Nemo3 vs. Makeda3 – A Swift Retaliation

Hello everyone!

That was the only game I managed to play between two major tournaments and I wanted to get the most out of it. I wanted to test my Nemo3 list against a raging superpower – Makeda3 with Immortals. I knew I would probably see her a lot in the upcoming tournaments.

Paweł’s Makeda3 list:

Skorne Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] The Exalted

[Makeda 3] Makeda & the Exalted Court [+25]
– Aradus Soldier [16]
– Aradus Soldier [16]
Abidan the Keeper [0(5)]
Ancestral Guardian [0(5)]
Ancestral Guardian [0(5)]
Extoller Novitiate [2]

Immortals (max) [13]
– Extoller Advocate [3]
Immortals (max) [13]
– Extoller Advocate [3]
Supreme Guardian [16]

I believe that’s the strongest Makeda3 form I have seen so far (from Cygnar point of view). Bugs are really difficult to take down. You have plenty of immortals and two battle engines on top of that, everything the list needs.

My Nemo3 list:

Cygnar Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Heavy Metal

[Nemo 3] Artificer General Nemo [+25]
– Firefly [8]
– Firefly [8]
– Thunderhead [20]
– Squire [0(5)]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [0(4)]
Journeyman Lieutenant Allister Caine [0(5)]
– Ace [10]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
– Firefly [8]
Field Mechaniks (min) [3]

Storm Strider [18]

Deployment

Sadly, Paweł won the starting roll and elected to go first. I chose the side where my movements wouldn’t be limited by a building in front of the deployment zone.

Paweł deployed his forces fairly symmetrically with Makeda3 and Abidan in the middle, battle engines on the sides and two full units of Immortals on the flanks. Two bugs were advance deployed later on.

I deployed Striders on the sides, Caine0 with Ace on the left, Junior and his Firefly on the right and the rest in the middle with an intention of going wild with Thead 😉

Round 1

Paweł ran forward and stayed outside of my threat ranges.

I did the very same thing, ran forward outside of any melee threat ranges. I put Arcane Shield on the right battle engine and Electrify on the left one. I also put Magnetic Field up and waited patiently for what Paweł would come up with.

Round 1

Round 2 Turn 1

Paweł decided to simply go forward and stand his ground. Abidan ran forward and engaged Thunderhead and Firefly, as Paweł knew that Thead has no Dual attack or Gunfighter. He spread his unit across the right circular zone and put 4 of Immortals forward. The left unit took cover behind the forest.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

I decided to go all in, feat with Nemo3 and open fire (with electrical guns?) with all of my models. I wanted to deal with both Aradus Soldiers and at least one battle engine. Sadly, I managed to kill only one Ancestral Guardian leaving the beasts on handful of boxes. Thead, Fireflies and charging Storm Strider weren’t enough. I was dealing more damage with electro leaps than with my actual guns. Carapace surely is a thing. I commited the rightmost battle engine and one Firefly (proxied with Charger) to shoot at Immortals on my right flank and only 3 of them survived.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Paweł’s retaliation was swift and painful. He easily removed my Storm Strider in the center. Combined attacks of 3 Immortals left alive and one of the bugs resulted in another Strider falling down. The other bug charged and killed Thunderhead. I was hoping they would be long gone after my turn. Sadly, they survived and dealt the deciding blow. Without Thead and second Strider the game was basically over. In one turn Paweł essentially removed my whole army.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

I knew that was it, but I wanted to kill at least one nasty bug. Arlan charged it and splashed it with a 6, 6, 6 damage roll. Thanks Arlan, you’re a cool guy! Arlan the bug slayer. I conceeded as there was no need to waste more time on the lost cause.

Round 3 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

This game was one of those that I will remember for some time! I lost the entire army in one turn. I believe I was too greedy and wanted to take too much in one turn.

Being the first player in that match up deffinitely would help. After the second turn, Skorne models were already in the middle of the board, threatening very far. In case I would move back, shoot and stay outside of their charge ranges, I would give up on scenario this way.

I should have repositioned toward the right side while contesting the left zone. Charging in with the Strider wasn’t the best idea. Getting that one 13 POW damage roll more wasn’t worth the price I had to pay. Keeping the distance from that Ancestral Guardians is crucial, especially with huge based model.

The match up itself is not the easiest one. Three shield guards around Ancestral Guardians is already a thing to be worried about when you are playing a gun line list. Aradus Soldiers add even more survivability to the list, making it much harder to deal with. To be fair, I was surprised how durable Aradus Soldiers are. At first, I thought that shouldn’t be such a bad match up. Apparently, bugs change it a lot. I still expect a classic Makeda3 list (without bugs) to be easily playable.

All in all, next time I will play against against Makeda3 and Immortals I will know what not to do 😉 – keep Striders far from Ancestral Guardians, simple as that.

Cheers,
Piotr
