Yesterday I played against Piotr, a player who played back in MK2, so quite long time ago, and is getting back to Warmachine 😉 I’m so happy that there are people (re)joining our community! Actually, there were 3 players that (re)joined Warmachine community after a long hiatus, so a big round of applause everyone! Piotr already has 3 big armies and played at home during lockdown. This time he brought Cryx.

I like the idea of a spam of junior warcasters under Skarre1. Aiakos, Deneghra and Asphyxious introduce a combination of fantastic spells and abilities, what combined with Skarre’s own spells and feat give a potent mixture.

The idea behind the list (or at least how I wanted to use it) is to utilize great potential of Thamarite Archons with Snipe, by cycling the spell between them. Also, Arcane Shield (that I somehow managed to forget to cast in first 2 rounds lol) combined with Stryker’s feat can protect whatever he wants to keep alive. I was planning to use Blockader as an anchor on one of the flanks and concentrate infantry on the other. In this particular match up I knew I had to get rid of pistol wraiths as soon as possible.
Sadly, we started the game 1h too early and we didn’t get to test the new Steamroller CID. We played Recon II.
I won the starting roll, but decided to go second and pick a side.
Piotr deployed Skarre in the middle, Aiakos and Denny0 with their battle groups on the left and Asphyxious on the right. DeathJack was deployed closer to the right side. Mechanithralls were kept in ambush (I wanted to say reserve, ups). Oh, Inflictor was proxied with a Seether.
I deployed Stryker in the middle, Blockader on the left and PKs on the right. Thamarite Archons were deployed on each flank, Alexia2 and Morrowan Archon were deployed in the middle, to be able to follow PKs in the first turn.
Round 1 Turn 1
Everything ran forward and most fragile models tried to stay outside of Thamarite Archons’ threat range. Jacks stayed outside of Blockader sprays’ threat range too. Aiakos cast Escort on Kharybdis, Skarre was to get additional 5 foc next turn.
Round 1 Turn 2
In my turn, Stryker cast Snipe in the rightmost Archon, who killed two orbs on the right side and changed them to two 3″ AoE clouds with fire damage. Blockader advanced forward and stayed outside of DJ threat range. I tried not to keep any living models close-by, as Asphyxious extends threat range against living models by 2″ within his 9″ command. Second Thamarite Archon stayed behind the colossal within 6″ from Stryker to get Snipe the next turn. PKs got Tough from Gabriel. Both Alexia2 and Morrowan Archon had all the PKs within their command to both deny and be able to collect souls. I was about to move Malvin to the right side, when I realized that Piotr had a whole unit with Brute Thralls in ambush! Ufff, Malvin moved behind PKs in the middle instead. I forgot that I could take Flight and simply fly over them, oh well.
Round 2 Turn 1
Piotr decided to play this turn conservatively. DJ withdrew outside of potential threat ranges. Ol’Grim killed a battle priest and a PK triggering Vengeance. One of Asphyxious’s Orbs killed another one. Alexia got 3 souls this way. Deathripper contested the rectangular zone, one of the Scrap Thralls moved B2B to the flag (after I took the photo). Gaspy cast a cloud effect to protect himself from 2 charges from PKs. Skarre was to get 5 foc next turn, again.
Round 2 Turn 2
I decided not to feat this turn, as Skarre is able to counter Stryker’s feat easily, and use it after Piotr decides to use his. The plan was to play conservatively this turn, not to give too many models away and feat next turn, after Cryx engagement. That would ensure that my feat would not be used in vain and buy me more time post-Skarre-feat. I also wanted to score 2 points by clearing the lefthand zone and capturing my own flag. My colossal got the Fortune reroll, as I anticipated my dice forgot how to behave. Blockader stepped forward and rolled 5 shots in total, nice! I hit the Deathripper and Scrap Thrall with the first spray attack (killing the later easily), rolled poorly on arc node’s damage, so I used the once-per-game reroll from the objective… and got 2 1 1 instead. Sweet. I had 4 more shots and only one focus point, so I tried to miraculously hit three without boosting, it never happened, so I boosted to hit the last one and dealt some scrap damage. Rightmost Thamarite Archon got rid of Ol’ Grima. Stryker cycled Snipe to the other Archon who managed to finish Deathripper, good boy! PKs moved forward, I kept most of them behind the front line to counter attack the next round. Alexia created 3 Thralls that charged Asphyxious, hit twice and dealt some damage. Mechanics followed Blockader to repair him if needed. Hermit captured the flag, I scored 2 points, 2:0.
