Siege1 vs. Vladimir2 – PreWTC tournament – Round 5

Hello everyone!

After an amazing Round 4 where I played exciting Kara vs. Kara matchup we were paired against another team from south. I was paired against Piotr, a khadorian player who is also writing for Moment of Clarity blog.

I had enough of Kara Sloan, and I wanted to play Siege1 and that was a perfect opportunity. Piotr decided to take his Vlad2 in Armored Corpse with plenty of Man-O-Wars and I took Siege, what at first glance seemed to be a great matchup.

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go first, Piotr choose the other side.

I deployed my Striders on the flanks with Triumph and Siege in the middle. I put Ace on the right flank, all the rest somewhere in between.

Piotr deployed Shock troopers on the left and Demo corps on the right. Vlad and his heavy battle group were placed in the middle. Drakhuns were deployed on the flanks. All 4 Tankers were deployed closer to the left side, closer to the flag, naturally.

Deployment

Round 1

As a first player I didn’t have a lot to do but run almost everything forward. I put Fox hole next to the flag, so my solo could capture it and be safe from enemy shooting, if there would be nothing in range obviously. In a hindsight I’m wondering if it is even legal to put Fox hole on a flag… now as I think about it I think not, since flag is also a model after all. Caine0 put FFE on Brisbane, Junior cast Arcane shield on the leftmost Battle engine which was most probably about to eat a couple of Armor-piercing shots in the following turns.

Piotr also moved forward and tried to keep most of his models outside of my threat ranges. On the other side some of those models with SPD 4 wouldn’t be able to get within my threat ranges : P

Round 1

Round 2 Turn 1

I focused fire on the left flank to kill those models who would be able to charge in next turn. I killed 2 or 3 Shocktroopers. On the right side I managed to damage Drakhun a little bit. I spent too much time thinking that turn, but it was somehow difficult to keep my valuable pieces outside of his feat+charges threat ranges. There was no point in putting a solo on a flag, since most probably Piotr will contest it nevertheless. I had to keep Siege safe from Drakhun long charges.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Piotr decided to feat this turn and let both Drakhuns charge in, but somehow, they failed to kill anything, my objective was still standing with 5 boxes left. The other Drakhun charged my Stormstrider on the right and dealt some damage. Behind them his warjacks prepared to counterattack. Piotr had an amazing plan and executed it very well. His infantry was still deep behind his front lines; thus I was unable to reach him with my feat. I was really surprised and amazed by how good his plan was. Essentially, he forced me to use my feat in not necessarily most favourable conditions. Piotr scored a point by controlling his flag, 0:1.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

As said before, I had a very tough nut to crack. I decided to feat now, as I really had to get rid of the Drakhuns and deal some damage to warjacks. Now, when I look at it, I might have saved the feat for the following round, but on the other hand, having those jacks fully functional so close to my lines would be a disaster. I started with Lynus&Edrea giving Brisbane Applied Knowledge. Siege then feated and used his Ground Pounder Attack on the two jacks destroying their movement on the right and cortex on the other, dealing a considerable damage. I managed to get rid of one Drakhun in front of Brisbane and dismounted the other. Sadly, I couldn’t get rid of the solo next to the flag. In order not to fall too far behind on scenario I destroyed the objective, 1:2.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Piotr didn’t hesitate a bit and charged on the right flank destroying my Strider freeing this way the zone of my models. Ace was just outside. In the middle, crippled jack and one of the tankers destroyed my already severely damaged objective. Another Tanker scored a point on the flag and Piotr scored 4 more points, 1:5!

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Well, I was happy that I decided to destroy the objective, otherwise it would be all over by now. The situation wasn’t looking good but there was still hope, I just needed to start doing things : P On the left, Firefly ran to contest the flag and I managed to kill the only Tanker contesting the zone scoring a point there. In the middle, Triumph finished Devastator. Firefly toed into the rectangular zone to contest it. Also, Caine entered it, 2:5. Sadly, I didn’t take a photo here.

Round 4 Turn 2

Piotr was running low on the time. He bulldozed Firefly out of the zone and killed Caine. Shocktroopers failed killing Triumph. Tanker on the left, stood next to the flag, but his shot definitely wasn’t enough to take Strider / Firefly down, 2:6. Piotr had 3:22 on his clock (on the basis of the next photo).

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

My last Strider managed to kill the last Tanker in the zone and I scored another point there. Sadly, I didn’t have a solo close enough to score a flag there, I should have had run with Junior there a turn earlier. Firefly was contesting the right zone again, Squire was holding back to contest the flag just in case. The other Firefly tried to prevent enemy models from entering the left zone. 3:6 and I had only 31 sec on my clock.

Round 5 Turn 1

Round 5 Turn 2

With only 3 minutes left Piotr couldn’t kill Triumph. He managed to finally get rid of my Firefly and scored a point there with Vladimir himself. Tinker ran in to contest the left zone and the flag, 3:7 and 1:05 on his clock.

Round 5 Turn 2

Round 6 Turn 1

Wow, stuff was getting really exciting. Squire ran to contest the right zone, Storm Strider easily killed contesting Tinker and Junior ran to the flag to capture second point, 5:7 and 0:11 on my clock. From this moment on, there was no time to take photos, stopping the clock to take it at this point would be unfair. We were just stopping the time to mark points properly and continued.

Round 6 Turn 1

Round 6 Turn 2

Piotr killed Squire in his rectangular zone and without further contemplation flipped the clock, what resulted in me scoring 2 more points, since both the flag and left rectangular zone were not contested, 7:8.

Round 7 Turn 1

I had only 11 seconds to react. Sadly, I didn’t have any models able to contest the other zone, so I scored two more points and tried to block enemy movements with my light jacks, 9:9 and 4 seconds left!

Round 7 Turn 2

Piotr simply ran to contest my flag and that was it, 10:10!

Round 7 Turn 2

We needed to count army points, and eventually it turned out that Khador destroyed more points than Cygnar did, so victory went to Piotr. Fortunately, my team won 3 out of other 4 games and we won the match!

Afterthoughts

Wow, what a game! I sincerely do not remember when within 27 seconds I managed to score 7 scenario points! If only I would have more time, and didn’t waste that much in the second turn, I would probably figure out to ran couple of models toward the enemy zone. On the other side, if Piotr would have more time he would most probably be able to contest my zone or flag.

After all, I believe it was a favourable matchup, but I used my feat in unfavourable conditions. I was impressed how Piotr layered his forces and this way forced me to feat when he wanted to, rather than when I would have wanted to. I wonder, if keeping my feat one turn longer would be beneficial.

When the dust settled, it turned out that the only undefeated team lost and due to SoS we finished on the second place!! I couldn’t be happier! Amazing weekend and an amazing tournament!

And what’s the funniest, I also won the best Cygnar prize, since the only game that Cygnar won was a mirror match in Round 4 😀

Best Cygnar!
Amazing prizes made by Ice-T.

Cheers,
Piotr
