Lower point games allow to squeeze in more games in one evening, so we scheduled another one. This time it was going to be Caine1 vs Gaspy1, so here we go. I was pretty satisfied with how my 35p list looked on paper, I couldn’t keep Caine alive though. I was hoping this time it will change. We shall see.

My Caine1 list:

– Stormblade Infantry Storm Gunner (1)
We played Ignition II.
Sadly, Robert won the starting roll and decided to go first. He deployed his warjacks on the right and infantry on the left. Gaspy was placed somewhere in between.
I deployed my list closer to the right side, where I could score more points. My idea was to contest the leftmost flag and fight for the right side. Keeping the center contested was important too. I deployed Stormclad facing directly toward the rectangular zone. Stormblades were deployed together with Reliant on the right side. Caine was placed in the middle of that group. Acosta was closer to the left though.
Round 1 Turn 1
Everything ran forward and that nasty Stalker rushed all ahead. From that point, past the middle point of the board, he was threatening really far and could get whatever I would move even an inch forward. Heavy jack on the right toed the rectangular zone.
Round 1 Turn 2
I had to figure out how to protect my key models from Stalker while not staying too far back, otherwise I would simply lose on scenario. I decided to keep my most important models outside 13″ from Stalker. Reliant moved up, shot at Stalker and caught him with a deviating AoE 3″, dealing some damage. Alexia crafted a Thrall but he missed his charge attack. I didn’t expect too much from him. Stormclad ran forward to the zone. Acosta ran to the left, but he couldn’t get into the trench, otherwise Stalker would most probably get him. I wasn’t too happy with how that turn played out. I realized I could have cast Snipe and Deadeye on SB and try to assault Stalker, but I wouldn’t get too many of SBs within 5″ of him and I would stay in a weird place in the middle of the open terrain with my whole expensive unit exposed. I also couldn’t guarantee that any of the attacks would hit on boosted 12 ;p
Round 2 Turn 1
Aaaand… I totally forgot that Reaper had a Harpoon that could drag models. Sleep well, my dear Stormclad. A drag and a couple of charges later my heavy warjack was no more. I got 3 or 4 hp dealt by feedback too. That’s exactly what Caine1 likes, right? 😛 Axiara casually hit and killed Acosta with a single hand cannon attack. Robert did a clever move with Stalker. Instead of jumping into my army he simply moved him behind a forest. I couldn’t get him there and he was continuously threatening my caster and other important models. Nice, patient move!
Round 2 Turn 2
I simply lost too much to continue attrition game. Moreover, Caine already suffered some damage and Gaspy could go for CK any moment. I upkept Blur and wanted to slam Slayer away, but then I realized that wouldn’t change too much, as I couldn’t possibly kill Misery Cage. Since I had enough FOC to slam a heavy I could slam a heavy into enemy warcaster, right? I decided to go for a CK myself and try to kill Gaspy, not Caine obviously. I boosted Thunder Strike and hit the Reaper. I needed to roll at least 2 to KD the enemy caster… and obviously I rolled 1! With every decision I made and every move I did the situation was getting worse and worse. At this point I could do very little. Caine feated and tried to kill a couple more Satyxis. Stormblades assaulted Satyxis, arc node and Slayer and killed few models and crippled arc node. Storm Gunner missed the Satyxis who was contesting the leftmost flag. Caine was exposed so I decided to body-block him with Risen, who couldn’t be targeted by magic. That was all I could do at this point.
Round 3 Turn 1
Robert knew that hitting Caine with def 20 might be problematic, so he planned something else. First, a Satyxis solos killed one of the Risen. Then, Slayer ran forward, I crippled one of his arms with my free strike… a pitty it wasn’t movement, right? Gaspy moved a bit and started casting Breath of Corruption against his own warjack. First attack hit and dealt some damage to Caine and crippled warjack’s movement. Then, he feated and dealt Caine additional 4 dmg lol! It was unboosted POW 5 vs ARM 13. One more Breath of Corruption and that was the last breath Caine has taken.

This guy just doesn’t want to stay alive! Every single 35p game I played so far has ended with him losing his life one way or another. I really have to focus on keeping him safe, then the list will do the work.
Playing Warmachine is a tough learning process. All those games served one purpose – to learn how to keep Caine alive. I failed in each of them haha but if I would be able to keep him alive during the upcoming tournament games that would mean that I didn’t lose those games in vain. We will see soon enough (I already know it 😉 ).
There were several mistakes I did. Forgetting that Reaper had drag was the most painful one. Also, I shouldn’t be that afraid of losing a solo to Stalker and simply let him pick which one he would like to get rid of. By protecting all of my important models I made him jump behind the forest, what turned out to be even more dangerous and, as a consequence, forced me to take my chances by attempting to kill Gaspy.
That Caster Kill attempt didn’t go well, but if only I would knock Gaspy down the chances increased significantly. He had 2 FOC, but I could put 4 SB shots, one charge attack, a Reliant shot and Thunder strike’s collateral damage into him. The chances calculated in Oddsmachine were surprisingly high, but it all depended on one 2+ roll.
I should have played my army more offensively, while playing Caine more defensively at the same time. Playing such a fragile warcaster in Brawlmachine is tougher than it seemed at first.
