Siege1 vs. Harbinger1 – France Panoramix – WTC Round 3

Hello everyone!

After two rounds against Austria we were about to play against another European team. This time we were paired against France Panoramix! Last time I played against a French player, it was back in 2012 in Lyon, so I was happy to get another game in!

After discussing the matchups with my team, I already knew who I was going to play against and as we decided, I got to play against a protectorate player. What’s more, Florian lives in Brest now, not more than 3h drive from Rennes, where I lived for a year on Erasmus! We talked for a bit about Bretagne and Breton food haha and after 10 minutes or so we moved to caster selection. I already had a plan for the game, and I was sure what I was going to play this round. Florian didn’t hesitate either and we were to play Siege1 vs. Harbinger1.

Here you can find other pairings for round 3.

Deployment

Normally, Harbinger would love to see two impassable terrain on the table, but since Florian had a Judicator in his list that was going to be an issue and I wanted to take advantage of that.

I lost the roll and Florian decided to go second. I deployed in a usual way with Striders on the sides and everything else in between.

Florian deployed Judicator in the center and the rest of the army was deployed on the right, apart from one Archon and a Champion.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Caine put FFE on Siege, Junior AS on the right Strider, Siege cast Fox Hole and charged into it. All the other models ran forward, outside of any threat ranges. Alexia created a Thrall.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Judicator ran forward. Harbinger cast Purification and removed my Arcane Shield. Shield Guards were all around her. Idrians ran forward, just outside my charging range. Important solos on the right stayed away of 19” from Strider. On the left, the Champion ran into the trench. Monk stayed behind the house on the left. Archon stayed outside 19” of my Strider.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

I decided to play it conservatively and to stretch my lines. There was no need to put anything but a Thrall into the circular zone, because I would lose it anyway, Judicator is a monster. I started with Strider moving slightly to the right and shooting twice, killing some Idrians and forcing Harby to do several Martyrdom rolls. My 2 Chargers, Firefly and Triumph joined, and I left Harby on 2 hp. My left Strider dealt some damage to the Champion in the trench and a charging Thrall dismounted him. I kept my both engines pretty safe, outside of Judicator’s threat range. Alexia created another Thrall who ran to jam a little bit. Most of my army was pretty safe, Siege cast Fox Hole in a new spot and moved into it, in order to avoid random blasts.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

In his turn, Florian cleared the leftmost zone. Judicator, after removing the Thrall, moved forward and fired rockets, fortunately blasts landed in empty spots. Some Idrians moved forward to jam my jacks and Strider, the others stayed in a trench and shot my engine couple of times. Florian scored 2 points, in the circular zone and on his flag, 0:2.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Sadly, one of the Chargers was outside of my ctrl range. I needed to unjam my right flank first. One of the Chargers managed to kill 2 jamming Idrians with his boosted shots. Later, Strider charged in, fired twice and create enough electro leaps to get through martyrdom rolls and killed handful of Idrians. Additionally, he contested the flag. Firefly and Triumph (who moved backward to avoid spray attacks) cleared the rectangular zone. On the other side, Ace managed to kill the Champion and Strider ran into the rectangular zone. Caine shot twice, but sadly the Monk passed one of his tough rolls and the second Trick Shot was healed by Harby, the zone remained contested. Harby stayed on 3hp though ; ) Squire ran to the flag and I scored two points, 2:2.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Florian started with healing Harby. Morrowan Archon charged my Strider on the left but couldn’t kill the engine. One of the Idrians took a free strike and as a result killed his friends with electro leaps. Judicator charged the other Storm Strider and almost killed it with one punch. The second one was more than enough, believe me. Champion charged already damaged charger and wrecked him easily. Fortunately, the middle zone remained contested by a lonely Risen. Florian simply didn’t have enough attacks. The covenant contested my flag and Protectorate scored only 1 point on the flag, 2:3.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Anastasia came in from the right side and contested the flag. I was considering an assassination attempt for a while, but I figured out it is highly unlikely. The plan was to thunder bolt the book to the place, where Siege could charge it, then feat and catch Harby in his ctrl. Then, Triumph would trample forward and hopefully hit and kill her. I don’t recall if I was missing a millimeter, but I decided not to do that (maybe it was difficult to get the angle or to get rid of all the shield guards around her). I decide to feat nevertheless. Siege moved in feated and killed a couple of initiates. Risen charged the book and killed it to the box ; ) Strider easily killed the Archon. Firefly killed another Initiate. Caine with his Trick Shots forced Harbinger to Martyrdom the Monk twice and Triumph trampled in aaaand… missed Harby. At the end of this turn I had only 46 seconds. I scored one point, 3:3.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

