Siege1 vs. Kallus1 – Polish Team Championship – Round 3

Hello everyone!

In the third round on Saturday (back in January when nobody even knew what social distancing was) we got to play against our friends from local meta. We knew them very well and this time we knew what to expect. As a result of a very convoluted pairing process I got to play against Krzysztof and his Legion of Everblight.

Heyo Krzysztof! Yep, there are no vowels missing, that’s polish equivalent of Christopher ; )

I know the army quite well, as Legion is my second faction, so I was hoping that this time I wasn’t going to face any surprises : P

I decided to take Siege1 without any hesitation. Krzysztof took Kallus1.

Krzysztof’s Kallus1 list:

Field Mechaniks (min) [3]
Storm Strider [18]
Storm Strider [18]

We played Invasion.

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go second.

I deployed the usual way – Striders on the sides, most of the models in between and Ace on one of the flanks.

Krzysztof deployed Blightbringer in the middle and the rest of his army symmetrically on its sides.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

All Legion models ran forward, nothing too complicated there.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

The plan was pretty simple. Move as far forward as possible, get jammed and then open fire with all the guns I had. Following the complex plan I ran everything forward, just outside of birds’ engaging range, and passed the turn over to my friend.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Krzystof decided to push hard. Kallus used his feat and everything ran straight ahead. There was no terrain in the middle of the board to hide.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

I had the whole Legion army served on a plate. I had to plan the turn properly, as I didn’t want too many Incubi with DEF 16 on the board. I started by focusing fire on Blightbringer. He was right in the middle of the enemy army, so he was a perfect target for my electrical shots. Siege1 used his feat of course, so killing Chosen wasn’t that hard any more. I had to keep my caster outside of any danger though, so I couldn’t catch all the enemy models within his control range. However, I managed to get rid of the front lines. I saved trick shots and Thamarite Archon for finishing Incubi that were left. At the end, I handled the threat pretty well.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Krzysztof had some Chosen left, that can be pretty scary. He managed to charge and kill my Storm Strider and severly damaged the other. Krzysztof cleared the leftmost zone and scored a point. Fortunately, that was about it, as I had most of my army behind the battle engines. 0:1 in Legion’s favour.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

In my turn I killed all the infantry that survived the previous turn and we shook hands, as there was no chance for Krzysztof to come back from that finishing blow. Thank you Krzychu for the game! I forgot to take a photo : (

Afterthoughts

Games against Kallus1 depend heavily on terrain and scenario. In slow and wide scenarios like this, without a defensive flag, it is hard for Kallus to score easy points by jamming and keeping the enemy army occupied. There was no place to hide or to get defensive buffs. I just had to keep my models outside of running&engaging range, maintain right order of activation and carefully pick targets. Electro-leaps and trick shots are really effective against Kallus’s feat.

After all, the game went as planned and I secured a victory. Both my friends won their games and we qualified for the top8 tournament. The first round of top8 took place on Saturday.

Cheers,
Piotr
