Stryker1 vs Krueger2 – New Year’s Resolutions

Hello everyone!

As I mentioned in my previous FB post, I am slowly getting back to hobby life πŸ˜‰ I intend to describe all post-dynamic update games, but I would like to start the year with the most recent game.

I finally played a game, the one this year! I played with Bartek. I was surprised to see Circle on the other side of the board, as he played mostly PoM the previous year. So, new year, new army? πŸ˜‰

I decided to take something easy to play, with a limited amount of models to find after moving to a new place haha so here it is, my Stryker1 list with 4 Archons. I was initially planing on taking it to a Master tournament that took place in November (YT link to a short video recap) but I decided to take Sturgis instead… what for? I don’t know πŸ˜›

Cygnar
[Theme] Flame in the Darkness

[Stryker 1] Commander Coleman Stryker [+30]
– Blockader [32]
Grand Master Gabriel Throne [7]

Field Mechaniks (min) [2]
Precursor Knights (min) [8]
– Morrowan Battle Priest (1) [2]
– Precursor Knight Officer & Standard [0(4)]

Obviously, I forgot to take my warcaster… so I had to proxy it with a Thamarite Advocate, sorry.

We played Spread the Net.

Deployment

I won the roll and decided to go first. Bartek chose the other side and we started deploying our models.

I deployed Blockader on the right, with an intention to score points in my rectangular zone. Gallant and Jakes were deployed on the other side aiming to score/contest the opposite rectangular zone. Precursors were placed in the middle with Stryker and support models. I deployed Archons in pairs. Mechanics were placed on the right, to be able to repair Blockader, just in case πŸ˜‰

Bartek deployed his battle group closer to the forest on the right, putting only one Woldwyrd and one Woldwarden on the left. One Gallows Groove on each flank and in the center. Shifting stones and Sentry Stones were deployed on each flank. The Well was deployed on the right side.

Deployment

Round 1 Turn 1

I decided to cast my upkeeps and simply stay outside of Woldwyrd’s threat range and wait till the second round to see if I want to risk upkeeping them or not. Stryker cast Snipe on one of the Thamarite Archons, Blur on one Morrowan Archon, Arcane shield on the other. Jakes cast Side kick on Gallant. Gabriel gave pathfinder to PKs. Everything ran forward outside of shooting threat range.

Round 1 Turn 1

Round 1 Turn 2

Gallows Groove on the left teleported forward. Krueger cast Gallows on my Thamarite Archon that dealt 8 dmg and dragged it 3″ toward Mannekins. They tried to finish it with sprays, but first one missed and I dodged away. Shifting Stones teleported into the circular zone. Everything else ran forward.

Round 1 Turn 2

Round 2 Turn 1

My plan for the round was to get within the zones, but stay away from charge ranges with Blockader and other important pieces. I wanted to keep Stryker’s feat for the next round. Thamarite Archon on the right killed rightmost Gallows Grove. Blockader moved forward, stayed outside of 11″ from Woldwardens and sprayed Sentry Stone and another Gallows grove to death with his only 2 sprays now πŸ™ After I finished it’s activation Bartek realized that his Blacklad has Hunter’s Mark (+2 movement while charging the target). He even offered not to use it during the game, as we agreed I was outside of his charge ranges, but I didn’t want to interfere with the rules in such way, so I simply used Stryker’s feat instead. I had to change my plans, though, and Bartek allowed me to upkeep Arcane Shield on Morrowan Archon. I decided to use upgraded Shield Wall, so my Precursors forfeited their melee attacks and moved additional 3″ in Shield Wall. Stryker used his feat and recast Snipe on Jakes, as I wanted to drop it from the Archon on the right and save it from dying to an angry Woldwyrd. Thamarite Archon killed Sentry Stone on the left. Morrowan Archon ran to the enemy rectangular zone. Gabriel gave Tough to PKs. Gallant ran forward.

Round 2 Turn 1

Round 2 Turn 2

Bartek decided to use Krueger’s feat this round. His warlock stayed where he was, feated and additionally cast Wind Storm. He also TK’ed my Morrowan Archon around, but his ARM 26 in his back arc was still a little bit too much for enemy models. Bartek didn’t want to trigger Vengeance on PKs, so the Well shot Gabriel instead. Morrowan Battle Priest was there to protect him. He was the model with the weakest ARM of all and obviously the blast damaged him and the standard bearer. Luckily they both passed their tough checks – vengeance triggered! What’s more funny/annoying (depends who do you supporta haha), Ragman survived the blast on 2hp! Oh, the Well also summoned a White Mane who charged Blockader to block his movement, contest the zone and disturb my order of activation next turn. On the right side Woldwyrd managed to kill my objective. On the left flank Shifting Stones teleported forward to block the access to the zone. A mannekin contested my flag. Woldwarden entered the zone. Bartek scored 3 points but stayed really far back, that was my chance!

