I finally had a chance to play a 75p game. I played against my dear friend, Pawel, and his beautifully painted Skorne. I couldn’t wait to see how Nemo4 would work in Maddox list and oooh my, this game was epic! It came down to the wire, when we finished in round 7 I had only 49 seconds left!
Pawel’s Rasheth list:
[Theme] Disciples of Agony
[Rasheth 1] Dominar Rasheth [+28]
– Agonizer [0(6)]
– Basilisk Krea [0(7)]
– Mammoth
– Aptimus Marketh
Bog Trog Mist Speaker
Gremlin Swarm
Paingiver Task Master [0(3)]
Paingiver Task Master [0(3)]
Void Archon
Void Archon
Croak Raiders (max)
Farrow Brigands (max)
– Farrow Brigand Warlord
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min)
Pawel proxied Croak Raiders with Slingers, as he forgot the models I think.
My Maddox list:
[Theme] Storm Division
[Maddox 1] Major Beth Maddox [+30]
– Reliant
– Stormclad
Lieutenant Gwen Keller [0(5)]
Savio Montero Acosta [0(6)]
Sir Dreyfus the Storm Knight [0(5)]
Storm Lances (max)
Stormblade Infantry
– Morrowan Battle Priest (1)
Stormblade Infantry
– Morrowan Battle Priest (1)
Artificer Prime Nemo
– Mangler
I proxied Mangler with Malvin, as I was still waiting for my model to arrive. I already have it and I need to kit bash Mangler from a Mule plastic kit and some bits I have lying around 😉
We played Split Decision.
I won the roll and decided to go first. In a hindsight I think I should have taken the other side and go second. Maddox provides pathfinder, but only in charge, so it all depended on where the main fight would take place.
I deployed Nemo4 centrally, so he could stay in the middle of my force, return grunts to any stormblade unit if needed and just be a solid gun platform. At least that was the plan, that was my first game with him in the list 😉 I deployed Storm Lances on the left, where they could charge in and contest the flag. I deployed Stormblades on both sides. Reliant stayed on the left, Stormclad on the right. Mangle, proxied with Malvin&Mayhem, was deployed on the right.
Pawel deployed Mammoth on the right, Rasheth and support in the middle and Brigands on the left. Void Archons stayed on both flanks. Croaks were deployed on the right, in front of the circular zone with intention to score it sooner or later. The combination of Oil, Fire damage on their darts and Rashet’s ARM debuffs (up to -4) is scary!
Round 1 Turn 1
Most of my models ran forward and that was the moment when I realized I might have messed up by going first and allowing Pawel to pick a side. Thanks to the forest in the middle some of my models were safe from Mammoth, but those narrow corridors were limiting my positioning. I also didn’t want to walk into Croaks’ shooting range, so I had to carefully position my warjacks on the right flank. They stayed quite far back, what was uncomfortable. Maddox cast Snipe on Nemo, Assail on Stormclad and Onslaught on herself. Nemo cast Lightning Shroud on Mangler. I realized I forgot to summon SB Captain right away and Pawel allowed me to do it.
Round 1 Turn 2
Pawel was a second player so he could take a conservative approach and wait for me to engage or expose first. Brigands spread across the left flank. Void Archon flew over next to the building there. In the center, Rasheth approached the wall. Mammoth moved close enough to threaten far with his cannons and stayed outside of my melee range. Croaks started flanking maneuvers on the right. I felt pushed against the wall.
Round 2 Turn 1
Maddox upkept all of her spells and cast Dauntless Resolve on the right hand Stormblades. I positioned Storm Lances too far to cast the spell on them. Storm Lances ran forward and to the left. There was simply not enough space in the middle of the board for all 5 of them. Both units of Stormblades ran forward, but I kept Battle Priests within 3″ of Nemo’s future location. Arcane Mechanics Super Tuned Nemo, who moved up and shot Krea twice dealing some damage. I missed the first attack and boosted both attack and damage roll for the following shot. I shouldn’t have done that. It was going to be difficult to keep Nemo safe throughout the game, as Mammoth can shoot really far and Void Archons are able to reach really far thanks to their teleport. The only thing I could really do, was to save focus points and keep shield guards close by. At that point I thought 2FOC would be enough. Would it? He was outside of Mammoth charge range at least 😉 I kept Mangler close to Maddox, just in case she would need to reactivate him 😛 Stormclad toed the zone, I couldn’t keep him safe from the frogs forever. Gwen stayed behind. I lost a lot of time on positioning and planning the correct order of activation.
