Nemo3 vs. Makeda3 – Round 3 Barcelona masters

Hello everyone!

In the third round I was to play with a friend I met in Madrid. We didn’t get to play together before, so I was excited to finally have a game with Enrique! He had Xerxis2 and Makeda3 and I was anticipating the latter, so I took Nemo3.

Enrique’s Makeda3 list:

Skorne Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] The Exalted

[Makeda 3] Makeda & the Exalted Court [+25]
– Basilisk Krea [7]
– Molik Karn [19]
Abidan the Keeper [0(5)]
Ancestral Guardian [0(5)]
Extoller Novitiate [2]
Extoller Novitiate [2]
Extoller Soulward [3]
Hakaar the Destroyer [0(6)]
Immortal Vessel [3]
Immortals (max) [13]
– Extoller Advocate [3]
Immortals (max) [13]
– Extoller Advocate [3]
Supreme Guardian [16]
Supreme Guardian [16]

To be honest, I was happy to see Molik Karn as a part of Makeda’s battle group instead of Aradus Soldiers which I find more annoying, especially against my shooting list. I faced them in the first round of the tournament and before, playing against Paweł, in a friendly game just before the tournament.

My Nemo3 list:

Cygnar Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Heavy Metal

[Nemo 3] Artificer General Nemo [+25]
– Firefly [8]
– Firefly [8]
– Thunderhead [20]
– Squire [0(5)]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [0(4)]
Journeyman Lieutenant Allister Caine [0(5)]
– Ace [10]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
– Firefly [8]
Field Mechaniks (min) [3]
Field Mechaniks (min) [3]
Storm Strider [18]
Storm Strider [18]

We played Recon II.

Rock & Roll

Deployment

Sadly, that wasn’t me who won the starting roll. I chose a side with a little wall in the rightmost zone, so I could protect one of my Striders.

Skorne forces were deployed with huge statues on the flanks, Immortal units beside them and the battle group and supporting models in the middle.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Skorne forces advance with little statues in front and bigger ones in the back. Enrique wanted Vengeance movement so he left couple of models in my range.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

I decided to take the advantage of that situation and take my chances in frying as many Immortals as possible. I didn’t expect to be that lucky! With couple of shots from Storm Striders and several leaps I managed to fry 8 Immortals and the fight haven’t really started yet. That was really fortunate.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

After taking a while Enrique decided to send his models in waves and layered his forces, Immortals far up front and Supreme Guardians behind them, waiting for my Striders to close up. Beside them, I had Molik, Hakaar and other models to worry about. Obviously, some Immortals got resurrected. Oh, and the left Guardian blew up the whole unit of mechanics with a single explosion.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Obviously, I couldn’t let the Guardians charge my Striders, at all cost I had to keep them 11″ away, as I got a hint previously how would this end. I decided not to focus on Guardians now and fry the rest of the army first. Since I wasn’t going for the big guys I could save my Feat for later, what was great. I focused on the closest models instead. I managed to remove one full unit of Immortals on the left flank, killed some of Immortals from the other unit and dealt damage to Guardians, Hakaar etc. Stepping back with Striders ment I would give points to Enrique, but not more than 3 next turn, hopefully 😛 One point on the flag for Skorne, 0:1.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

As I didn’t put too many models in melee threat ranges Enrique took down all the contesting models in the left zone and easily scored points there. Hakaar destroyed the objective and delt some damage to Thunderhead. It was 4:0 in Skorne’s favour and I had to start acting quickly.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

With Makeda safe behind the forest I decided on going for the attrition game instead. I feated and started frying models. I freed my Thunderhead and use his Pulse to free other models killing Hakaar, Abidan and damaging one of the Guardians. With Fireflies’ help Striders took care of both statues. Sadly, the objective stayed alive and I scored 3 points while contesting Enrique’s flag, 3:4 in Enrique’s favour.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

At this point, essentialy whole Enrique’s army was gone. I didn’t misplace Nemo and he was safe where he was. Molik with Makeda’s help killed a Firefly, but that was about it. I scored 2 more points and took the lead, 5:4.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

I killed the objective, controlled both zones and scored a point on the flag taking the victory, 9:4.

Round 4 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

Whoa, that was an amazing game! Until second round I didn’t know really what to expect from this game, since I played against Makeda a couple of times and last time (well… both times) it didn’t go as smoothly as expected. This time I managed to keep Striders far from Guardians and save my engines long enough to deal the deciding blow by removing both statues in the same turn. Giving 4 points away was the only way I could win this game. Should I go all in, in the second round, I would easily lose the game. The conservative approach payed off. Killing so many models in the first round with random shots and electro leaps surely helped.

In this match up I believe Thunderhead was better pick than Dynamo. One shield guard could simply take the jack out of the equation. Thunderhead with his pulses freed up my entire front line and allowed me to deal more damage to the statues. Fire for Effect on him is as efficient as it can get.

It was a nice game with a friend and hopefuly the next time I come to Spain (or maybe you Enrique would come to Poland one day to play miniatures?) I hope we meet again!

Now guess which faction I faced in round 4? You probably guessed 😛

Cheers,
Piotr
