How are you doing guys on lockdown? I hope you are all well, painting stuff and building new lists ; )
I finally found time to write the battle report of the final game of Polish Team Championship that took place some time ago. It is surprisingly hard to find time now, when I am sitting at home the whole day.
In the final round we faced a team composed of Grymkin led by Bartek from Poznan, Circle led by Christopher who was living at that point in Krakow, and Infernals led by Tomasz.
After carefully analyzing lists of our opponents we decided what should be our approach. As a result I was to play against Tomasz the third time within a week ; P Third time’s a charm?
I picked Siege1, as after two games against Tomasz (each caster once), I felt that he stood better chances than Constance. Tomasz obviously picked Zaateroth1. Here we go!

We played Recon II.
I won the roll and decided to go second (so my objective wouldn’t be destroyed that quick), Tomasz took the side. Zaateroth was deployed in the middle of the zone with Horrors surrounding her. Hermit and Regna stood right next to her too. Grievers took position on the right flank and cultists on the other. Gate was deployed on the right hand side.
Because of the impassable terrain in the right rectangular zone I decided to deploy both engines on the left. Siege and Triumph were in the middle. A Charger, Ace and Thamarite Archon were closer to the right side.
Round 1 Turn 1
After getting my ass whooped by Tomasz twice that week, I was well aware of what the list can do, or at least I thought so… . Tomasz moved his models forward and summoned a Desolator, a pretty standard round 1 for Infernals.
Round 1 Turn 2
I placed a Fox Hole near my flag and my caster moved forward. Caine cast FFE on Siege. Both engines spread across left flank. I was hoping that they won’t get blinded the next round. My army advanced cautiously forward. Sadly, I exposed my caster a little bit too much. I mean he couldn’t die there yet, but …
Round 2 Turn 1
Tomasz cast Rebuke on Siege, ouch. I should have protected him better, with Risen or something. Infernals, apart from taking the middle board, didn’t move too far. Tomasz played it safe and took advantage of his superior charge ranges. He was outside range of most of my guns and took better position in the zone. A Sneaky Snake was summoned that turn.
Round 2 Turn 2
I found myself in a situation, where whatever I put in the zone it would die. I decided to contest the left hand zone with a Thrall, and withdrew both BE to safety. In the middle, I hold ground and killed both Shrieker and Lamenter. On the right, I put two Chargers behind the house and Acosta on the flag. I scored one point, 1:0. I was hoping that the house would cover me a little bit and that the rest of the army will be able to deal with whatever engaged Chargers.
Round 3 Turn 1
Tomasz noticed that I gave him too much space and withdrew a little bit too far, what could potentially result in me having issues with contesting the zones the next turn. He saw the opportunity and decided to go all in to take advantage of it. The Sneaky Snake turned one of my Charges to a pile of junk. Combined efforts of Desolator and some more shooting resulted in destroying my objective. Also, a Tormentor was summoned (represented by a Wold Guardian, some models availability is still an issue in Europe). Grievers spread across the rectangular zone on the right, what with combination of the house blocking the line of sight, effectively prevented me from clearing the zone. There were 4 Horrors in front of my army, and some more behind in the second line. Zaateroth used her feat of course. Tomasz scored 3 points, 1:3.
Round 3 Turn 2
Scoring any point, apart from the flag, was outside of my reach. I had to focus on killing as many Horrors as possible and contesting the zones in a meaningful way. I begun with Siege using his feat and firing a single rocket : ( then I moved BEs and opened fire. Triumph charged in and finished the snake. I managed to kill the guardian Horror and deal some damage to the rest. Killing only 2 Horrors was surely not enough. What’s worse, I couldn’t clear the flag, and a Thrall was too far to contest the flag without taking a free strike from a Horror (one that tried got countercharged by another Tormentor). That was a sad turn for me, I haven’t achieved any goals. The game was basically over. Tomasz scored one point on his flag, 4:1.
Round 4 Turn 1
As it was easy to predict, Tomasz scored remaining two points by clearing my zone by killing both Triumph and an already hurt Charger, 6:1.
I knew that this match up was going to be hard, letting Zaateroth cast Rebuke on Siege made it even harder. I should’t have given so much space the turn I moved back. The better way would be probably moving one of the Striders back and leaving one of them in front, what would layer my defence and allow me to stay closer to the center of the battle. Also, placement of the house on the right side was quite unfortunate. Normally I would be pleased by it, as it should protect my flag. Against Infernals though, who can charge through such obstacles and easily see huge bases, it’s another thing. Third time was not a charm ; P Next thing to test against Infernals – Stryker2.
Andrzej sadly lost against Circle, Tomasz Tutaj won his match up and we placed second! Another year of Polish Team Championship where together with Tomasz Tutaj we finished second. Maybe the next time the proverb will be right and the third time will be a charm? Who knows.
Congrats to Tomasz, Christopher and Bartek (who btw took 1st place last year too) for winning Polish Team Championship 2020!
Oh, and a honorable mention goes to my friends from my hometown – Bydgoszcz. Once, it was one of the biggest WMH communities in Poland with more than 20 active players (back in MK1). After all the ups and downs Warmachine is getting back to the town! Keep it up guys!
