Stryker2 vs. Zaal2 – Rolling Thunder against Rolling Stones

Hello everyone!

This time I wanted to test Stryker2 in Flames against Zaal2 and Immortals, my longlasting nemesis. I asked my WTC teammate, Paweł, to bring a Zaal2 list to the Wednesday Warmachine evening. He was already pretty sure that Stryker2 in FitD can beat Zaal2 pretty easily, but I wasn’t able to imagine that, as I have been losing against Zaal2 consecutively for the last year and a half or even more.

Paweł’s Zaal2 list:

Skorne
[Theme] The Exalted

[Zaal 2] Zaal, the Ancestral Advocate [+29]
– Desert Hydra [35]
Abidan the Keeper [0(5)]
Ancestral Guardian [0(5)]
Extoller Novitiate [2]
Extoller Novitiate [2]
Hakaar the Destroyer [0(6)]
Immortal Vessel [3]
Void Archon [8]
Immortals (min) [8]
– Extoller Advocate [3]
Immortals (min) [8]
– Extoller Advocate [3]
Supreme Guardian [16]
Supreme Guardian [16]

My Stryker2 list:

Cygnar
[Theme] Flame in the Darkness

[Stryker 2] Lord Commander Stryker [+28]
– Gallant [17]
– Talon [7]
– Toro [13]
Alexia, Mistress of the Witchfire [7]
Grand Master Gabriel Throne [7]
Morrowan Archon [8]

Precursor Knights (max) [14]
– Morrowan Battle Priest (3) [0(6)]
– Precursor Knight Officer & Standard [4]

We played Bunkers.

Deployment

I lost the roll off but Paweł decided to pick a side and I got the first turn. Sadly, the side I had to take was going to force me to squeeze in between a forest on the left, a shallow water in the center and a wall on the right. I deployed one PK unit on the left, together with Gallant. The other PK unit was deployed on the far right. A little bit closer to the middle of the zone I deployed my caster, Toro, Talon, Gabriel, Alexia2 and Savio Acosta. Morrowan Archon was placed on the right, Thamarite Archon in the middle.

Paweł deployed Hydra on the left side, one Statue in the middle and the other on the right. Both Immortal units were deployed on the sides. Void Archon took position on the far left. Zaal2 was placed right next to Hydra. Hakaar and the other Guardian were placed on the right side of the middle Statue.

Sadly, I didn’t take any photos of that stage.

Round 1 Turn 1

Everything ran forward, I wanted to rush through those passes between the terrain features as fast as possible, so my army won’t get stuck behind them or get pushed behind them by Paweł’s army. Stryker led his army personally, giving an example by rushing in the first row.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Paweł ran as far as possible and stayed outside of my charge ranges. The Void Archon took a favorable position behind the house to fly over it next round and kill my dudes, sneaky sneaky. Desert Hydra was chilling next to the same house, the two Supreme Gentlemen were hanging out together in the middle of the board. Immortals were standing behind the house and Desert Hydra on the left and behind the forest on the right flank.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

I had a general idea what had to be done that turn. I couldn’t reach enemy models with charges and that wasn’t going to be my feat turn for sure. I was assuming that next round was going to be Paweł’s feat turn, so most probably I wasn’t going to clear the table in one round, thus I had to keep some forces in reserve. I needed to force enemy models to move forward but I didn’t want to give too much away. I ran PKs here and there forward and kept most of the models in reserve. Thamarite Archon took a contesting position, 4″ away from the leftmost flag. The right flag was contested by the other Archon. The middle flag wasn’t heavily contested, as I was aware that it would be extremely costly to keep it contested.

Round 2 Turn 2

Skorne stepped forward. Desert Hydra cleared some PKs in the center. Statues got in line with Hydra and killed all the models within their reach. 2 Immortals ran in front of my rightmost PK unit. Abidan captured the middle flag. Void Archon failed to kill a PK, as I passed a tough roll and it couldn’t teleport closer to my Thamarite Archon and stayed this way out in the open, ouuufff, I got lucky there 😉 Zaal2 obviously feated this turn. Paweł scored 2 points, I scored one, 1:2.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

I had everything served on a silver plate, I only had to allocate resources properly and kill what was there to be killed. I knew I couldn’t get everything so I had to prioritize. The thing I was most afraid was Hydra. Fortunately, she didn’t get the bonus ARM from Zaal’s feat so it wasn’t going to be that hard. I had to kill the Void Archon too, as that would open the left flank and allow me to score points easily there. I wanted to get one of the statues too, as that would most probably seal the victory right there. I started by getting the Void Archon and capturing the left flag by Thamarite Archon. Gallant got pathfinder from the objective and Positive Charge from Stryker2. My caster feated and moved to a secure position. Alexia created Thralls who together with Gallant and PKs removed the gargantuan. Now, it was time to take care of the statues. The Immortals blocking my PKs on the right were annoying but I got rid of them fortunately. Sadly, I didn’t have enough power to get rid of any of the battle engines. I definitely allocated too many models to put Hydra down. However, overkill is the best kill 😉 In a hindsight, I should have given PC to Toro as well, as that would help me killing one of the statues. Overall I was satisfied with how it went, I still had lots of models in reserve. I scored 2 points, Paweł scored one, 3:3.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Paweł had a tough nut to crack. Again, clearing the middle flag wasn’t an issue. Clearing the leftmost flag was the issue for sure. Statues killed whatever was in their range (including my both heavy warjacks), apart from maybe one or two Precursor Knights. Losing the middle of the board was painful but I had still plenty of PKs to work with. Oh, and Talon was there to help too. I find it quite important to have a fast, light warjack in Stryker’s list to apply Positive Charge where it is needed the most. Paweł scored 2 more points, I scored one in my rectangular zone, 4:5.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

Thanks to Vengeance triggered on the leftmost unit I could use the offensive potential of that unit. PKs with Gabriel’s buff (one of the units getting it) and Positive Charge, together with Thrall Warriors and Gabriel himself charging in handled both battle engines. Savio died to a retaliatory strike, as always, obviously. I contested the rectangular zone and scored mine. 2 flags remained contested, I scored only the left one, 6:5.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

Paweł tried a CK but getting Stryker behind the wall was highly unlikely and I survived.

Afterthoughts

Finally I found an answer against Immortals! I was so happy that eventually I managed to have a game into the Exalted theme force. This is not the list Paweł was usually playing with but he convinced me that against Hydra, a single Supreme Guardian and a bunch more Immortals it wouldn’t be so different. However, Paweł already had a list in mind to counter the Stryker list and we were going to test it in (then) near future.

Stryker2 in FitD feels extremely potent. I am so happy that I found a list I was satisfied with. There are many more builds to test but this particular one felt great! Oh, and buying Toros when I was in Oslo was the right call heehehe.

Cheers,
Piotr
