Nemo1 vs. Stryker2 – Local summer tournament – Round 2

Hello everyone!

In the second round of our 40-points tournament I faced another Cygnar player. I had a tough nut to crack, as Marcin brought two very strong lists – Stryker2 in SD and Siege1 in HM (with Storm Strider). It took me a while to decide which list to pick. Electing Nemo1 was surely going to diminish my list’s damage output potential, however it would limit both enemy list’s potential too (being electro immune helps for sure). On the other hand Caine1 would be able to kill infantry from afar. However, Deceleration on Stryker2 and Siege’s feat combined with electro leaps or Triumph’s accurate shots effectively convinced me to take Nemo1 – much safer and more forgiving option.

Marcin elected Stryker2, as he was probably aiming for an epic caster kill, hopefully not this time 😉

Marcin’s Stryker2 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Storm Division

[Stryker 2] Lord Commander Stryker [+28]
– Lancer [10]
– Stormclad [17]
Grand Master Gabriel Throne [7]
Storm Lances (min) [12]
Storm Lances (min) [12]
Stormblade Infantry [9]
– Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard [0(5)]

My Nemo1 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Storm Division

[Nemo 1] Commander Adept Nemo [+30]
– Dynamo [18]
– Firefly [8]
– Firefly [8]
Hermit of Henge Hold [5]
Storm Lances (max) [20]
Stormblade Infantry [9]
– Morrowan Battle Priest (1) [2]
– Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard [0(5)]

I decided to take Nemo1 because I really never played him on any tournament, and I played him only a couple times back in MK1 in friendly games. I put two Fireflies to deal with infantry and Dynamo to have a damage dealer in the list. I took Storm Lances to be the first to charge in and to soak some damage too, and obviously Stormblades to be the second line (as they always were, maybe the third line?). I put Morrowan Battle priest, because I had spare 2 points, and it’s always good to have a shield guard, especially next to your warcaster with victim stats 😛 I took Hermit too, just to be safer. In a hindsight I might have taken Gabriel for 7p, but Hermit felt the better way to go with Nemo1.

We played Recon II.

Deployment

My friend won the roll, but surprisingly decided to pick a side. I was happy to take the first turn.

I deployed cavalry on the right flank, Stormblades on the left, where they could be protected by a forest. The rest of the models were deployed between them.

Marcin deployed a unit of cavalry on each flank, Stormblades in the middle, together with Stryker2. Stormclad stayed on the right, Lancer on the left. Gabriel (proxied by Katherine).

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

My left flank ran as far as possible, 10 inches that is. Stormlances ran full ahead and took good position for the following round. Dynamo and Fireflies took the center, next to the objective. Nemo and Hermit marched forward. Hermit used his Grip of Shadows, simply to give +1 FOC to Nemo1.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Marcin played it carefuly, his army advanced cautiously forward. Storm Lances hid behind the cloud. On the left flank, the other unit ran farther, taking advantage of the forest. Stormblades ran as fast as mine, so they already stayed behind. Marcin played it safe and waited in anticipation for my turn.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

My threat ranges weren’t long enough to reach the opposite army. Instead, I decided to play it safer, withdrew on the right and reorganized the middle part. I left Storm Lances far enough to threaten any model that would contest the zone. Hermit ran to the flag. Firefly toed into the left zone. I didn’t want to have my whole army engaged by Stryker’s feat movement so I kept my units in layers to prevent that from happening.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Marcin didn’t take the bait and repositioned his army slightly. Stormclad toed into the right-hand zone. Storm Lances maintained their position on the right. Storm Lances moved wider toward the left edge of the board. Stormblades advanced forward, together with Stryker2. Marcin’s caster was getting dangerously close to mine, and that wasn’t something I wanted to happen. We both scored a point on our flags.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

I decided that was the moment to strike, as Stryker was getting closer and closer to my army. Stryker’s alpha wasn’t something I wanted to receive. Two Storm Lances charged Stormclad dealing significant amount of damage (crippling both arms, iirc). The third Storm Lance killed the enemy one. Stormblades charged cavalry on the right and I manged to kill the only one that was in range. The other members of the unit stayed safe behind the forest or simply far from danger. Nemo moved Firefly with Locomotion backwards, cast Lightning Shroud on the light warjack and moved away from Stryker. Sadly, I had to use Locomotion this way, otherwise I wouldn’t be far enough after casting LS to be safe from Stryker’s sword of doom. Nemo used his feat, disrupting Stormclad (my friend pointed out it has to damage first, my mistake). Said Firefly charged in and killed one Storm Lance, and dealt 4 damage more to the last one. This time I decided not to move Dynamo backwards, as I wanted him to be part of action next round, and I didn’t really believe Stryker himself would go for him. I contested the enemy flag and scored a point on mine.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Well, how wrong was I. Marcin hesitated for a minute but decided to go for it. Stryker overpowered for 12 dmg and gained something around 8 POW. He moved 4″ forward thanks to Velocity and charged Dynamo. Hermit helped in denying the charge damage 😉 but the last attack finished the job and Dynamo was no more. The rest of the enemy army took care of my first line. Happily, Firefly stood his ground and kept the zone contested. Stryker moved within 2″ of Nemo and dealt him 12 damage. I had 1FOC to spare so I denied 5 dmg. Honestly, after getting a slight ARM buff to 15 it was mathematically impossible to get killed by a 15 POW boosted melee attack, thanks to the 1 FOC I had.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I had to play out this very carefully, as not killing Stryker this turn would mean getting Nemo killed instantaneously the next turn. Hermit put his -2 ARM aura. Morrowan Battle Priest charged Stryker’s back, missed his first attack, hit the second and dealt a couple of damage. I had Firefly with full foc, but I decided to give Nemo the opportunity to finish the game himself. And he did. Who would have guessed that Nemo1 will be the one killing the enemy warcaster in combat lol.

Round 3 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

Thank you Marcin for the nice game! I planned to play this carefully and layer my forces. I tried to use terrain to my advantage. Getting the alpha strike on the false Cygnar probably encouraged my friend to go for the risky play. I believe he didn’t expect me to strike first. Getting both Stormclad’s arms crippled and killing half of Storm Lances was impactful. However, I believe Marcin still had the advantage in the long run. Stryker2 melee support abilities might have turned the tides easily. I would take the left flank, and maybe the right one, but the center would belong to Stryker and his Stormblades. He would eventually hunt Nemo down.

I believe this match up should go in favour of Stryker, but taking advantage of enemy’s mistakes is what makes this game fun, right? 😉

Cheers,
Piotr
