Game #37 Kallus1 vs. Kolgrima1 – The Challange

Hello everyone!

After a short break I got to play couple of Legion games. This one was the third after the break, but I decided to describe it first, since we had a little challange posted on our facebook page 😉

I played with Wiktor and he decided to take Kolgrima against my Kallus1 list (well, I netlisted it 😛 ). That was my first game with this warlock, and it was Wiktor’s first game against him too.

Wiktor’s Kolgrima1 list:

Trollbloods Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Storm of the North

[Kolgrima 1] Kolgrima Stonetruth, Winter Witch [+28]
– Dire Troll Mauler [15]
– Pyre Troll [8]
– Troll Basher [7]
– Trollkin Runebearer [0(5)]
Fell Caller Hero [0(5)]
Valka Curseborn, Chieftain of the North [0(6)]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6]
– Northkin Elder [3]
Northkin Bear Handlers & Battle Bears [10]
Northkin Fire Eaters [7]
Northkin Fire Eaters [7]
Trollkin Champions (max) [16]
Trollkin Long Riders (min) [12]
Trollkin Long Riders (min) [12]

My Kallus1 list:

Legion Army – 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Primal Terrors

[Kallus 1] Kallus, Wrath of Everblight [+30]
– Blightbringer [32]
– Harrier [3]
– Ammok the Truthbearer [0(4)]
Gudrun the Wanderer [5]
Spell Martyr [1]
Blighted Rotwings (max) [12]
Blighted Rotwings (max) [12]
Chosen of Everblight (max) [20]
Chosen of Everblight (max) [20]
Hellmouth [0(6)]
Hellmouth [0(6)]

I had couple of proxies: second unit of Chosen was proxied by Raptors, Ammok by Trencher Buster and Harrier by Cygnar dog (I forgot to take those two last models).

We played Invasion.

Deployment

I won one of the most important rolls of the game and decided to go first.

I deployed Blight Bringer behind the forest with an intention to capture the middle and the right zone. I placed one unit of Chosen and one unit of Rotwings on both flanks and Hellmouths in the zones, in the way they could reach any contesting model.

Wiktor deployed his cavalry on both sides and Champions with Kolgrima and support in the middle. Both units of Fire Eaters were advance deployed.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

I ran everything forward and put Ignite on left Rotwings and then constantly kept forgetting about that spell. I also tried to avoid Fire Eaters sprays.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Wiktor chose to play his first turn deffensively and I believe that is exactly what Kallus1 wants to see. Sadly, this scenario is very slow, otherwise it would be over. On the other hand, I would just kill anything that would enter the zones and probably feat anyway, so maybe it was a good choice?

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

I was hesitating for a while wheather I should go all in or back a little and wait till the next round, but I decided to rush forward and see how it would work. I find it difficult, at the begining, to balance the amount of models that I jam with versus the models I just keep back to have a juicy counter punch 😉 it will come with more games, I’m pretty sure. I put birds up front and Chosen in a threatening position behind them. I tried to keep as many chosen in the aura and Kallus command range as possible. ARM 21 on them is a thing!

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Wiktor obviously didn’t lose his spirit and started with couple of nice sprays and Kolgrima feating. That helped him a lot to unjam his army. Then he did a fairly good job with working around my feat and at the end of his turn only 2 Incubi stayed on the battle field. No points scored, though. Mauler tried to kill 3 Chosen and he failed to kill any.

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

That was the turn where I had to get the job done. Fortunately, I had huge time advantage so I could work around it. I knew that scoring a point or two should be the priority, since this game surely can go to turn 7. The left zone was an obvious choice where I had to kill only 2 bisons. I remembered that Valka has countercharge so I begun with Incub engaging her. After the whole turn, I cleared the left zone, but Valka survived just too much as for my taste 😛 Hellmouths dragged Mauler and BB with Dark Guidance effortlessly killed Mauler with couple of crit poison hits. Sadly, I couldn’t free the right zone and I didn’t have enough attacks there to even think of removing the objective (the house was in a perfect spot). 1:0 to my favour.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Wiktor didn’t have issues killing the birds, killing Chosen is what he struggled with. He couldn’t clear any of the zones and I still have models to counter attack. Wiktor couldn’t get through my front lines to get meaningful charges. No points.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

I finally managed to kill that nasty Valka and finish the Pyre Troll with last bird attacks. That was another turn where I forgot to calculate the additional damage from Ignite, but we sorted this out. I scored another point in the left circular zone and dealt some damage to the objective. With ARM 20 it wasn’t that easy, though.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

I should have move Kallus1 to a safer spot. Wiktor managed to find the angle but I still had 1 fury point and it was difficult to get him killed with what Trollbloods had to offer at this point. Fire Eaters couldn’t hit him and Kilgrima advanced forward and teleported but failed in spraying me to death. We shook hands. During the whole process Wiktor clocked himself, but we wanted to resolve the CK run.

Round 4 Turn 2

Afterthoughts

Kallus1 is a scary scenario list. It is especially problematic when he gets to rush up the table first and the opponent decides to play deffensively on turn 1. The scenario wasn’t necessarily quick, so the game would go either to turn 7 or one of us would run out of time. Kallus1 took the victory home, yeee!

I think that’s how usually Kallus1 games go. You score one or two points and maintain the advantage till the last turns. To be honest, I do not find this list to be particularly fun or enjoyable to play with or against. Although very powerful, it doesn’t give me the satisfaction. I will have couple of more games with it, as it is a significant improvement to my Legion pairing and can play against many lists that normally Legion struggle to play against.

Now I need to find time to work on my Legion models as my current Cygnar pairing is almost fully painted 😉

Kallus1 ftw

Cheers,
Piotr
