Kara Sloan vs. Makeda3 – PreWTC Tournament – Round 3

Hello everyone!

In the third round of the PreWTC tournament we faced team from western Poland. Their team consisted of Skorne, Protectorate, Grymkin, Circle and Legion. Although, I considered Legion a very good matchup we couldn’t find any reasonable answer to Skorne. In order to maximize our chances of getting 3 wins we decided I will take the bullet and play against Skorne (Marcin of WarRoomPL), while my friends will get favourable matchups and defeat at least 3 other players. At least that was the plan 😉

I knew that I couldn’t reasonably keep up on attrition, neither against Rasheth nor Makeda3, so I decided on taking Kara Sloan and hoped to get the perfect angle on enemy Caster, and well… this report will be rather short.

Please keep in mind we played SR18 back then.

Deployment

Sadly, I lost the roll and Marcin took the first turn and deployed his huge bases closer to the right edge, remaining beasts on the left and Makeda3 in the middle.

I deployed my firing squad in a line, 4 Hunters on each side.

Deployment

Round 1

Skorne ran forward, just outside of my 22” threat ranges.

I advanced forward and tried to keep my models outside of Hydra’s long threat ranges. Sadly, there is no photo.

Round 2 Turn 1

Marcin didn’t hesitate a bit and advanced forward. Hydra advanced and sprayed several times. It turned out that Hydra’s threat range is a little bit longer than I expected, Gladiator cast Rush on Hydra and I ended up losing Harlan and two of my forwardmost Hunters got severely hurt. Marcin had shield guards within range to take Shadow Fire. Makeda3 used Hydra’s animus. His battle engine engaged two of my Hunters. A whole unit of Pain Givers stayed in the circular zone. Access to his zone was seriously limited.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

I couldn’t make Hydra invisible with Shadow Fire to get to Makeda. I decided to focus on Hydra, but it was extremely difficult to take her down and even with my feat I managed to barely scratch her, taking maybe ⅖ of her health. Losing Harlan hurt a lot, since Purgation against a beast with an animus on it could be impactful. Two of my Hunters had to engage Hydra in melee, since they lost their cannons. The list was not able to seriously threaten the gargantuan. Even if all my Hunters would be fully functional and hit all of their shots (excluding shield guards) it would be dicey. We both scored a point in our circular zones.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Marcin went for scenario advantage. He easily removed Hunters blocking Hydra, said gargantuan easily removed my objective. Marcin scored 4 points, two on the flags, one in his circular zone and another one by destroying my objective, 1:5 in Skorne’s favour.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I couldn’t find any angle to Makeda, and Marcin scored 2 points more in my turn, taking the game with 6 points advantage, 1:7.

Round 3 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

Well, there is not too much to be said. This matchup is simply terrible. Only in case I would have all Hunters alive, with some lucky dice I would be able to kill Hydra. And even if, the rest of Marcin’s army would crush my fragile Hunters. I was counting on a mistake that never came. Marcin executed his plan very well.

Sadly, one of my teammates’ games didn’t go as planned and we lost 2 to 3 as a team. We still had high hopes though. The tournament was announced as a 5-round tournament regardless of number of teams attending, so despite losing one round we still could win the event. The fight continued!

After finishing last game of the day earlier I could relax a bit, instead I decided to play one more friendly game with Robin, but honestly, playing Mirage against Krueger2 wasn’t too pleasant and didn’t last too long, so I will spare you (and myself) the time and just tell you that Siege1 is not a good matchup against Krueger2 😛 I wonder how Krueger2 is doing on Bunker in most current SR19.

My next two games will be much more exciting, believe me! An almost exact Cygnaran mirror matchup is involved, then am amazing comeback and scoring 7 points in less than 30 seconds!

Cheers,
Piotr