The game was still on. Despite my few seconds on the clock, it might be enough to aim, shoot and hit Harbinger. Harby simply ran away, as far as she could ;p Judicator ran to engage Triumph and block LoS to his caster. The Champion and last Idrian I guess finished Firefly in the rectangular zone. The Monk was still contesting the rectangular zone. We both scored a point on our flags, 4:4.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

Charger ran to contest the right rectangular zone. Triumph with AS and Junior ran into the zone. Strider missed the Monk, but Caine helped with his Trick Shots, I had 10 seconds left and 2 points more. Florian in the meantime scored 1 on his flag, 6:5.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

Two mounted solos managed to kill my Charger.  On the other hand, Judicator somehow failed to kill Triumph and the middle zone remained contested. A choir member was contesting my rectangular zone. Harby ran toward the other rectangular zone, but failed by an inch. We both scored a point on flags, 7:6.

Round 5 Turn 2

Round 6 Turn 1

I managed to kill the Choir member and clocked over to Florian, scoring 2 more points this way, Florian scored one more, 9:7. I had 3 seconds left.

Round 6 Turn 1

Round 6 Turn 2

Florian had more than 14 minutes, so he could begin to clear my models methodically, there was no need to hurry. He was missing two points and he had only 2 turns left, so he had to play it carefully. A choir member contested the rectangular zone. Judicator finally cleared the circular zone (sadly, there was no unit to score it at that point). The colossal managed to kill Squire as well, so I couldn’t score a point on my flag. Harby entered the right rectangular zone and scored a point there, 9:9.

Round 6 Turn 2

Round 7 Turn 1

Before the game we agreed, that between turns we will be pausing the clock and counting points carefully. After that I was taking photos for battle report purposes and we were resuming the clock. Florian tapped the clock a little too early, while I was still holding my phone, and right away he offered to return me that 1 second, so I could make that one last attack. That was really kind, fair play spirit was there! As soon as we flipped the clock I rolled two sets of dice and Storm Strider hit the Choir member and killed him. Siege ran to the flag and I immediately clicked over to Florian. I scored 2 points more. Killing that last Choir member meant that the only unit’s survivor was in the circular zone, so Florian scored the circular zone in my turn, as well as his flag and the rectangular zone, 11:12.

Round 7 Turn 1

Round 7 Turn 2

Florian wanted to get some more Army Points, as you never know when it might come handy : P tie breakers are important, especially when there are 64 teams! Florian managed to kill almost everything, but Siege and last Strider and scored 4 points more, 11:16.

Round 7 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

Whoa, another game that ended in the 7th turn! The matchup is very demanding. I believe that it was the terrain what allowed me to keep up the scenario game for so long, as well as playing very safe and taking advantage of the impassable terrain in the middle.

By the way… have you watched Avengers: The End Game??

I had only one plan, that might have worked if all circumstances would allow it to, 1 out of 14,000,605 ;p the plan was to feat, get Harby within my ctrl and force her to use Martyrdom. Then I would use Ace’s Trick Shot to hit Harby regardless of Shield Guards and that would be dice off 2 (ARM 7 + foc), and on an average rolls I would deal 5 dmg, what could be possible, if only she would be that low. Sadly, that wasn’t the case, as Florian probably foreseen that 1 possibility.

That was my plan in case I would need to play against Harbinger and my team and I, we were laughing about it the whole weekend ;d in case it worked I would not stop laughing until now I think haha

1:14000605

All in all, again, it was a great game with a great opponent! Despite the horrible match up I enjoyed every part of the game. I lost, but again I felt that I fulfilled my duty, as my team won 4:1. I took the worst matchup nobody wanted to play, on the worst table that nobody wanted to even look at.

There we go, we were to play in quarterfinals!

Cheers,
Piotr
