Kara Sloan vs. Skarre1

Hello everyone!

That’s another game where I wanted to test Kara Sloan in supposedly difficult conditions. This time I was to play against Bartek and his pesky undead warriors. He also had two incorporeal Wraith Engines.

Take note it is a SR2018 game.

We played Recon II.

Deployment

Luckily, I won the roll and obviously took the first turn. That was Bartek’s first game against Kara and he felt it was unfair I could see through his Theme Force’s clouds. Well, his two Bane Thralls could wreck my Hunter, so I argued otherwise haha

No more proxies! I bought 5 Hunters second hand and was ready to test. I deployed my mechanichs on the flanks and 4 Hunters on each side. Kara, Caine0, Ace and all the other models were placed in the middle.

Bartek deployed his models fairly symmetrically – Skarre and engines in the middle, his cavalry on the left and infantry on the right. Stalkers were advance deployed later.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Nothing special, I just ran as far as I could and stayed away from Stalkers’ threat ranges.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Bartek, after realizing that no matter what I will have everything in range, went all in and just ran forward awaitng my move. He took advantage of opportune terrain placement and hid his heavy cavalry in the cover, what was about to have disastrous consequences for me. Bane Warriors stayed in clouds. Stalkers surrounded Skarre and prepared to jump into action. Both Wraith Engines were eager to join in next round, too.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Well, this was not looking good. I had to somehow protect myself from losing everything top of 2. I decided to layer my defences and put Mechanics in front to deny impact attacks – additional damage to Hunters if they were somehow going to survive. Then first and behind them – second line of light jacks. I used my feat and opened fire. When dust settled, only two Raiders were gone, all the other attacks missed or only slightly damaged the cavalry. Placing them in cover surely helped. On the other flank things weren’t looking any better. Some of the Warriors managed to pass their tough checks. I ended up using my feat and killing only a couple of models and Tartarus. That wasn’t looking bad, it was a disaster.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Bartek was more than happy to start rolling dice. First, Skarre used her feat and poped some spells. On the right flank, enemy forces basically anihilated half of my army and left only a gobber and Harlan alive. Killing a living models helped creating a Machine Wraith that took control of Ace and moved him away. In the middle, the other Wraith Engine charged deep into my lines looking straight at Kara Sloan with a (now very corporeal) nasty smirk. Another Machine Wraith displaced one of my Hunters. On the left flank… dice circus continued. Somehow my brave mechanics managed to stop cavalry charges, Bartek simply missed the impact attacks. That was something I was waiting for, the only thing that could save me! Bartek scored 2 points, 0:2.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Now my plan was simple and I had more than enough time to find a way of killing Skarre. With Caine’s, Ace’s and Kara’s help I managed to clear a path, Thunderbolted one Raider away and killed the other. I managed to aim no more than four guns at her. With around 8 damage already taken (because of her feat) and only 1 focus it wasn’t too hard to finish her off. I had 4 shots on -7 . Couple of spikes later we shook hands and, to my surprise, I won.

Round 3 Turn 1

Afterthoughts

To be fair, this should have ended very differently. Those two mechanics shouldn’t stop those Bane Raiders, that was simply pure luck. This situation (and only 1 foc on Skarre) allowed me to go for the assassination.

On the other hand, the lesson here is not to surrender and cause as many problems to the opponent as possible, even if that means hoping that your opponent won’t be able to roll 7s on impact attacks ;P

Cheers,
Piotr
