Siege1 vs. Cyrenia1 – Norway Munin – WTC Round 6 – The Final

Hello everyone!

I’m sorry for the huge delay but I’m slowly getting back to Warmachine after my wedding. It honestly costed me much more energy than I expected. Hopefully in a week or so I will start painting again haha Ok, let’s get to the important stuff.

We – finally – got to the finals!! We were super excited! We won the previous round only 3-2, so that was a close one too. We knew the guys from the Norway Munin team from previous years and other tournaments, so we were even happier that they managed to get to the finals too.

The pairing process took some time, as both teams were already quite tired, and finally I got to play against Christian and his fancy looking Protectorate army. We were wondering whether I should play against Legion or not, but at the end we decided that I will take worse match up and table and put others in a better situation.

I got to play on the table with 2 massive buildings. I knew what was going to happen, so I decided to go for Siege1 and shoot everything down. Christian picked Cyrenia with scary Avatar and Archons.

Sadly, the recording is still not available, so I decided to include screenshots of the stream made when it was still there to watch.

We played Recon II.

Deployment

I won the roll and immediately decided to go first as I was quite scared of Cyrenia going first and being in the very middle of the table turn 1. I deployed my forces in a usual manner, BE on the sides and everything else in between.

Christian put Cyrenia in the middle with Archons on her sides. Avatar, together with another light jack, was going to take the bottom route, between the buildings. The other heavy jack was placed in the middle, Dervish took the top side. Innitiates were deployed all around there, nasty models.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

There was nothing to wait for, I simply ran everything forward as far as I could. Caine0 put FFE on Siege and Jr put AS on the topmost Strider. Alexia created a Thrall and he ran around the building on the bottom flag.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Christian hesitated for a moment but decided to feat top of turn 1, as I was already quite far up the table and there was no other choice, since he wanted to avoid too many casualties. Anticipating my feat next turn, Christian didn’t bother placing a rockwall. His both Archons stood right behind the corner of the building. Dervish stepped into the top zone; Purifier stepped into the other one. Initiates were protecting all the relevant models. Cyrenia used her feat and hid behind the objective. Heavy jacks stood behind the army, in a second line.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

At the beginning of my turn, I was considering going for the casterkill, but after realizing how Cyrenia’s feat works exactly I decided it wouldn’t be to smart haha Instead, I decided to go for Archons, as I believed they were the biggest threat at that moment. Anastasia appeared on the top side of the board and failed to kill the Champion. Siege had to feat first and for the first time in my life I think I didn’t shoot with Siege on his feat turn, as I was afraid that Christian would hide his Archon behind the building (because Cyrenia’s feat and a random Initiate dying). I gave the reroll from the Treasure Chest to my Charger, loaded it with foc and charged in. To my surprise I managed to roll high enough to hit him and killed it with one strike! The funniest part was Christian commenting it: “Oh, so that’s why you call them Chargers”. Later, I killed handful of Initiates and charged the other Archon with Firefly, sadly leaving it on one or two boxes, I shouldn’t complain though. I managed to kill one of the monks with the trick shot. I contested the top zone with Strider barely touching the zone. Alexia created another Thrall. Al in all I was pretty satisfied with the turn, killing so many models on Cyrenia’s feat was great. It could have been better obviously.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Christian managed to clear the bottom zone with ease, Avatar was more than enough. The other jack cleared the flag killing the contesting Firefly. Sadly, Christian messed up the order of activation and didn’t dispel AS first. Instead, the Champion charged first, then both Dervish and Archon got pushed away, so the Strider survived that turn what was huge. Cyrenia hid behind the building, right on the corner, the book moved in to score the flag. Christian scored 2 points, but it wasn’t the end of the world, 0:2.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

I decided to go for the CK this time. Cyrenia could be pushed away from cover with any of my 3 thunderbolts. Then, I would have Triumph, Storm Strider, Charger and the hitting thunderbolt to finish her off. I only needed to roll 11 on 3d6 and I had 3 attempts. The plan had more or less 70% chances of success. Knocking her down with a crit hit would skyrocket the chances up to 90% or so. I went for it. Ace missed his shot, Caine missed the first one… and the second one too… That was it. I didn’t want to surrender in the final game though, so I moved couple of models, contest what was there to be contested and flipped the clock. I wasn’t even mad, I was laughing a bit, that such great plan failed.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

At this point we knew that other polish players were losing or have already lost their games. Because of that Christian got distracted and what’s more, Hand of Silence (a cavalry model) missed Anastasia that was contesting the flag. That would most probably prolong the game by another turn or two. At this point, Christian decided there was no sense to play this game for another 2 rounds, since they have already won 😀 and he admitted that the CK run should have worked. Christian simply wanted to celebrate the win with his companions, he conceded the game and we shook hands! What a game!

Round 3 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

Huge congratulations to Norway Munin yet again for taking the first place this year! They were super friendly and played on an amazing level and they totally deserved it!

The photo taken right after the last game

Sadly, the game Christian conceded was the only game we won in the final round. This time luck wasn’t on our side.

We were super excited nevertheless. When the final results came we were so over the Moon! We finished on the second place! We were cheering and huging together with the Norwegians (and Kuba 😉 ). What a weekend!

All 5-1 and 6-0 teams

What a spectacular end to an amazing tournament!

2nd place!

It costed me a lot of time and effort to get to that level but it was totally worth it! Play as many games as you can, note thoughts and mistakes you made and learn from them! It will pay off sooner or later!

I will continue to write battle reports as I enjoy it a lot! I have plenty of battle reports waiting to be published, so expect them coming in the following week.

This weekend we are all going to BoostedCon in Zabrze, Poland! Keep your fingers crossed!

Cheers,
Piotr