Round 2 Turn 2
Pawel decided it was going to be his feat turn, if not now then when, right? Task Master ran forward. Rasheth used feat and cast Blood Mark (-2ARM) on Nemo. He also killed a Storm Lance I believe. Void Archon moved up, sprayed Stormblades and teleported to Nemo. He hit him twice, leaving him on 7 boxes or so. It was not looking good for sure! The other Archon moved up, sprayed my Stormblade and teleported to Stormclad crippling his Cortex. Pawel should have activated Croaks first, as now they had hard time hitting my jack, some of them however, were shooting at Nemo. Now, it was Mammoth’s turn. I had 2 Shield Guards and the gargantuan has D3+1 shots, so I was hoping for 2 😀 sadly, Pawel rolled 3. He easily hit all of his attacks, Battle Priests shield guarded first two, the third finished the job. The mistake of boosting the shot previous turn cost me Nemo, his unit and an inert Mangler, noooot good. Brigands moved up and dug in. Mist Speaker captured the flag, we both scored a point, 1:1.
Round 3 Turn 1
Oufff… that hurt. I had a tough nut to crack now. With so many points gone I was afraid I was not going to come back. Fortunately, Maddox was close enough to walk and activate Mangler and incorporate him to her battle group. Since taking him with Nemo4 makes him friendly faction, I could walk up to B2B contact and spend a FOC point to activate him. That was the first thing I did. The second was to use her feat. Then I had to take care of both Void Archons. Acosta charged and killed the first one. The other was killed by Gwen and Reliant. SB Captain gave Desperate Pace to the right Stormblade unit. Dreyfus killed the two Frogs on the rightmost flag, but there was no point in trying to score a point there, I had to take care of Mammoth first. Then, Stormblades assaulted the gargantuan and dealt a significant amount of damage, it was nothing close to killing him however. Then I realized I could have charge the Agonizer with Stormclad. I had my Cortex crippled, but he had Assail on him (free charge and +2 mov). Oh well… I did it after all, but that could be 12 additional damage (wouldn’t be enough this turn though). I though he was blocked or something. Storm Lances charged in, I dealt some damage to Krea, failed to kill Mist Speaker and engaged Brigands on the left. I scored a point on my flag, 2:1.
I was still behind, but I felt I was standing up. I didn’t kill Mammoth, but I managed to damage him severely and I had enough models to fight the next round. I was curious what the next turn was going to bring.
Round 3 Turn 2
Pawel easily killed the Stormblades that charged the Mammoth. Croaks oiled and burned to ash my Stormclad. It was rather an easy task with Rasheth additionally decreasing my jack’s armor. Rasheth also managed to kill my Stormblade Captain, what prevented me from scoring my flag this turn. Dreyfus survived and contested the flag bravely. In the center, Krea killed one of the Lances, Brigands managed to kill the two other cavalry models. I had only one guy left. Thankfully, Stormblades survived and they were ready to take part in the fight. Pawel scored his flag, 2:2.
Round 4 Turn 1
I still had two remaining heavy warjacks and plenty of models that were still able to deal damage. Mangler had his Movement crippled, what I realized in the middle of my turn haha My priority was to get rid of Mammoth. Finally, Acosta was close enough to charge him! Acosta, Stormblades and Dreyfus were not enough to finish the gargantuan. Reliant shot him and still failed to get the job done! My last hope was Maddox. She cast Snipe on herself, reposition to a safer place and shot him. In order to deal enough boxes to kill the beast I had to roll 13 on 3d6… and I did! What a luck! It wouldn’t be necessary if only I remembered to activate Stormclad first the previous round. Mangler walked up, closer to the center of the board. Gwen walked up to the flag. Storm Lance killed the jamming Brigands and stayed behind the cover. I contested the flag and scored one point, 3:2.
Round 4 Turn 2
Pawel, without the gargantuan, was running low on models that could deal damage. Croaks were still a threat, but not in melee. First, Pawel got rid of my contesting Stormblade. Then, Rasheth cast Blood Mark on Reliant to lower his ARM and tried to kill Gwen on the flag, but he missed her. Brigands moved closer and shot him, a nearby Battle Priest shield guarded the shot that could potentially be fatal to my warjack and passed his tough check. Croaks Oiled Mangler but, failed to cripple either Cortex or his Right hand. Gremlin Swarm, afraid of my only magical attacks – Battle Priest’s and Maddox’s ran away to safety, but close enough to be relevant next round. We both scored a point on our flags, 4:3.
