Siege1 vs. Harbinger

Hello everyone!

I needed more experience against Harby, so I asked Jakub to take her for Wednesday Warmachine evening. I decided to test my Siege1 list, as I believed it has some potential against her. There were couple of proxies involved, as I was still looking for a nice box to carry my second Strider, and Jakub was waiting for his full unit of 9 Initiates 😉 Also, Errants were representing another unit of Idrians and Gravus represented The Covenant.

Jakub’s Harbinger list:

We played Invasion.

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to be first in order to gain some space in the early stages of the game. I deployed as usual, Striders on the flanks, everything in between, Ace and Caine0 on the left, Junior and Charger on the right.

Jakub deployed Harby in the middle with Initiates around, then jacks on the sides and cavalry solos on the flanks. Idrians were advance deployed facing the circular zones.

We decided to play 55min instead of 1h in order to learn to play a little bit faster.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

I ran forward, placing important models outside of assault range of Idrians. FFE on Brisbane, Arcane Shield on right Storm Strider. I was curious how Jakub would play it out.

Round 1 Turn 2

Jakub, anticipating my plans of frying Idrians, decided to shift toward one side, avoiding a considerable part of my army, what I believe was a smart move. This way he could focus on martyrdoming one unit of Idrians and have the other in reserve (rather than on the side, next to the game board).

Round 2 Turn 1

I needed to start getting the job done. I began with Storm Strider on the left shooting at Initiates, then Triumph and Charger followed forcing Jakub to save those models couple of times. I managed to kill 2 Idrians in the middle. Then, the other battle engine dismounted a Champion on the right and fried couple of Idrians. Firefly and Siege added their part; Jakub simply couldn’t martyrdom every model. All in all, I managed to destroy almost an entire unit of Idrians and deal significant amount of damage to Harby.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Jakub cast Crusader’s Call and healed Harby a bit. Champion and Initiates charged my Firefly, wrecking it. Then, in the middle, his jack wrecked my Charger. Idrians shot at my right Strider and last member of the other unit alongside with dismounted Champion charged my battle engine. Nobody scored any points.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

As soon as Jakub engaged my army, I decided to pop my feat. Siege likes to have enemy models within his ctrl ; ) I managed to clear the first line that charged me, including one of the heavy jacks, a Champion and one unit of Initiates. On the other flank, my engine couldn’t finish the other Champion. I also finished couple of Idrians. Jakub couldn’t allow himself to martyrdom too many models, because my list was constantly posing a CK threat, even with that many shield guards. Still no points.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Jakub charged me again with second wave of his models, this time destroying Strider on the right flank. The Covenant was hidden in the middle of the forest. Devout charged my Strider and got pushed back twice. The right circular zone was finally cleared, and Jakub scored one point, 0:1.

Round 4 Turn 1

I contested the right circular with Firefly and easily cleared left circular zone scoring one point this way. I also managed to kill the Monk, as the amount of electro leaps and trick shots of my own models was just too big. Shooting my own Strider and trick shooting said Monk two times was enough to convince Jakub to remove him from the table. Ace Thunder Bolted the heavy warjack, knocked it down and pushed into the forest. I scored one point, 1:1.

Sadly, there is no photo.

Round 4 Turn 2

Jakub killed contesting Firefly with ease and controlled the circular zone. Also, one Choir member contested my zone. Jakub decided to move Harby and ran her to the other hill, behind a wall of Initiates. 1:2 in Jakub’s favour.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

I knocked down the jack again, easily destroyed the objective and contested the other circular zone with Triumph. I was hoping that my Arcane Shielded hero will survive long enough. I also body blocked the circular zone, so the enemy jack wasn’t able to get to my zone to contest it. I believe he was also disrupted, but I am not sure now. I scored 2 more points, 3:2.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

Harby purified my Arcane Shield, but even then, the remains of his army weren’t able to kill him. My zone remained uncontested. Two Initiates charged my Objective but failed to destroy it. I scored point in my circular zone, 4:2.

Round 5 Turn 2

Round 6 Turn 1

I decided to kill Crusader in the middle, and with help of Siege, Ace and Firefly I was able to. Strider ran into the rectangular zone in case Triumph wouldn’t be able to stay too long in the enemy zone. With 19 seconds on my clock I scored one more point, 5:2.

Round 6 Turn 1

Round 6 Turn 2

Jakub finally managed to kill my Objective but couldn’t kill Triumph, he was still standing in the zone. We both scored a point, 6:3.

Round 6 Turn 2

Round 7 Turn 1

I didn’t have any things to do, neither I had enough time for it. My Strider simply ran into the circular zone, Ace and Caine ran toward it, I scored one more point, 7:3. I had 5 seconds left!

Round 7 Turn 1

Round 7 Turn 2

It was impossible for Jakub to score 4 points at this moment, so we shook hands.

Afterthoughts

What a game! It went down to the last seconds. I believe the most important part was that after initial engagement in second round I was still able to keep most of my valuable models safe. Later, after Jakub’s counter attack, I killed his extended front lines while still keeping most of my models safe. I was also able to take control of the circular zone preventing Jakub from contesting it. That was huge and allowed me to take the lead. Furthermore, Triumph survived surprisingly long and bought me some time to take a couple of points more.

Gaining that much space on the left flank discouraged Harby and forced her to flee from her supposedly safe spot what enabled me to kill contesting models.

It was doubtlessly an interesting game! Thanks Jakub!

Cheers,
Piotr
