Nemo3 vs. Deneghra1 – Round 4 Kraków Masters

Hello everyone!

In the last round of the day, the fourth round of the tournament I was paired against a Cryx player that I know for long time, we played together many times in the past. It was great to know beforehand that the 4th round of a very long day would be a little bit more relaxed but still on a competitive level, since Jakup (or for most of us – Vampaj) is a good player.

Vampaj posing Satyxis style

After quickly examining my opponent’s lists I decided to take Nemo3 as he seemed to be the right pick into either of the lists. Jakub opted for Denny1 and bunch of Satyxies in various forms (Gaspy3 with Slayer spam was the other list). Nemo struggles sometimes against massive stealth, so that might have been the reason. As Jakub revealed later, he didn’t feel comfortable with any of his lists, so he picked the list he felt as comfortable as possible, at least enough to face Nemo.

Jakub’s Deneghra1 list:

Cryx Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Scourge of the Broken Coast

[Deneghra 1] Warwitch Deneghra [+26]
– Deathripper [6]

We played Recon II.

Deployment

My fundamental goal was not to get assassinated. Attrition wise I knew I had the advantage and my win condition was simply not to loose in a stupid way.

Jakub won the roll and decided to go first. He quickly deployed his forces heavily spread out.

I find this quite important not to lose too much time deploying models and considering different options, especially if you’re the first player. It’s good to have a “default” deployment that you can use probably in most of the games and scenarios. In case you are the second player, you should deploy reactively taking opponent’s deployment into account. However, in this case I couldn’t do much but deploy as usual with my Battle Engines on the flanks and everything in between. I decided to take the side where no Impassable terrain would block my models.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Cryx forces advanced cautiously and prepared to raid my lines in the following round. Jakub remembered to keep his models 4” apart in order to avoid unnecessary casualties.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

I put Arcane Shield on the right and Electrify on the left Storm Strider, Fire for Effect as usual on Thead. I decided to take the chance and use my opponent’s flag as an electric conductor. This way I managed to shoot one Satyxie, leap off the flag and fry the other. On the other side, my second engine fried just one, as there was nothing within 4”. Sadly, I misplaced Thead and went too far forward, what Jakub was about to take advantage of in the following round.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

As I said, Jakub took the chance I created and, to my surprise, easily removed Thead from the equation. All the debuffs were more than enough to change POW 10 guns with Heart Seeker ammo into deadly weapons. Additionally, ambushed Blood Witches somehow managed to charge my leftmost engine around the building what resulted in loosing Electrify on it. He put considerable amount of damage to my engine, loosing it that turn could be disastrous.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Despite Thead no more and my engine barely alive I had to stay focused and continue executing my plan – killing anything that could threaten Nemo and scoring scenario points. Well, with that many electro leaps and models to leap off I didn’t have any issues with removing most of the Satixies that got close enough. I healed my engine and called the storm. First, I took care of the arc nodes and continued frying whatever was left there. In order to do that I didn’t need to use my feat. I freed my left engine with Caine and Ace Trick Shooting blocking models to death. I couldn’t finish the arc node in the right rectangular zone, but his arc node was crippled. All models contributed somehow, and I ended up scoring 2 scenario points, 2:0 in my favour.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

After the devastating turn, Jakub had to score points to keep up. Cryx pirates finished my engine on the left but couldn’t get rid of remaining models in that zone. My flag and the zone were contested by couple of Satixies and a light jack. Cryx forces were spread out again, but I still had more attacks than enough. 2:1 in my favour.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I smoothly cleared the right flag and zone securing 2 more points. On the left flank, I Thunder Bolted Slayer backwards, outside of the zone and fried all the Satixies but one. I sometimes used my own mechanics as targets for electro leaps, sorry. Unfortunately, I was unable to contest the other flag, 4:2.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Jakub managed to free the left zone of my models and together with his flag, scored 2 points. His light jack contested my flag and one of the last Satixies contested the zone. 4:4.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

I knew I had huge attrition lead, and sooner or later I will start scoring more points than my opponent. I only had to play safe and keep Nemo alive. Time was running, but at that point it should be enough. I killed both contesting models, killed the objective and contested my opponent’s flag and zone, 7:4 and more than 6 minutes left.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

Jakub killed the contesting mechanic and Deneghra together with Slayer finished my Firefly, scoring 2 points this way. There were no models to spare, so my flag and zone remained uncontested, 9:6.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

I only had to contest my friend’s flag and zone what Firefly was capable of. I scored 2 more points and we shook hands.

Round 5 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

This match up was surely hard for Cryx player. I had an impression that the whole game (well, apart from the moment when I recklessly misplaced Thead 😛 ) was under my control. I managed to keep Nemo3 safe and kept continuously increasing my attrition advantage. To be fair, I wasn’t too far from losing it bottom of 2 😛 but I kept my head cool and carried on with the plan. If only I misplaced Nemo, I’m pretty sure Jakub wouldn’t think twice and would just go for him.

Thank you Vampaj for the game!

Cheers,
Piotr
