Haley3 vs. Krueger2 – Round 3 Kraków Masters

Hello everyone!

In the third round of I was paired against Circle Orboros. As soon as I saw Krueger2 in the opposite pairing I knew this was going to be Haley’s game. Deployment

I don’t remember who won the roll, but I was the first player. I was so happy that majority of my models were painted (well I didn’t manage to paint faces). I had a big building limiting my access to the left circular zone, but my friend was facing the same limitations on his side of the board, so it didn’t bother me that much at that moment. I put Alexia and Risen on the left flank, TLGs in the middle and most of my advance deployed models in the center left.

Piotr also noticed how difficult it could be to control the left side, so he decided to contest it as long as he could and focused most of his forces closer to the right side of the table. He found sweet spots for his Sentry Stones.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

The game begun very luckily for me, I managed to shoot off one of the Shifting Stones with my advance deployed Express Team. That wasn’t a game breaker but getting rid of teleportation surely allowed me to play a little bit more aggressively in general. I advanced forward and put the usual cloud wall in front of my army.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

After losing one Shifting Stone Piotr had to adjust his plan for the game, Fulcrum wasn’t that mobile anymore. Sentry Stones and Woldwarden created forest to hide rest of the army behind it. Woldwyrds were floating on the flanks waiting for the right moment.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

My plan for this round was to contest the zones and try not to give too many targets. I advanced and put the cloud wall a little bit further. Express Team continued to shoot enemy models, Wyrd in this case I believe. Ironclad get as close as possible and waited patiently behind the cloud.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Piotr decided to use his feat and take 2, maybe 3 scenario points. He also put two chainblasts on two Mannikins, limiting this way space for my cloud wall. Fortunately, he couldn’t clear the right zone and forgot to contest my rectangular zone, 1:2 in Circle’s favour.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

In this turn I had to score preferably at least one of the circular zones. The building was limiting my possibilities. I had only a Sentry Stone and a Woldwyrd to kill. Sadly, I left Wyrd on handful of boxes. Fulcrum, although already damaged, was still alive. We both scored a point, 2:3 in Circle’s favour. I couldn’t kill Sentry Stone with spells, and I had to send in Thrall there instead.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Piotr saw the opportunity to score more points and send in already severely hurt Woldwarden to take down my objective contesting my zone this way. Fulcrum got dangerously close to Ironclad, but Piotr wanted to utilize his spray attacks, Express Team was gone. 2:5 in Circle’s favour.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

I had to get rid of that Woldwarden in my zone and contest meaningfully. Ironclad managed to take Fulcrum Down, but sadly Woldwyrd stayed alive in the zone. On the other side another Wyrd was causing problems not wanting to die. Thorn after arcing a spell stepped into the rectangular zone to contest. I also didn’t want to risk Haley3 sitting in the middle of the hill in front of Krueger2 just to get 1 more point, I believed that Piotr won’t get 5 points advantage in his turn. Instead of scoring 3 points I scored none. That was sad. Still 2:5.

Round 4 Turn 1

To our surprise… Dice Down ended our game. We had over 12 minutes altogether on our clock. Sincerely, I don’t know when we lost that time, maybe explaining how Haley3 works and all Grave Diggers’ shenanigans just consumes too much time 😛 Since the winner wasn’t determined within the time frame, we decided to roll a die, as we both still had ways of winning that game (majority of Circle’s army was gone, I lost only Express Team and couple of Trenchers here and there, and Piotr had a significant point lead and time advantage).

The dice roll determined that this time Circle will take the victory.

Afterthoughts

To be fair, I wasn’t happy with how I played. I hate playing deep scenarios with Haley3 as this forces me to play really forward. I have an impression that I was waiting with the opening for too long, I should have pressed forward more aggressively. Especially, in the second round I could have moved farther. On the other hand, under Krueger’s feat I might have not been that easy. Haley3 likes to play reactively and in case the opponent is playing cautiously I find it difficult to find perfect opening. Perhaps, I’m spending too much time of looking for such move, instead of just getting the work done? Also, not scoring a single point in the third round was unacceptable.

I wanted not to lose so much that I forgot to focus on winning the game.

Despite killing Shifting Stone in the first round of the game I couldn’t take the victory home. I definitely need more practice with Haley3 and my beautifully painted Trenchers (it’s a subjective opinion 😛 ) to feel the army better.

Thanks Piotr for this cool game! That’s a pitty we didn’t get to play it till the end.

Cheers,
Piotr
