Haley3 vs. Old Witch3 – Round 5 Kraków Masters

Hello everyone!

In the last round of the tournament I was paired against a Grymkin player that recently took part in Boosted Rolls – WarRoomPL podcast – Tomek. We were excited to play against each other and that was a great opportunity to have another competitive game, since Tomek know his stuff very well 😉

Tomek excited to kick my ass

I opted for Haley3 in case Tomek would take Old Witch3, her Windstorm can be pain in the ass for Nemo. As predicted, Tomek took Baba Yaga and her chicken-legged hut.

Tomek’s Old Witch3 list:

Grymkin Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Dark Menagerie

[Old Witch 3] Zevanna Agha, the Fate Keeper [+27]
– Cage Rager [14]

My Haley3 list:

Cygnar Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Gravediggers

[Haley 3] Major Prime Victoria Haley [+25]
– Ironclad [12]
– Thorn [13]
Captain Maxwell Finn [0(6)]

Trench Buster [0(5)]
Alexia Ciannor & the Risen [10]
Trencher Commandos (min) [10]
– Trencher Commando Officer [4]

Trencher Express Team [5]
Trencher Infantry (min) [10]
– Trencher Infantry Rifle Grenadier (1) [2]
Trencher Long Gunners (max) [18]
– Trencher Long Gunner Officer [4]

We played The Pit II. In current SR2019 it is even wi(l)der, so it would require a totally different approach, refused flank maybe?

Deployment

Sadly, I lost the starting roll, at least I could pick the side with 2 clouds already in a perfect spot.

Tomek deployed his forces fairly centrally without any characteristic differences, his battle group in the middle and those nasty gremlin swarms on the sides, his Battle Engine was deployed in the back.

I deployed my Trencher Long Gunners in the middle to cover as much space as they could, Alexia and Risen on the left flank and Commandos on the other (so I would be able to contest both zones). I chose the side for Commandos because of huge rough terrain on the right flank. Ironclad was placed on the right side of the table, because of the wall on the left – so I wouldn’t allow Tomek to hide anything there.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Tomek cautiously advanced forward and measured the distances making sure I wouldn’t be able to shoot his beasts from outside of his control zone. He cast Windwall and placed his shield guards next to his crucial models just in case.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

I decided not to expose my models too much. I began with Express Team shooting his Gorehound and to my surprise crippling his Spiri. Those Express Teams and their grievous wounds are just toooo sweet. Now I didn’t really have to be afraid of that beasts, so Commandos advanced a little bit further than they normally would. In the middle I put casual cloud wall up. On the left flank I placed Thorn aggressively forward trying to force my opponent to play cagier there. I produced on Thrall and placed him within charging range of the objective.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Tomek anticipating my intents decided not to engage in any way and just took better position for the following round, trying this way to force me to engage on his terms. The wounded Gorehound withdrew.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

2 Thralls charged the objective and left it still standing in the zone. I killed Gremlin Swarm who was sitting in the zone, but I couldn’t get to leftmost Gorefound who was sitting behind the rock and decided to withdrew Thorn as I was afraid of losing it. Express Team shot the Gorehound again and Commandos charged in, sadly, failing to kill it. I moved my cloud wall forward. I also had to kill one of my Risen, as at the very end of the turn I noticed that he (thus whole my army) was endangered by a sneaky Rattler. Tomek was only waiting for me to forget, but once somebody felt the pain of Rattler annihilating half of the Trencher army, he would never forget. Credits to Bartek. No points for me this round.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Then happened something that I was anticipating, Tomek scored 3 points by killing my objective and controlling both rectangular zones. He cleared the left zone and left Gorehound there and killed all of Commandos in the right zone, 0:3 in Tomek’s advantage.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

That left his beasts on the right flank prone to my charges. That was my first encounter with annoying Clocatrice. Having hear all the worst about that beast I came prepared. Ragman came in with his Death Field and Ironclad together with Finn managed to remove Cage Rager and I put grievous wounds on Clockatrice. Then, Commandos charged in with mini feat and even without anatomical precision I managed to cripple only one aspect. She jumped away, but I repositioned Commandos to stay in melee with her what gave my Buster Flank. One hit was enough.
On the left flank, another Thrall charged the objective, arc noded Force Hammer slammed Gorehound away, but somehow, I failed to kill the objective and didn’t score any points… 0:3 in Tomek’s favour.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Tomek managed to clear the right zone from my models, Skin&Moans loaded with corpses and Battle Engine with Entropic Force took their part in it. Gorehound took shelter behind the rock again. Sadly, I do not have a foto from that round, as we were running low on time.

Round 4 Turn 2

Finally! I managed to score my first point by killing the objective, sadly I couldn’t get that nasty dog behind the rock. And… that was the moment when terrible news came – another game ended with a Dice Down. I couldn’t believe that I was that unlucky 😛 another great game ended prematurely. This time it was a little bit different, Tomek at the beginning of the game went to get coffee and then went to the toilet and promised that in case of DD he would concede. He honored his promise and conceded.

Round 4 Turn 2

However, nobody forbade us from finishing the game just for the pleasure of playing, right? After submitting the results, we came back to the table and continued playing. I do not have any photos, as we had just a little bit less than 6 minutes combined. Tomek didn’t have enough time to get rid of all those models in the zones, on the other hand, I managed to clear the rectangular zone with the very last attack – Alexia one hit Crabbit and I quickly ended my turn. While Tomek wasn’t controlling any zone, I was scoring 1 point every turn. At that point Tomek didn’t even have time to get through my models to contest left rectangular zone, and I ended with couple of points of advantage. What a game!

Afterthoughts

I believe Grymkin are one of the hardest match ups for Cygnar, but if I must play against them, I would almost always pick Haley3. She is incredible (not only as for Cygnar standards hehe) and can play in various play styles.
However, I find her very difficult to master, and although I see great potential in her, I’m pretty sure that without dozens of games of practice I won’t be able to win too many games. That said, I decided to put her aside for a moment and give a try to much simpler and this way more reliable solutions. I will see where that will lead me. I cannot wait for the changes of Oblivion and I’m excited about how that may influence Haley3 list building.

Thank you Tomek for an amazing game! 😉

After that tournament I decided to give a try to Siege1, Kara Sloan, and even Haley2 for a short period, very short though 😛 We had a Pre-WTC Tournament in the near future, so I wanted to test team-oriented solutions. Afterwards, during the Warmachine-pause awaiting Oblivion changes I decided to play Legion. Now, that those changes are about to be released, I am excited about Cygnar again

Cheers,
Piotr

  1. Wow, I am amazed by how thoroughly and precisionly you have managed to put this battle report all together, considering time that has passed.
As you said, it has been an amazing game. It shows perfectly how hard it might be playing heavy beast/Jack lists into infantry. Especially when it gets to late game and you run out of models to be scenario relevant. Even tho I ensured my early advantage in CPs I have also learned my lesson to be more cautious in terms of positioning for the late game.
I am glad we have finished that game and that it went to you as it was most deserved win. Biggy up for you brah for standing ground in that particularly inconvenient MU for Cygnar.
    Peace!
