Haley2 vs. Wurmwood – WTC bootcamp day1

Hello everyone!

That’s a third game in Krakow, as a part of preparation for WTC, that I played against a lovely German player living in Kraków and his Wurmwood. I wanted to test my Haley2 list against a Circle Orboros list, so there we go.

Christph’s Wurmwood1 list:

Circle
[Theme] The Devourer’s Host

[Wurmwood 1] Wurmwood, Tree of Fate [+27]
– Storm Raptor [34]
– Wild Argus [7]
Gallows Grove [2]
Lord of the Feast [0(6)]
Tharn Wolf Rider Champion [0(7)]
Tharn Wolf Rider Champion [0(7)]
Boil Master & Spirit Cauldron [5]
Shifting Stones [3]
Shifting Stones [3]
Tharn Bloodweavers [8]
Tharn Ravagers (min) [10]
– Tharn Ravager Chieftain [5]
Tharn Ravagers (min) [10]
– Tharn Ravager Chieftain [5]
Well of Orboros [10]

The well was proxied by a PP’s proxy base and one of the Wolf Riders was proxied with a Storm Lance.

My Haley2 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Heavy Metal

[Haley 2] Major Victoria Haley [+25]
– Centurion [17]
– Centurion [17]
– Thorn [13]
– Squire [0(5)]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [0(4)]
Journeyman Lieutenant Allister Caine [0(5)]
– Thunderhead [20]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
– Firefly [8]
Field Mechaniks (min) [3]
Storm Strider [18]

We played King of the Hill.

Deployment

I lost the roll and got to pick the side. I knew that lack of Pathfinder will be an issue in this match up, and sadly, the objective was quite far. Christoph deployed Storm Raptor on the right with two Wolf Riders on its sides. Wurmwood, Cassius, Stones and Cauldron were deployed in the middle. Left flank was occupied by Tharn Ravagers.

I deployed Strider on the right, Haley2 and heavy jacks in the middle. Thorn took the left flank.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Storm Raptor ran forward, Wurmwood with Shifting Stones and Cassius took a comfortable position behind a building. Additionally, Wurmwood placed a forest to extend a LoS blocker even farther.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

I decided to keep my models out of Storm Raptor’s charge range. I cast Arcane Shield on one of the Centurions and Fire for Effect on Thunderhead. I kept Haley2 and other precious models out of Raptor’s shooting range.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Storm Raptor shot at Centurion (the one without AS) couple of times. Wurmwood moved into the middle of the zone, cast Curse of Shadows on the jack and feated. One of the units of Tharns ran to the distant part of the rectangular zone to contest it. Lord of the Feast stood somewhere between Shifting Stones and waited for a better moment.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Because of Wurmwood’s feat and lack of pathfinder I couldn’t get through to cut down the tree. I decided to feat, cast TA and TK on Centurion. I managed to kill couple of Tharns. I contested the left rectangular zone with a single mechanic, and Storm Strider moved into the other zone. Nobody scored a point.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Wurmwood upkept Curse of Shadows on my Centurion and withdrew to safety. A Wolf Rider and Storm Raptor finished already severely damaged Centurion. Ambushed Bloodweavers charged my Strider but failed to kill it. Tharns on the left killed a single Gobber and the unit leader, Argus scored a point there. Tharns in the middle simply moved to engage my jacks. 0:1 in Orboros favour.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I needed to score some points. I cast TA and TK on fully loaded Centurion and charged the Storm Raptor, that wasn’t enough. Thead with Firefly’s help managed to kill 3 Tharns behind the wall (although they passed couple of tough checks). Thorn charged the objective but left it on couple of boxes. At least he was contesting the zone. Storm Strider shot shifting stones and couldn’t hit Bloodweavers. I couldn’t score a single point.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

At this point the game was essentially over. Christoph scored 4 points easily. Tharns and Argus wrecked Thorn. Cauldron dragged Centurion and Storm Raptor with Bloodweavers destroyed both my battle engine and objective. Lord of the Feast ran to score the flag and this way Circle Orboros scored 4 more points and took the clean victory, 0:5.

Round 4 Turn 1

Afterthoughts

Lack of pathfinder in my list was painful. Even with Haley’s feat it was difficult to get enough job done. Wurmwood was able to buy enough time to mitigate my feat and pushed hard on all fronts. I couldn’t chew through Tharns and Wurmwood’s forest made the game a nightmare. Also, my list suffered from low bodycount, and I couldn’t score or contest everywhere I wanted to, and to be honest, it would be difficult anyway with one unit of Tharns on one flank and a Storm Raptor on the other.

The Storm Raptor is the biggest threat here as in order to kill him I would need to commit at least two heavies (as all my shooting is electricity based) and I don’t see any of the Circle players going for that 😛 that being said, I can deal with the rest of the army, but the next time I would play against a bird I would need to deal with him in another way.

Surprisingly, I found lack of immunity to electricity an issue, especially against Circle Orboros that has a bird in every other list. With the recent changes (back then) to Stormclad’s point cost I decided to swap a Stormclad for one of the Centurions for a game or two and check how would it go. Especially, since there were 3 Circle Orboros players on the tournament the next day and I expected even more on WTC obviously ;p

Cheers,
Piotr
