Nemo3 vs. Makeda3 – Round 1 Barcelona Masters

Hello everyone!

The Barcelona Masters finally began. In the first round I drew Abel – a Skorne player. I saw his lists and immediately knew what to take. Abel took out Makeda3 and I chose Nemo3. I felt pretty confident with the pairing, as I knew how Makeda3 works and I considered beast heavy list easier to handle than the exalted set up.

Abel’s Makeda3 list:

Skorne Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Imperial Warhost

[Makeda 3] Makeda & the Exalted Court [+25]
– Agonizer [0(6)]

We played The Pit II.

Deployment

I won the starting roll and decided to go first.

I deployed my models in the usual way, 2 BE on the flanks with Thead and the old man in the middle. Fireflies all around, Junior on the right and Caine0 with Ace on the left.

Abel chose the side with the building to screen his paingivers that would be able to contest his weaker flank and put Hydra on his stronger flank. Makeda was placed in the middle, alongside with Archidon and both bugs.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

A standard first turn, I tried not to waste too much time and ran everything forward, keeping safe distance. I put crucial upkeeps up, FFE on Thead, Magnetic Field on Nemo, Electrify on left BE and Arcane Shield on the right one.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Abel, aware of my shooting threat ranges, decided to go for whatever was there to come and ran his bugs forward. Hydra stayed a little bit behind. Makeda and Archidon took advantage of the forest and stayed safe.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

I had a tough nut to crack. I had a couple of targets in my range and I had to decide which one do I want to focus first. I had 2 bugs in front of me, and with them having Hyper-aggressive, I needed to make sure I will somehow block their movement while continuously dealing damage. I figured out that with the correct angle I would be able to block one with the other’s base (since it has to go directly toward the damage dealer). I started with Firefly adding +2 to the dmg. Then I feated with Nemo3, shot them and continued with the rest of the army. After some time I finally managed to kill those nasty beasts. I even managed to deal some damage to Hydra with charging Strider. I believe Thead added a little bit too. All in all, I ended up with both bugs killed and Hydra significantly damaged. To be honest, I was happy with the result.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Abel did something that totally took me off guard. To my surprise, he simply ran forward with Makeda and Archidon and built up sort of a bunker in the middle of the board. Hydra easily removed my leftmost Strider. Razor Worm contested the right rectangular zone.

Round 3 Turn 1

With Makeda so close, in front of my models, I had to decide whether I should go for it or not. One solution was to run with Nemo and continue the attrition game, or to go for CK, that sometimes can get dicey. I decided to go for the latter, as I felt pretty confident that combined electro leaps, trick shots and powerful direct electro shots would be able to take her down. I began with trick shots and continued with electro leaps first. Due to Makeda’s Battle Driven rule she would get an arm bonus after being damaged by an attack, so I wanted to get my non-attack damage early. Sadly, even with three POW 10 trick shots and several POW 12 electro leaps aganist her ARM 16, I managed to deal only 2 or 3 damage. Additionally, I killed the Agonizer with surprisingly good rolls on leaps… so Makeda reaved fury from her dead beast. Last damage roll from Thunderhead forced Makeda to use her last fury to transfer the damage to Krea and the excess damage ALMOST killed her… she had only 1 hp left. Well… that was really unlucky.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Abel had only one thing to do, the thing that I failed to accomplish. The old man didn’t take it very well… and we shook hands.

Round 3 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

I was so frustrated with my rolls, but what can you do when it is just not your day? Roll more dice, I believe? Sadly, that didn’t work either. Abel really surprised me with simply running forward, but apparently that was the only thing he could do back then, since he would probably lose the long attrition game due to my shooting superiority and it payed off.

Abel is a great opponent and after the game we had lots of things to talk and laugh about 😉 I hope the next time I come to Barcelona we will meet again!

Well, with a loss in the very first round of the tournament I felt quite disappointed, but there were 4 or 5 rounds more, and anything could happen. I tried not to lose spirit. It’s a dice game and things like that happen a lot. That’s an important thing to keep in mind. Otherwise it would stop being entertaining.

Cheers,
Piotr
