Siege1 vs. Rahera1 – Oslo Team Tournament – Round 2

Hello everyone!

In the second round of the team event we faced a team from UK with Norbert Brunhuber on board! As a result of the pairing process I was to play against Cathal, an Irish player living in UK now. I haven’t had the opportunity to play versus Cathal earlier, but he definitely seemed to be a nice guy, so I was really looking forward to playing.

Cathal brought Rahera and Fiona. I decided to take Siege1 and Cathal took Rahera.

Sláinte Cathal!

Storm Strider [18]
Savio Montero Acosta [0(6)]

We played Invasion.

Deployment

I believe that was me who won the starting roll and I decided to take the side that wouldn’t block my models the way the other side would. That big impassable terrain piece combined with a wall could mess my positioning a lot.

Cathal deployed Blockader on the right, Toros in the middle and on the left. All the nasty pirates and pirate solos were deployed middle/left.

I deployed the usual way with Battle engines on the flanks and all the rest in between.

Deployment
Take a look at cool ConQuest dice we got!

Round 1 Turn 1

Cathal’s models ran forward and tried to stay outside of my shooting range. One of the Toros got stuck behind the infantry. Rahera cast Rough Seas.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Alexia created a Thrall that ran far forward. Leftmost engine moved up and shot the Thrall killing a couple of pirates with electro leaps. Everything else cautiously moved forward as Escort + 10” sprays on Blockader are indeed terrifying.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Cathal played this turn very conservatively trying to avoid too many casualties. Pirates regrouped on the left and made some space for Toros. In the middle, Blockader advanced slightly forward to stay outside of most of my shooting. Black Bella (painted black hehe) toed into the zone.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

I decided to thin out the pirates ranks with Thamarite Archon and Storm Strider. Obviously, toughs on 4+ stood in my way and spoilt the plan, I managed to kill only 3 pirates. Rightmost Storm Strider, Triumph and a charging Thrall managed to deal half damage points to Blockader. Acosta ran forward to stay there and be a difficult piece to remove. Ace moved forward, tried to kill any pirates and Caine used Spirit Door to bring him back.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Did you forget about Scallywag? Well, I did 😛 He jumped over and killed the Thrall. Rahera cast Manifest Destiny. Toro with pathfinder and Escort trampled forward and killed Acosta. Now, Blockader with the path cleared charged Storm Strider and wrecked it with a couple of swings. Oh, my objective also died, Cathal scored 3 points.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Well, the things were going south. My right flank was limited to Triumph and a couple of Risen basically. Cathal engaged first and this turn had to be my feat turn. I had to deal with Blockader for sure. My plan was to clear the left circular zone too. With half of the colossal already gone it wasn’t oo difficult to get rid of the other half. Risen moved into the left circular zone. On the right flank, combined efforts of Storm Strider, Ace (and something more, maybe Caine?) resulted in cleared zone. Mechanics ran to score a point there, 1:3 to Cathal’s advantage.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Two Toros and Scallywag dealt with my poor Triumph in the middle zone. Black Bella killed the contesting Risen on the right. Doc hid behind a wall and contested the left zone, Cathal scored 2 more points, up to 1:5.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

I knew that by playing safe I could pull this off, as this scenario is really slow and attrition-wise I will be getting advantage over the next turns. I had to score 1 point at least and contest the other two zones. The positioning of models in the middle allowed me to utilize Siege’s Ground Pounder to it’s best effect. That combined with all other attacks resulted in all 3 jacks dead. I contested both zones and managed to kill the Doc and cleared the circular zone. I scored one point, 2:5.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

In order to win Cathal had to gain 5 points advantage, but Charger was out of Rahera’s reach. In a hindsight I should have put something more to the zone; what if Rahera would be able to get the Charger? Anyway, Mercenaries were able to clear the rightmost zone easily, Lord Rockbottom contested the other zone and Cathal scored one more point, 2:6.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

That was the break point of the game as I was able to finally use my attrition advantage and convert it to scenario points. I cleared the left circular zone, killed the objective, cleared the rectangular zone and contest the other with a Charger. I scored 3 more points by giving none in return, 5:6.

Round 5 Turn 2

Round 6 Turn 1

Rahera couldn’t get to Charger and he kept contesting the zone. One of the Dirge Seers contested the rectangular zone and I scored one more point, 6:6.

Round 6 Turn 1

Round 6 Turn 2

I killed the contesting model and scored two more points, 8:6.

Round 6 Turn 2

Round 7 Turn 1

One Charger went down, but there were no models left to contest my zones, I scored two more points, 10:6.

Round 7 Turn 1

Round 7 Turn 2

In the last round I just flipped the clock and scored two more points to the final result 12:6.

Round 7 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

The slow scenario and playing very deep allowed me to play the long game. In this case, my shooting list had an advantage over Cathal’s combined arms list. Despite Rough Seas and Escort, my second line was able to pick targets from distance and eliminate the threat before it got too close to the important pieces. Fortunately, I was able to get initial damage on Blockader, otherwise it could look totally different. I let Mercenaries engage and managed to counter-punch. Also, Ground Pounder brings a lot attrition-wise and it is not influenced by spells like Rough Seas. I like how Siege can have a real impact on the game, the longer the game lasts the better it is visible.

At some point Cathal got very close and I was loosing by 4 scenario points, but then I dealt a devastating blow and snowballed from there.

All in all, it was a great game. Thanks Cathal once again, see you soon!

Oh, my team won the round and we went to the third round with a 2:0 score, perfect!

Cheers,
Piotr

  1. Great Report! Really shows Siege’s strengths. Seeing the game turn like that
in one turn is a good reminder that there are lots of ways to turn around a match.

By way of a different question – It looks like you guys are playing on a solid color playmat…Is that homemade or was it purchased? Currently looking to make some mats out of felt, but concerned that it won’t hold up. Wondering if this is a standard felt mat or if you have any experience playing on felt.

Also – I noticed that you don’t have the “Drivers” on your Storm Striders (neither do I). Any particular reason?

    1. Hi!
      That’s right, Siege+FFE can make a difference.

As for the mats, I am afraid I cannot help you, as the tournament took place in Oslo and I’m living in Warsaw 😉 you can ask Sverre Reikvam as he was the TO.

Personally, I can recommend mats from playmats.eu – I own 2 mats and 2D terrains from them and they’re great!

As for the drivers – both engines are “work in progress” for years now hahah and I still didn’t find time to paint them 😛 you know how it works, I painted the second engine quickly to make it for a FPA tournament and then I simply cannot finish it 😉