Round 5 Turn 1
I didn’t need to think twice what to do on the right flank. Mangler walked in and killed all the Croaks with his Thresher attack. Dreyfus jumped in and captured the flag. Battle Priest ran to the zone and scored the circular zone (all remaining unit members were gone). Reliant charged a model and stayed within contesting range of the enemy flag, but failed to kill anything. Gwen moved forward and throw a grenade at Brigands and killed one or two. Storm Lance charged in and failed to kill anything, what a bad luck. Maddox captured my flag and I scored 3 points this turn! 7:3 in my favor! I was getting ahead on scenario. Now I wonder if I was able to kill the objective this turn? I don’t think I would be able to get the angle with my cavalry though.
Round 5 Turn 2
Now it was Pawel’s turn to come back, as he was falling behind on scenario and attrition. Gremlin Swarm ran to contest the zone and the flag. A single Pain Giver charged and sadly killed my Priest, no more magic attacks that would be able to kill the Swarm on the right flank. Brigands killed the Storm Lance and Rasheth managed to kill Gwen. He also scored his flag. Mist Speaker contested my flag. Pawel scored a point, 7:4.
Round 6 Turn 1
We were getting toward the final rounds of the game and I was running low on clock. I knew I was ahead on scenario, and I didn’t really had means to kill the Swarm on the flank, so I had to focus on the left side instead and free up my flag. Dreyfus moved in but I failed to do any damage to Brigands. I wonder if he was able to contest the flag by running there? I think he was not. It’s tough to say by just looking on the photo. Mangler stayed in the middle of the zone. The Mist Speaker was too fat to engage him and be B2B with the flag in the same time, so she simply shot him. I scored one point, 8:5.
Round 6 Turn 2
Skorn still had two turns of scoring, so anything could happen there! Gremlin Swarm Sabotaged Mangler and dealt some damage. Rasheth and Brigands managed to kill Dreyfus. One of the Brigands contested my flag, Pawel scored one point, 8:6.
Round 7 Turn 1
The only thing I could do with a minute or so on my clock, was to kill the Brigand with Maddox, what she did by shooting him. Mangler walked away from Brigands, but stayed within the zone. I scored one point, 9:7.
Round 7 Turn 2
In order to win, Pawel had to kill Mangler. Fortunately (or not, depends who would you ask) he was too far from Rasheth to be targeted by spells, and the fat boy can only use his own friendly faction models as arc nodes. Gremlin Swarm Sabotaged the jack once again and Brigands shot him, he survived on 8hp. We both scored a point and the final score was 10:8 in Cygnar’s favor! What a roller coaster!

Thank you, Pawel, for that incredible game! It was one of the toughest one I played recently and I really enjoyed it, whatever result would be there!
I was really satisfied that I managed to come back after losing Nemo. It was a huge blow, but I managed to focus and recover. I took Mangler for its Thresher rule and this game it came in handy. Exposing Nemo this way wan’t the best idea. Shooting Krea was totally not worth it. Nemo4 is tough, but not against that many ARM debuffs and strong attacks. Now I will know better to keep him safe. Huge base is difficult to keep safe from enemy attacks, so the only thing I could do wast to camp focus and keep shield guards nearby. I need more games with Nemo4 to find out how to use him properly. Keeping him in the middle of my force wasn’t the best idea either.
Not charging with Stormclad first in round three was another thing that could have cost me the game. Somehow I thought he is blocked and with his movement crippled he can do nothing but walk up and hit a frog. Only when I charged with Stormblades I noticed a clear path to Agonizer. You can imagine how painful to was to realize.
As for the list, I need more games with it. I blocked myself badly in the first rounds and lost important pieces too early to properly judge how useful they are in this combination. Snipe on Nemo4 is great, especially when I want to keep him far in the back, right? Mangler under Nemo4 in Maddox list is sooo scary! P+S 23 ignoring Shields? Threat range 15″ if I cast Assail and Locomotion? Yes, please!
I was thinking if including SB is necessary here, but I don’t think it is. I already have 2 Shield Guards and I don’t really feel I need Buster for example. On the other hand, summoning a Gun Mage Riflemen or GMCA this game would be useful to kill the Gremlin Swarm (of course in case I would already have SB in the list). I need to think about that Playing a game or two would be useful too 😉
I think taking only one unit of Storm Lances is the right call here, as two units of Stormblades cost as much as 5 Lances and threat only few inches less. I need bodies and what’s more – Nemo can bring them back! I’ll definitely stick with 2 SB and 1 SL unit.
And last, but not least, thank you Endre for supporting my blog on Buy me a coffee! That means a lot to me! Take care!