Round 2 Turn 2

Round 3 Turn 1

I had to take advantage of Circle’s poor positioning. First, PKs moved forward with Vengeance. Two managed to severly damage Sentry Stone on the left and kill the White Mane on the right. Then, Thamarite Archon shot all 3 arrows at Woldwyrd. Blockader walked up and finished it and killed Stonekeeper that scored the rightmost flag. Gabriel gave Pathfinder to PKs and they charged forward to body block enemy models. I dealt some damage to Woldwarden and the Well. Sadly, I left one Shifting Stone alive, the one in the zone. Morrowan Archon ran forward to annoy enemy models there. Thamarite Archon on the left managed to finish Sentry Stone. Gallant and Morrowan Archon killed the objective and 2 out of 3 Shifting stones. I was pretty satisfied with how this turn went, I scored 3 points and had a good position for the following rounds.

Round 3 Turn 1

Round 3 Turn 2

Charging in with PKs paid out as Circle had issues with disengaging and getting access to the center of the board. Morrowan Archon’s -2 to hit aura made things even worse. Bartek managed to kill a couple of PKs in the center, but that was about it. Woldwarden charged Blockader and dealt some damage. On the left side though, Woldwyrd managed to cripple Gallant’s Cortex. I upkept Side Kick for a round too long πŸ˜› Woldwarden charged Morrowan Archon and Gallant but failed to do anything. Shifting stone contested my flag. The Well killed the rightmost Thamarite Archon. Bartek scored a point on his flag (we forgot about a nasty gobber contesting it I suppose). I scored a point in my rectangular zone, 4:4.

Round 3 Turn 2

Round 4 Turn 1

I gained a significant advantage and I didn’t want to let the game slip through my fingers, however clumsy they were after such a long hiatus. I just had to keep scoring and removing models that got to close to contest. I started with Ragman using Death Field. Blockader chopped down the Woldwarden with 2 or 3 attacks. Thamarite Archon killed the contesting stone. I tried to blind the Woldwalker on the left, without success. I managed to clear the circular zone and Stryker scored a point there. I killed Chuck on the enemy flag, but I didn’t have any solos close enough to score it. I scored 3 points in total, 7:4.

Round 4 Turn 1

Round 4 Turn 2

Bartek tried to fight back, but at this point it was already too late. He managed to finally kill the Morrowan Archon in the center, a sweet consolation prize at last. I scored two more points in his turn and we shook hands.

Afterthoughts

I created a buymeacoffee profile, where you can support me and contribute to development of this blog by buying me a “coffee”. Funds gathered this way will be used on blog maintenance and making more 3D terrain πŸ˜‰
If anyone would like to do so, you can follow the link below. You can also leave a private message there. Any kind of feedback is highly appreciated!

First, I would like to thank Benoit, Samu, KrzysztofDaniel RG and Endre for supporting me on buymeacoffee. It really means a lot to me! Thank you!

It was so cool to finally roll dice again! Thank you, Bartek, for a nice game!

I think that both scenario and match up favoured Stryker’s list over Krueger’s.

It was a coincidence I took a colossal and a heavy jack under Jakes1 πŸ˜‰ that allowed me to plan my movement with Krueger’s feat in mind to prevent him from gaining a significant advantage from pushing my models away.

Feating in the Round 2 turned to be a good call after all. It limited casualties on my side and allowed me to play more aggressively with most of the army. Also, blocking enemy models in the back was the right call. Circle list didn’t have enough attacks/activations to clear the charge lane.

Any time I am playing against Woldwyrds with a list that relies on upkeeps I am always worried (especially after games like THIS in mind). Despite my best efforts I still forgot to drop the Side Kick and got my ass kicked again! Third’s time a charm, right?

As for the list, I was really happy with how it worked. Having 4 Archons in a list is a lot, but now, that Thamarites have ROF 3, it might not be such a bad idea. I’d like to have a big PK unit there, but that would require rebuilding the list a bit. Anyway, I am happy with how this list worked in that particular game. What made me even happier was playing with an almost fully painted army (apart from 1 Archon and not having a warcaster model lol).

And what the resolution is? To play more, paint more and report more than before! At least until June, when my family will get bigger πŸ˜‰

Cheers,
Piotr

  1. Always happy to have another report from you, but special props on the painted army! It’s looking very good, especially the Bloackader. Very nice bases as well.
