Stryker1 vs. Syvestro1

Hello everyone!

I wanted to test Stryker1 and see what the impact of Oblivion changes on his performance in Storm Division would be. I took a fairly known list: Hurricane, double lances and some bonuses. I also wanted to see how Stormblades would perform without the advance move, to be honest, I didn’t expect too much.

In our local tournament I faced Maciej – a Crucible Guard player, who I already played against couple of weeks ago. I decided to play Stryker1, as I am still looking for an anti-gun line list. Maciej opted on taking Syvestro, what also ment he will be able to purify all my precious upkeeps… ouch.

Maciej’s Syvestro list:

Crucible Guard
[Theme] Magnum Opus

[Syvestro 1] Aurum Adeptus Syvestro [+28]
– Retaliator [9]
– Suppressor [13]
– Vindicator [15]
– Aurum Ominus Alyce Marc [0(5)]
Crucible Guard Mechanik [2]
Trancer [0(3)]
Trancer [0(3)]
Crucible Guard Assault Troopers (max) [13]
Crucible Guard Infantry (max) [15]
– Crucible Guard Infantry Officer & Standard [4]
Crucible Guard Storm Troopers (max) [16]
Dragon’s Breath Rocket [0(5)]
Railless Interceptor [16]

My Stryker1 list:

[Theme] Storm Division

[Stryker 1] Commander Coleman Stryker [+30]
– Hurricane [35]
– Squire [0(5)]
Captain Arlan Strangewayes [4]
Hermit of Henge Hold [5]
Journeyman Warcaster [4]
– Firefly [8]
Sir Dreyfus the Storm Knight [0(5)]
Storm Lances (max) [20]
Storm Lances (max) [20]
Stormblade Infantry [9]
– Stormblade Infantry Officer & Standard [0(5)]

I begun making Hurricane’s base 2 years ago, but I never got to finish it. Hopefully, if the list will turn to be great, I will be motivated enough to finish it within no time. Bokur proxied Ser Dreyfus and Hermit was proxied with a Stormsmith Storm Gunner.

We played Anarchy.

I won the roll and decided to go first. I wanted to gain as much space as possible and this way prevent Maciej from contesting my flag. Stryker’s feat, arcane shield (sadly purified every turn) and unyielding is amazing.

I deployed Hurricane in the middle, with Storm Lances on the sides. I put Stormblades on the left side, where they will have more space to charge in (going through that choke point turned out not to be the best idea ; p

Maciej deployed his battle engine on the left to go for Stormblades. Crucible infantry and Retaliator were deployed next to him. Syvestro was placed in the middle next to a heavy jack. Two heavy infantry units and another heavy warjack were deployed on the right.

Round 1 Turn 1

I put Blur on Stormblades, Snipe on Hurricane and Arcane Shield on both units of Storm Lances. Everything ran forward, but I tried to stay out of any threat ranges. After putting Snipe on my colossal I understood how scary he can be!

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Maciej had a great plan to limit my movement and caused me a headache. His Trancers simply ran to engage Lances and slow down my movement. All the other models moved forward, Syvestro cast Purification. There they go, my beloved upkeeps. Later on, Maciej cast Admonition on Syvestro and Transference on Assault Troopers, what made them DEF 15 in melee! Railless Interceptor hit the middle Lance with its Alchemical Cannon, what left a huge 4” AoE in front of Stormblades. Entering there would result in suffering 1 dmg to the model. I liked the move with Trancers blocking my models, they’re extremely difficult to remove!

Round 1 Turn 2

 Round 2 Turn 1

The first thing I had to deal with were 2 Trancers blocking my charges. I decided to try boosted Arcane Bolts first, I needed only 11 to hit with a single reroll from Squire. I hit the first Arcane Bolt and killed the Trancer, but I forgot to use my feat first, what resulted in Storm Lances suffering 1 or 2 damage due to Psychokinetic Blast. This time I didn’t forget about that and I feated and targeted the other Trancer, but I missed this time. Hurricane moved in and hit Trancer with his first ranged attack, killing him on spot. I put remaining shots into Vindicator (knocking it down) and the cannon, but failed to kill one of the grunts with the blast, so the cannon survived. Then, Lances charged on both flanks spreading havoc within enemy front lines. I managed to get to Retaliator on the left, killed lots of Crucible Infantry with electro leaps and dealt some damage to Suppressor. On the right, Lances killed many Assault and Storm Troopers. That wasn’t a bad turn, but I couldn’t get the Railless Interceptor and that was the model I was most worried about. Sir Dreyfus jumped to the flag. Stormblades mini-feated and ran behind the Storm Lances trying to avoid the Scatter AoE.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Maciej decided to put as many continuous effects on Stormblades and Storm Lances as possible to kill them in my own turn. ARM 23 on Stormblades and 22 (24 in melee) made them almost immune to any damage in this turn. Syvestro feated and to my surprise even a charging Crucible Infantry grunt managed to deal some damage to my Storm Lance (POW 9 against ARM 24 lol). I lost 3 Lances and significant part of Stormblades on the left flank. Additionally, there were more to die in my turn due to continuous effects, Railless Interceptor made sure of that. On the right flank I lost only 2 Lances. I scored a point on my flag, 1:0.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

Obviously none of my models got rid of continuous effect and most of them died. I knew that I wouldn’t lose Hurricane in a single turn now, when Crucible Infantry was gone, but I didn’t see any chances on scenario game so I decided on a Caster Kill. Syvestro didn’t have his super stealth on, so that shouldn’t be too difficult. Lances killed a Assault Trooper blocking the line of sight. Stryker channeled his Earthquake through Hurricane’s arc node on Alyce and caught Syvestro within 5” AoE range. Hurricane walked forward and with two shots managed to finish the game.

Round 3 Turn 1

Well, I cannot really tell how this list works, since my main advantage – Stryker’s amazing upkeep spells – were removed easily by Syvestro. In order to tell anything more I need more testing. It was definitely a great experience to put the first model I ever bought over 12 years ago again on the table! Stryker has a great toolbox, he is great in buffing his models, but now those buffs can be easily removed. He is great in many things, but as someone said, the game reward the extremes the most. Stryker at first glance might seem boring and predictable, but with the upcoming morrowan releases he might gain a lot! I will definitely get back to him in the near future.

I liked the list and its Caster Kill potential, but as I said, I need to test it more.

  1. Also if you want to make this test better – loose the starting roll. 😉 Going first helps double cavalry to win the game – despite the slowness of your infantry.
