Stryker2 vs. Syvestro – Counterattack 101

Hello everyone!

I was so eager to test Stryker2 with PKs that I couldn’t wait to have a game on Wednesday, after Polish Team Championship. I played several games with Constance, but I felt that Stryker2 can perform better than her in Flame in the Darkness, especially against lists that Constance was struggling against. In the first game that day I faced Pawel and his Crucible Guard army led by Syvestro.

Pawel’s Syvestro list:

Crucible Guard
[Theme] Magnum Opus

[Syvestro 1] Aurum Adeptus Syvestro [+28]
– Retaliator [9]
– Retaliator [9]
– Suppressor [13]
Crucible Guard Mechanik [2]
Hermit of Henge Hold [5]
Prospero [0(5)]
– Toro [13]
Trancer [0(3)]

Trancer [0(3)]
Dragon’s Breath Rocket [5]
Steelhead Halberdiers (max) [11]
– Doctor Alejandro Mosby [4]
Railless Interceptor [16]

My Stryker2 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Flame in the Darkness

[Stryker 2] Lord Commander Stryker [+28]
– Gallant [17]
– Talon [7]
– Toro [13]
Alexia, Mistress of the Witchfire [7]
Grand Master Gabriel Throne [7]
Morrowan Archon [8]
Savio Montero Acosta [0(6)]
Thamarite Archon [8]
Precursor Knights (max) [14]
– Morrowan Battle Priest (3) [0(6)]
– Precursor Knight Officer & Standard [4]
Precursor Knights (max) [14]
– Morrowan Battle Priest (3) [0(6)]
– Precursor Knight Officer & Standard [4]

Please take note that back then I didn’t have access to any other units/models from FitD theme like Thamarite Advocate, Resolutes or Legion of Lost Souls. When all that COVID19 madness will end I will test Stryker2 with LoLS for sure! But to be fair, I felt pretty ok with that list. Oh, and Alexia2 was proxied with a black skull base (I was in the middle of changing it).

We played Invasion.

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go first. I deployed Stryker centrally, surrounded by Gabriel, Acosta, Alexia2 and a Morrowan Archon. On the left flank I deployed a unit of Precursor Knights and Talon. On the other side I deployed the other unit of PKs, Torro, Thamarite Archon and Gallant.

Pawel deployed his both battle engines on the left flank supported by a light artillery. Syvestro and his battle group took position in the middle. A unit of Halberdiers and Mosby took position on the right flank.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

Everything ran forward and after making sure Stryker would be safe up front, I even cast Velocity to threaten farther. Oh, and my caster also cast Deceleration to protect my army from any deviating blasts.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Pawel decided to advance cautiously to stay outside of my long threat ranges and prepare his army for the next round. Both of his battle engines opened fire from their big guns and some lucky deviations caused death of couple of my Knights and Battle Priests on the left flank. All the Trancers ran forward to cause chaos in my front lines. Oh, how I hate those guys, getting rid of them without proper guns is really problematic. All the jacks shifted a bit toward the right edge of the board. Halberdiers spread on the right side. Mosby used his mini feat, Syvestro stayed far back and cast Admonition on himself and Explosivo on Suppressor.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

Thamarite Archon killed one Steelhead and tried to hit a Trancer. Precursors moved forward, thanks to Vengeance, and killed two of those nasty solos (and exploded together with them, sadly). Alexia created Thralls who charged one of the Trains. Gabriel gave tough to the rightmost PK unit. The rest of the Knights spread across both flanks to avoid getting killed by blasts etc. Talon hid behind the forest, but within the zone, a perfect spot, right? ; ) Morrowan Archon stayed behind the building in the middle. Gallant toed into the zone and Stryker withdrew a bit and cast Deceleration. Torro took position behind the infantry wall. I was ready to receive the alpha strike. I exposed Precursor Knights in the front lines but kept the juicy pieces in the second line.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Pawel saw my front lines served on a silver plate and decided to go for it.  Steelheads cleared some PKs in the right circular zone. Retaliators together with Suppressor killed a handful of models, setting on fire those who survived. Syvestro gave +2 SPD to Toro and used his feat I believe. Prospero cast Instability Equation and the heavy jack charged forward. Thanks to shear luck and a bad Pawel’s roll the jack died in a beautiful explosion. We both lost our Toros, but somehow, I felt better about that than Pawel did. In the middle, Trancer engaged Acosta. On the left flank, both Trains toed into the zone and opened fire. I lost only one PK and a Battle Priest passed a tough roll, I was quite lucky there. I was hoping that those Battle Engines would get a little bit closer to me. Nobody scored a point. Despite suffering high casualties, I felt pretty ok, as I had enough resources to come back.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

That was going to be my feat turn. Both PK units got closer to the enemy thanks to Vengeance. A PK killed the Trancer in the forest. Talon ran toward the gap between the forest and the building. Stryker used his feat and cast Positive charge on Talon. Thamarite Archon killed 3 Steelheads with one explosive shot and killed one or two more in the middle of the board. Acosta dealt with the Trancer and Gallant charged the Suppressor. On the right flank PKs charged forward what they could. Alexia created 3 Thralls again who charged the Retaliator and Hermit. Morrowan Archon charged one of the Trains. Precursor Knights on the left charged the same Train, those who were too far, ran forward. I believe the UA used the minifeat too. Then the Strykers2 3” movement and attack took place. Talon moved first to spread the Positive Charge aura farther and I managed to deal much more damage there. In the middle I managed to get rid of Hermit and failed to kill any of those jacks, but they were both severely damaged.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Pawel didn’t expect that to happen. Losing one battle engine, most of the infantry and losing so many hit boxes on his jacks hurt for sure. The Train on the left, together with the Dragon’s Breath Rocket killed a couple of PK, but the Archon survived. In the middle, I lost some Thralls and few boxes on Gallant. On the right, I lost one PK and that was about it, Pawel couldn’t do much more honestly.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

At this point, I could use my attrition advantage and start scoring points. I managed to clear the left circular zone with Talon, Morrowan Archon and a Battle Priest. In the middle, I finished the jacks and killed the objective. On the right, I simply kept contesting the zone. I scored 3 points, 3:0.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

Pawel managed to kill the objective and scored a point. The left and the middle zone remained uncontested, so I scored 2 more points, 5:1.

Round 4 Turn 2

Round 5 Turn 1

In my turn I scored 2 more points and we shook hands, 7:1.

Round 5 Turn 1

Afterthoughts

I was really curious how Styker2 list would perform against a shooting list. The main difference between Constance and Stryker2 playstyle is the way those list can engage. Stryker’s feat adds a lot of flexibility to the list, while Positive Charge add a lot of hitting power every turn (not only once, like Constance’s feat). What’s even more important, the feat gives a lot of additional attacks. Moreover, Stryker himself is a huge threat that can reliably assassinate a warcaster whenever he has chance to. There are plenty of sweet, although quite obvious interactions like Gabriel giving +2 STR to the first attack (that includes the feat attack) or giving another possibility to Morrowan Archon to blind a battle engine ; ) Keep in mind that Thralls can move 3″ and hit again, what in combination with Positive Charge and WM is great.

I find the Stryker2 list refreshing after playing 10 games with Constance. For now I am not planning to get back to her anytime soon. What’s your experience with Styrker2? What do you like better with him, LoLS or PKs? Or maybe both?

Cheers,
Piotr
