Kara Sloan vs. Iona – PreWTC tournament – Round 2

Hello everyone!

In the second round of PreWTC Team event we faced one of the contenders, where 3 out of 5 players were WTC2018 finalists. Sadly, my lists didn’t have any answer to most of the lists, and we agreed that instead of taking a, let’s say, 60% match up I should take a more problematic one, so my teammates would be able to get better chances, what after all could grant us a win.

In the end I was paired against Tomasz and his Circle Orboros. We were to play Kara Sloan against Iona.

Deployment

I won the roll and for this matchup it was huge. I deployed my models in a wide line, Kara Sloan, Ace, Caine0 in the middle and Hunters symmetrically on the flanks.

Tomasz deployed Storm Raptor and one unit of Tharns on the left. Iona, the Pot, White Mane in the center on the hill. Another unit of Tharns and two Wolf Riders were deployed on the far right. Lord of the Feast stood proudly in the very middle, the twins were deployed in the forest.

Deployment

Round 1

I ran with Hunters as far as possible, but in the same time I wanted to stay out of running and engaging range. I also didn’t want to get in bird’s range.

Tomasz ran forward and took advantage of the terrain placement. Part of his Tharns stayed in the forest. The other unit hid behind the forest on the left. Storm Raptor maintained safe distance, what thanks to Fly High rule wasn’t that difficult. Iona stayed on the hill. Lord of the Feast withdrew on the hill.

Round 1

Round 2 Turn 1

That was going to be my feat turn. I started with Kara allocating spare focus, casting Guided Fire and used her feat. Immediately my Hunters opened fire. I found good angles to negate cover bonus for some of the models. I missed one or two attacks, but in general Tomasz suffered heavy losses. I managed to kill the Wolf Rider next to the clock and left very few Tharns alive.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Tomasz regretted not using his feat in the first round. With so few models alive Circle player had to figure out what to do. Iona decided to feat and cast Surefoot on the right unit. Those Tharns ran to jam my Hunters and contest my rectangular zone. One Tharn ran to the forest on the left to contest my flag. The bird with Wolf Rider’s help cleared easily the circular zone. Raptor repositioned back to the far rectangular zone and Tomasz scored 3 points this way, 0:3.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

My plan for the turn was to clear my zone and the flag on the left and contest the opposite flag with a mechanic. Unfortunately, Tharns in my zone that were engaging Hunters were extremely difficult to hit. I tried to kill them in melee too, but it was impossible due to their now high armor and tough/no kd. Also, I couldn’t hit the Tharn contesting my flag what resulted in not scoring a point there. I only managed to kill couple of Tharns and last Wolf Rider and contested the distant rectangular zone with a mechanic and the distant flag with the other mechanic, that was it. If I remember correctly, I missed one of the Tharns and he dodged back into my zone.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Tomek easily killed two contesting mechanics, killed Lynus&Edrea in the middle and scored three points, resulting in a 0:6 win.

Afterthoughts

After an amazing second turn, as soon as the steam went off, I couldn’t effectively get rid of contesting models. Tomek used his remaining Tharns to maximum effect – contesting the zones and putting them in the right spots. If only I would be able to score 2 more points the fight would continue. I think I should have focused more on getting the scenario points and contesting the zones, rather than killing enemy models, but to be fair, after the feat turn there are not enough attacks. Perhaps, having a couple of Minutemen would help. Additionally, the terrain has a huge impact on this list’s efficiency.

Happily, as planned, my team won 3 games and we were still in the winning bracket!

Cheers,
Piotr