Round 3 Turn 1
This turn didn’t go as planned on either side. First, Denny activated before Skarre had the opportunity to use her feat. In order to both capture the flag and have Blockader in range of Curse of Shadows she had to enter the Eruption of Ash cloud. I rolled high enough that she had to spend focus point to survive. That meant she couldn’t boost to hit Blockader with mighty DEF 9. I guess you know what happened, she missed rolling 3 1 to hit 😀 Skarre now feated, picking 8 or 9 models. Gaspy Flickered forward and charged Morrowan Archon. One of the Orbs flew over to Blockader to use Dark Shroud. Gaspy hit the charging roll, but Hermit denied it. After all, Morrowan Archon stayed on 4 hp. DJ charged forward, killed PK and cast a spell on Hermit, Alexia however collected that poor PK’s soul and denied the spell. We figured out later, that DJ could cast the spell right before making the charge attack, what would deny me that soul in the first place, lesson learned by Piotr. Kharybdis walked up to engage Blockader and with a couple of incredible (2x 5,6) and one terrible (1,1) damage rolls managed to kill my colossal to the box… Where was Arcane Shield when Westfold fell?! Piotr scored 2 points and suddenly I found myself in a much worse situation, 2:2.
Round 3 Turn 2
Loosing my colossal this way was painful. Fortunately, I still had means to continue the struggle. Killing Denny0 and Gaspy was rather trivial. The issue was to disable Kharybdis and DeathJack somehow. Hermit used his -2 ARM aura. PKs charged Gaspy, DJ and Kharybdis with minifeat and while I was moving my models I realized I forgot to give them +2 dmg from Gabriel… I managed to kill Gaspy, deal some damage to both heavy warjacks. Malvin pushed the button and charged the jack on the left. Initial rolls went quite well. Enemy warjack had only 4 boxes left and I still had 2 focus points. I hit both attacks but failed to wound either of them… Kharybdis had C, M and L functional. If only I remembered to use Gabriel’s battle plan he would be long dead. Instead, Gabriel gave +2 to dmg to Morrowan Archon and shot Gaspy’s Orb in the lefthand zone. Morrowan Archon dealt some damage and managed to blind DJ with his shield. Stryker disrupted him with his pistol and this time I remembered to cast Arcane Shield (on PKs) and used his feat. I didn’t score any point, 2:2.
Round 4 Turn 1
With little time left on his clock and most of my models nearly invincible 😉 Piotr didn’t have too many options left. Finally he put Ambushed unit to play. Kharybdis threw Malvin outside of the zone and that was about it, as killing PKs with my feat and AS was simply too tough, we shook hands. What a game! So many twists!
Hah what a game where almost nothing was going as planned! Blockader failing to kill Deathripper, Denny failing to roll 5 to hit Blockader, then Kharybdis killing the colossal to the box and then surviving with most of his systems functional. That left flank was something else haha
Order of activation was an issue for both of us. Denny could save that focus point if Skarre feated first, Kharybdis would die if I remembered to use Gabriel’s battle plan first. Planning the turn and realizing what has to go first is crucial in Warmachine. After long hiatus it is an issue, but I’m pretty sure it will come back with more games played.
Thamarite Archons are monsters with Snipe (rolling high amount of shots is also a skill) against fragile solos and support models. Piotr told me after the game that he was thinking about deploying Mechanithralls with Brute Thralls normally, and that could actually be a better solution, as Brute Thralls have shield guard. That could protect Pistol Wraiths from my Archons long enough to kill much more Precursor Knights.
On my side, why didn’t I cast Arcane Shield right away in the 1st turn? I have no idea 😛 I remembered about snipe at least. I am satisfied with how Malvin works, too, as that was my first time using him. I cannot wait to test the list more!
I need to paint this list fast as we are going to stream games in one week and a half to sort of wake up Polish warmachine community.
