Kara Sloan vs. Child

Hello everyone!

Right after our local tournament where I played only two rounds (there was an uneven number of players) I felt I need more Warmachine that weekend ; ) I decided to test an idea for our incoming 5 vs. 5 preWTC tournament in Szczyrk. The list lock date was getting dangerously close and we needed to find a solution. One of the ideas included Kara Sloan and spamming Hunters. We wanted to create a very skewed list that would pose a serious threat to certain number of lists, what would force the other team to take uncomfortable match ups. In a team environment it is important to cause as many problems during pairing process, and by problems, I mean unconventional lists or several counters to meta lists, not disturbing our opponents in picking lists : P

The idea behind the list was to create extremely well shooting list that would be able to wipe out most of the models top of 2. Additionally, it still needed to stay relevant scenario-wise, thus the inclusion of 2 units of mechanics.

Karol’s Child list:

Grymkin
[Theme] Dark Menagerie

[Child 1] The Child [+29]
– Clockatrice [13]
– Clockatrice [13]
– Clockatrice [13]
– Crabbit [0(-)]
– Crabbit [0(-)]
– Gorehound [6]
– Gorehound [6]
– Gorehound [6]
– Skin & Moans [15]
– Skin & Moans [15]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Gremlin Swarm [0(3)]
Gremlin Swarm [3]
Death Knell [13]

As for proxies – Leviathans were representing Clockatrices. Gorehounds we proxied with some kind of hounds. I do not remember what Arcana did Karol take, one of them was Sacrifice for sure – the only I was really afraid of.

My Kara Sloan list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Heavy Metal

[Sloan 1] Captain Kara Sloan [+28]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
– Hunter [10]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [0(4)]
Harlan Versh, Illuminated One [0(4)]
Journeyman Lieutenant Allister Caine [0(5)]
– Ace [10]
Field Mechaniks (min) [3]
Field Mechaniks (max) [5]
Lynus Wesselbaum & Edrea Lloryrr [5]

I proxied 5 additional Hunters with any light warjacks, Haley2 was used as Kara Sloan and Stormblades were playing as second unit of mechanics. Normally, I have most of those models (well, apart from 5 more Hunters), I just didn’t bring them that day. Oh, and Junior represented Harlan Versh.

We played The Pit II.

Deployment

I lost the roll and Karol decided to go first. He deployed his forces heavily concentrated on the left flank with a clear intention to take over that side, score points there and contest turn after turn the zone on the other flank.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Karol ran forward avoiding my extreme threat ranges.

Round 1 Turn 2

I knew that at some point I will have to start scoring more points than Karol to win this game. The easiest to score would be the rightmost zone, so I shifted my forces rightward and pushed hard toward that side. Although I moved my forces this way, I left most of the Hunters within shooting range of the left zone to be able to deal as much damage as possible. I also put one of the Hunters behind the forest on the far right in case Karol would like to hide Gorehound there.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

As predicted, Karol put a couple of Gorehounds and Gremlin Swarms in the right zone to be able to contest it for as long as possible. On the other side, his battle group grouped behind/in the forest trying to avoid my shooting.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

The most difficult thing in playing a shooting list against Grymkin is not to let them use Sacrifice. With those fragile shield guards – Crabbits – it is sometimes extremely difficult. Additionally, Clockatrices could simply teleport outside of my shooting range, or teleport within shield guarding range, so that was something I had to take under consideration while setting up my firing squad. I began with Lynus and Edrea advancing into the circular zone and giving my caster Applied Knowledge. Kara Sloan used her feat and started peeling off the first clockatrice choosing the right columns. With combined efforts of all Hunters on the left side I managed to kill not only a Clockatrice, but also one Skin&Moans and that was huge! Whenever the shot was shield guarded, I simply didn’t boost the damage, this way it was impossible to kill a Crabbit with a single Hunter’s shot. On the other flank Hunter received magical attacks from the objective and killed one Gremlin Swarm and used his second attack against one of the Gorehounds. Ace shot said beast and his trick shot killed the other Swarm. Another Hunter finished that Gorehound and I was one model away from controlling the zone, sadly, I couldn’t get it. I scored 1 point in the circular zone, 1:0.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Karol didn’t expect that I will clear the other flank that easily, so he had to rush toward that side in order to keep up the scenario game. Both Clockatrices rushed forward and each killed a Hunter damaging the other. Skin&Moands was positioned in both zones to contest. Karol easily cleared his rectangular zone. Gorehound stayed in the other and engaged as many Hunters as possible dealing some damage. We had a tie, 1:1.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

To be fair, outside of my feat turn this list suffers from low amount of attacks. That forces me to get as much work done on the feat turn as possible. I managed to knock down the Clockatrice on the hill and kill it with whatever I had in my list. I also managed to remove that nasty Gorehound. On the other flank I kept contesting the zone with a single Mechanic, there was no sense in putting anything more there, as Grymkin player would be able to kill anything there basically (even if, I didn’t have too many models there). Sadly, I didn’t have enough attacks to push S&M out of the circular zone – I needed at least two Thunder Bolts, because of Crabbit hiding behind it – so I withdrew Lynus and Edrea from the zone and waited for the next turn. I scored one more point, 2:1.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

For some reason I miss remaining photos from the game. But we played that out quickly. From then on, I was too far for Grymkin models to charge more than one Hunter at a time. Ace and Caine would push that model 3xd3 inches away and the rest would just spit fire on that model. S&M had 2 corpses and 4 Hunters should deal around 24 dmg alone (depending on aura though). Then, Caine0, Ace and Kara would most probably kill it nevertheless. We both scored a point, 3:2.

Round 4 Turn 2

I managed to contest the opposite rectangular zone and score points both in circular and my rectangular zone, 5:2. As predicted, I managed to kill S&M.

Round 5 Turn 1

Clockatrice got closer, Karol cleared his zone but couldn’t contest mine; we both scored a point, 6:3.

Round 5 Turn 2

After killing the Clockatrice and contesting the other rectangular zone, I scored 2 more points I needed, 8:3.

Afterthoughts

Without remaining photos, it is difficult to recall what happened exactly, but I believe I gave most precise account possible at the moment.

This list turned out to be surprisingly effective against Grymkin brick. I was genuinely shocked how smoothly it all went. I needed more tests, but we didn’t have much time till the list lock, and we ended up sending the list; I simply had to learn how to play it properly and find what match ups it would like to fight.

It all might have ended other way around if I rolled below average and for example leave one Clockatrice alive, on couple of boxes. This would limit my possibilities and Sacrifice would spoil all my plans. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. Another good idea for Grymkin player is to hit and damage his own shield guards a turn before my feat. That would pose a serious threat of my unboosted Hunter POW 6 shot killing Crabbit and activating Sacrifice. Don’t tell that to Grymkin players ; )

Cheers,
Piotr
