landed on my Journeyman Warcaster, but fortunately he had 1foc and survived on 1 box left. Then, Gun slingers opened fire to Thorn (missed once, and I dodged). Thorn was quite damaged at this point if I remember correctly. Both units flank me from the sides. Kharybdis stayed behind the impassable terrain.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

That was going to be my feat turn for sure. Haley cast Temporal Acceleration on Thunderhead, she TK’ed Stormclad and used her feat, catching the colossal and handful of other models. Centurion with AS moved into the zone. Firefly moved to be within 5” of Kraken and shot Gun Slingers. Thead moved in and shot 3 times at Kraken. Stormclad charged and killed the objective. Junior and Caine withdrew, as I didn’t want to lose them to a lucky deviation next round. Caine killed two Satyxis with trick shots and repositioned back. Battle Engine managed to hit its melee attack and one range attack, but sadly one Satyx survived. Nevertheless, I managed to score 2 points, 2:0.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Well, with most of his models under Haley’s feat influence, Piotr couldn’t do much. Ambushed Blood Witches charged in for the rescue. Kraken opened fire, but couldn’t get much. Venethrax wasn’t able to get too close without dying, so there was no way to get anything from Lamentation. Kharybdis moved back to be able to counter charge in case I would forget about the rule. Gunslingers moved my jacks with their special shots a little bit. Satyxis on the right weren’t able to kill the objective, as I picked two of them as targets of my feat, and it stayed on 6 boxes.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I managed to free up my Stormclad who charged the colossal. Storm Strider fried almost all but one Blood Witches who I missed because of Stealth. Stormclad and Thunderhead with Firefly’s help fried Kraken. Centurion got closer to the right hand side to contest or even get a point there next turn. Squire ran to score point on the flag and mechanics ran into the circular zone to score it. Caine killed one Satix on the right. I got 2 more points, 4:0.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Piotr didn’t see any opportunity to kill Haley and simply charged in to get some Army Points. Kharybdis and Venethrax wrecked Firefly and Thunderhead. The solo on the left charged Stormclad, and Blood Witch charged Storm Strider. Sadly, Satixis on the right simply couldn’t finish my objective and it survived on 2 boxes, 4:0.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

I killed the Blood Witch in the left rectangular zone, I TK’ed Kharybdis away and killed the last contesting model. Centurion with TK and TA charged Satyxis on the right and killed most of them. Caine finished whatever was left there with trick shots. I scored 4 more points, 8:0

Round 4 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

I think that in this particular match up and scenario I preferred to be the second player. It gave me an opportunity to feat when I wanted to and then I got a lot work done. Satixis ARM isn’t high enough to survive that many electro leaps. I had to watch out for lucky deviations, as in second round I almost lost Jr. Loosing Caine before killing Kraken would be a disaster! It was better not to get any focus for a turn (well, 1 from Arlan at least), than to lose both Caine and Thead. This way the game might have gone totally opposite direction.

All in all, that was a nice game with an intense moment when I almost lost Jr ; )  I hope we will play against each other again, soon!

As for the list, I was definitely happy with the change Centurion -> Stormclad, but I didn’t have too many models to contest the zones – something to think about.

In the next game I was going to face Baldur1 with nasty Tharns.

Cheers,
Piotr

  1. Looks like Haley2’s feat is still pretty game-changing even with the model count limitation. It seems to have nearly neutered one turn for your opponent in this game. Looks like any match-up with one or more huge-bases opposite Haley2 is a solid day for Cygnar. 🙂

I’ll have to try Haley2 again…Always hesitant to as my lists with her seem to suffer from severely low model count.

    1. Later on I modified the list slightly and added Alexia1. Try doing the same 😉 it’s only 10p that would allow you to play a couple of turns more, as you can easily contest with thralls from far far away!
